It was initially St. John the Baptist Hospital. Later it was a hostel and an inn. Since 1898 it has been in the same family as a hotel and later a restaurant. Ate here with our tour from Viking. Our tour guide, Thiago, was a wealth of information. We had the Spaetzle since we don't eat pork. It was quite good. So cheesy! For dessert, the creme caramel was delicious. Try the apfelschorle. A very popular drink in Germany, it is half apple juice and half sparkling water. So refreshing on a hot, hot summer day in Rothenberg. The food is good and the portions are "normal". The wine and alcohol menu is extensive. There is no parking-- you will need to walk to the location. There is 1 table inside that can hold a party of 8ish and maybe 2 that can hold 6. This is not the right venue for a party of more than 8 unless everyone is comfortable sitting apart.

Casually known as the Potato Restaurant, the potato is king here. The potato and garlic soup is a must have for the first course. Then save room. The main servings are LARGE. I highly recommend the Schweinshaxe, a German dish, which is a roasted ham hock or "pork knuckle". The ham hock is the end of the pig's leg, just above the ankle and below the meaty ham part. It was blue-collar and poor peoples' food so it is a cheap cut that is cooked for a long time. It is one of the 2 best I have ever had. They speak English and other languages in this casual place. If you go during tourist season it can be packed. If you are not used to German food, then you may want to steer away from the sauerkraut casseroles as the sauerkraut is delicious, but quite strong. This is not the type of place for a fast-food lover. Order a full meal, with beers, and you are here for at least one to two hours of non-stop eating and drinking and you will be so stuffed you will have to walk for an hour or if you are staying close by, a nap is definitely in order.
