You can count on Gastof Butz to provide very hearty Franconian meals. We enjoy coming here though it's a little out of the way from the city center. That may not be a bad thing since you can avoid most of tourist traffic by venturing out on the side streets. This time I tried Hausgebackener Gemüsestrudel mit Salaten, 9,50€. It's spinach and meat-filled ravioli sliced and cooked with eggs and mixed salad plate (photos). Serving portion is very generous and filled me up very easily. Mixed salad was a very typical Franconian vegetable mix with cabbage slaw, marinated shredded carrots and sliced cucumber under the mound of well-dressed lettuce. Perhaps what was missing was some potato salad, but it was large side salad nonetheless. Salatteller mit gebratener Hähnchenbrust, 10,20€, a salad plate with grilled chicken breast. Salad plate includes aforementioned ingredients plus potato salad (photo). Atmosphere in the dining room is somewhat rustic--very typical of Franconian Gasthof (Inn/Restaurant). Actually, this was the first time we dined in the main dining room. We loved sitting in the patio al fresco during warm summer months in the past. If you are in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, you may want to venture in to the not-so-busy section of this quaint Medieval town and try Gastof Butz for yourself. Warning: Franconian dishes tend to be very hearty--true comfort food. They do traditional pork dishes (including sausages) very well, so be aware.

Casually known as the Potato Restaurant, the potato is king here. The potato and garlic soup is a must have for the first course. Then save room. The main servings are LARGE. I highly recommend the Schweinshaxe, a German dish, which is a roasted ham hock or "pork knuckle". The ham hock is the end of the pig's leg, just above the ankle and below the meaty ham part. It was blue-collar and poor peoples' food so it is a cheap cut that is cooked for a long time. It is one of the 2 best I have ever had. They speak English and other languages in this casual place. If you go during tourist season it can be packed. If you are not used to German food, then you may want to steer away from the sauerkraut casseroles as the sauerkraut is delicious, but quite strong. This is not the type of place for a fast-food lover. Order a full meal, with beers, and you are here for at least one to two hours of non-stop eating and drinking and you will be so stuffed you will have to walk for an hour or if you are staying close by, a nap is definitely in order.

Wish I had taken pics of the food, because it all looked as delightful as it tasted. We had the Zwiebelkuchen (special) and Käsesuppe to start. Both fantastic for the adults and the kids. Unfortunately they were out of brats (not sure how that happens in Germany) during our visit, and that's what my son wanted. But he switched to the kid schnitzel with fries while both girls had the Spätzel. All three were very happy. My wife had the adult schnitzel, which was tasty although she declared the edges to be dry. My mom had the Käsespätzel, which was delicious anders oniony. I had a couple of beers and the ravioli, which were stuffed with heaven and happiness. Service was very pleasant and at the typical German leisurely pace, so it took a bit less than two hours. Perfect for us and what we're used to a this point, although I know that bothers some Americans. For all six of us the bill came to only €66. Great price, excellent food, competent friendly service. Brought some friends back to this place while they were touring Rothenburg about 8 months after our first visit. Food and service still fantastic. Salad was amazing, two kids and two adults went with the käsesuppe - loved it. Everything was great, everyone was fat and happy, and for 8 people with multiple drinks still under 100€.
