The park is larger than most, so perfect for playing large games as an adult like soccer or footy. The playground is pretty cool, shady and always popular for Mums to meet at with their kids. The events here include carols by candlelight, old car meetings and a free moonlight cinema which is always full of deck chairs and beanbags. There is some parking on site, the obahn and unlicensed transport nearby and right across the road is Tea Tree Plaza, one of the largest shopping centers in the state.

Home to the 'Civic Park Spectacular' which is a firework and music show with names such as Vanessa Amarosi and Guy Sebastian gracing the stage, Civic park does have great events for families. During the day there are outdoor fitness classes like Step Into Life and tai chi keeping the park lively and people gather there to play soccer, football or look like angsty teens. Civic park has always been well maintained and houses a small carpark, a playground and toilets - like any park, just be careful around them at night time!

I was a regular here with my kids for several years when we were living at Frewville, giving my wife a chance to study and giving the girls a run around in the fresh air, and we got a huge surprise when we returned not so long ago, just before Christmas, and found the fantastic renovations that had been done. McLeary Park always was a nice, safe, shady playground, with a quite elaborate climbing frame, almost a fort on stilts with a slide and netting to climb, and the spirit of that structure has been maintained with the more modern equipment in place now. There is still plentiful shade from the trees however the additional shade cloth is brilliant - I notice Unley and Burnside councils have made significant upgrades to a number of parks with shade and newer equipment. So, yet again, my kids had a ball here - three years older now, but just as enraptured. The only downside here is that there's no public convenience, so we had to pack up and head off to the nearby KFC for toilets. Other than that, beautiful place for a family picnic.

The burnside pool is just across the green if you want to go for a swim, personally I don't like public pools because of how much chlorine they have to pack into them, ever had chlorine induced hazy eye syndrome? Old (out of date) reviews & pictures of the park mention the space is a little rundown, however this has all changed! The playground is only around 12 months old and is small but AWESOME! There are two trampolines built into the squishy soft-fall ground, along with a super-fun multi-person swing and a great rope climbing-frame. The slide is definitely more suited at younger children, but I come here with the 3-12 year-olds I work with and they all tend to find something to keep them entertained. In addition, the outdoor gym equipment has all been replaced in the last few months. I haven't used it, but it is all very new and looks like it offers more resistance and more of a work-out than the old stuff. As for the 'skate park', it's not huge, but should keep local teens (and the fully grown blokes I see on it often) entertained. Finally, older reviews also stated there was little shade. Again, this has changed. The shade is plentiful and is a mix of trees and sails/shade cloth. There are also two barbecues, one which is completely shaded. If you live in the area I highly recommend you check out this little beauty.

At the risk of sounding like a meathead (I'm not!) the exercise equipment is so easy it could only be useful for the elderly and frail. And it's located right beside the skate park... a slightly humorous combination! The bathroom, built into the swimming centre, is accessible from the outside. It's OK in an emergency. Dogs are permitted to run free, but only between 5pm and 10am. The setting is natural and full of native veg, but lacks shade. It has wonderful play equipment, lots of space, sheltered table and chairs, beautiful trees and lawn, toilets and drink fountains. This is such a pretty and well maintained area with many walks and sections to the park. I have included a map of the park so you can have an idea of the space and fun you can have there. If you're wanting to have a large gathering at this park, I would suggest calling the Onkaparinga City Council (the number is listed in the business info section) to see if there's a booking system or a requirement to being able to request a certain area of the park. Visiting Thalassa would be a 'whole day' adventure to get the most out of the place. It sure looks like great fun and is definitely on my list of 'places to go back to and explore further'. In holiday times it's also full of teenagers- so if you're after Zen-like silence and stillness maybe this isn't the spot for you. While facilities aren't super competitive - no BBQs to speak of, only a few benches and bike racks - it is a green little spot within a minute of the Parade to have a moment or two of sunshine, especially if you've got kids or dogs.

The Jack Watckins Reserve on Churchill Road is really easy to miss. It's entrance is nestled between the railway yard (used mainly for storing the pylons for wind-farm windmills) and some light industry, but once you enter the car park you see rolling hills (Julie Andrews starts singing), a picturesque gum tree lined path, play equipment, circuit training equipment and even a bbq area! The area is perfect for a family picnic, with plenty to keep the junior kiddiwinkles entertained plus a basketball half court for the older sporties and plenty of room for a dob of the pigskin should the testosterone levels reach an appropriate level! Although the park has many fun options for all, it also has a serious side being dedicated to those who lost their lives due to Asbestos diseases as a result of working on the old Islington Railway line. There are many stories and writings located in the park and along the pathway that are definately worth the time to read. Even if you don't take the clan for a bbq day there, it is worth the time to swing by and see some of what Adelaide has hidden if you look hard enough. P.S. The Park is open until 8:00pm during daylight savings.

In fact, the old governor's mansion is located here, as well as lots of picnic areas, and a train line running through the middle. Actually, there was a time when you could catch the train through the park, and get off at a couple of stations in the middle, though these have since closed down. Still, it's a pretty cool park, and I would like to go back so as to explore it more.

This place is amazing, definitely a great way to spend a day with the family. We took advantage of one of the many picnic area to enjoy our pre-packed lunch. There is a little kiosk there, or at least there was today as being Father's Day I am sure they were expecting a crowd. We have a baby so we really appreciated the abundance of shade and grassy areas for bubs to get her crawl on. There is an awesome adventure playground which our child is far too young for but would definitely capture the interest of a range of ages of children. There are a MILLION tennis courts! I'm actually not sure why so many are needed but if you are looking for a tennis court you'll find one or 20 here. We strolled through the state flora nursery at did a tour of the old government house. I'm a bit of a history nerd and thoroughly enjoyed myself. I can't wait to return to attempt some of the many walking/cycling trails. This place is awesome.
