Decided to try them since we were in the area. I ordered through Yelp which was very easy. For pick up: I went to the address according to my gps, and it's in the Ranch 99 plaza. There are plenty of parking spots but they were all occupied. I got out of the car and walked around. I could not find the place. I checked their Yelp map and it said it was next to soon tofu but next door was a hair salon and a dessert shop. I looked at Yelp again to find a phone number so I can call and see where they were. No phone number. I tried to read reviews to see if anyone would have mentioned where they were exactly located, come to find out it was inside Soon's Tofu restaurant. Who would have thought?! Yelp needs to clearly state the location! Anyway, thank you to the previous reviewer, I finally found which direction to go. The door was propped open wide and there was a sign that said hi city. Not visible to us newbies. :( luckily my food was ready which was great and sure, I got in a few extra steps trying to find this place. The food: We ordered 1 Salmon FURIKAKE poke with salad greens, 1 The Classic Hawaiian with sushi rice and purple rice, and 1 Build Your Own Poke Bowl - 2 Scoops of salmon poke with salad greens. Saw this new spot pop up on my yelp feet and decide to try out since I love Hawaiian food. When trying Hawaiian for the first time I always go with the loco moco and musubi. Also grabbed a poke bowl to try out. Since we are all still in Shelter in Place I ordered via mobile via their website from my car. Very easy to place an order and was done in the 10-15 minutes that was stated on the site. Gave me enough time to pick up a few items I needed at the ranch. The loco moco was pretty good. Gravy was a little congealed since it had to travel back home but they gave a good portion of meat and was spiced well. Mac salad was decent and egg was cooked just right. Bag tipped over in my car but lid held everything in so no biggie. Good take on the Hawaiian classic. Also ordered a Poke bow with 2 scoops. Pretty easy to select toppings via the website. Here's what we got. I'm so glad I was in Foster City so I was able to try out this place. It's located inside Soon's Tofu restaurant, right next to Ranch 99. You can order online and pick up when it's ready. They have diy poke bowls and some pre selected poke bowls. We decided to build our own. I tried to salmon furikake and the fire tartare with masago, green onions and seaweed salad then added on the house calamansi ponzu and spicy mayo sauce. Fish was super fish and I loved how they added extra sauce and furikake. Also their masago has a lot of flavor! I've been to a lot of good poke places (Go Fish, Tuna Kahuna,etc) but this place is honestly my favorite after just trying it out once. Definitely recommend this place! I will be back read more

I was super excited to try this place after reading the yelp reviews cause I do adore Hawaiian poke. We ordered two custom poke bowls - the hamachi was good but the classic Hawaiian tuna didn't have much flavor and didn't taste that fresh either sadly. Rice was meh. Not very generous portions on the fish as compared to other poke places we frequent. Seaweed salad addition was generous but again - just the standard stuff you say at most Asian places selling it. The house-made chicken spam musubi was pretty interesting and worth trying at least once. Hard to beat the real deal on flavor on regular spam but housemade is impressive. I also ordered the fire tartare hand roll which didn't come entirely assembled - seaweed part was in a separate pouch on it's own - I'm not sure how I was supposed to get the filling inside it neatly without a plate. The other pic on yelp showed it already put together so that was a bummer that mine was not. It seemed to be mostly rice with a little bit of filling - the sauce was good - nicely balanced with a bit of heat and tang. The salmon chowder was our least favorite - barely any salmon to be found at all - I had to look hard for some pink bitty pieces - mostly potato and teeny cut pieces of celery - nice amount of pepper - more of a porridge consistency than a chowder. Tried a few spoonfuls and than decided not to take it home for later as I knew that the rest of my crew would be disappointed. A long drive for not the best experience. Folks there were nice enough - clean and fairly quick turnaround. If you are in the area - the spam is worth considering and perhaps the loco moco are better bets. read more

We walked in, placed our order and waited about 5 minutes. Like many reviewers have already noted, they're running this place out of the Korean restaurant. I love that they have a form for easy ordering. Service was prompt and courteous. Poke bowl was $12. I like that they had shirataki yam noodles available so I chose that mixed with greens as my base. 2 scoops of protein: fire tartar and salmon furikake -- both were really tasty and fresh. Topped with spicy aioli sauce. To finish: green onions, lomi tomatoes, sushi ginger, masago, furikake, fried onions. Flavors were really good but portion size was way too small for $15. I'm always on the hunt for more authentic poke and this is one of the closest ones I've found! They have the pre-marinated fish here with my favorite flavor - spicy tuna with the masago mixed in. Just like Hawaii. I also got the furikake salmon and the Hawaiian style. I did think the Hawaiian style could have used a little bit more flavor but I'm glad I got some spicy mayo on top of it. I always take a look at his meals and try things that I've not tasted before. With the remote work, he only has one choice of eatery each day so Hi City was it for today's meal here in Redwood City, CA. I was interested in the Adobe Chicken he ordered. Oh it was awful. Think of a hospital meal -- super bland -- that has NO sauce, super mild spices. From the Forkable photo, macaroni was NOT expected with this meal. It was NOT mac salad delivered -- another reviewer raved about the Hi City Mac salad. This was NOT that, it was literally macaroni with nothing else. The only good thing was the corn -- it was good. Too bad there wasn't loads of corn and less of everything else. The sushi rice bed it was on -- lots of rice but it was not even good sushi rice. How can you mess THAT up? I do like that they also offer poke; however, I probably wouldn't come here for poke because I am very loyal to my favorite poke places. But make no mistake--this is not just a marketing ploy, and the friendly folks behind HI City are definitely proud of their poke (crafted by their chefs from Hawaii), and they opened here to preserve their brand, as sales in their main SF location have suffered due to the Covid pandemic. The order format largely followed that of a typical build-your-own poke restaurant: base, poke, sides, and toppings. For my base, I chose the mixed greens and shirataki (yam) noodles and followed it with crab salad and thick slices of cucumbers. But the real reason to try HI City is for the poke itself--the Classic Hawaiian was made of ahi tuna mixed with sea salt, sesame, and dressing, and you could really taste the high quality of the fish. I also tried the marinated sweet spicy shrimp, which were super juicy and packed with flavor as well! The spicy mayo sauce on the side was a great complement to all the different elements of the bowl, which I finally topped off with green onions, lomi lomi tomatoes, corn, pickled ginger, edamame, fried onions, and housemade furikake for a nice crunch! Finally a local spot where you can purchase poke by the pound!! My husband has been on the hunt for some good poke that you can purchase by the pound (without having to buy a bowl; he just wants it straight up no extra frills!). He attempted to contact Da Poke Man a few times to purchase poke by the pound but was unfortunately denied all times, only to be deferred to purchase a chicken combo plate. If my husband wanted chicken, he would go to "da Chicken man" but why can't you get poke from "DA Poke Man"?! All sarcasm aside, we found a place that would take our business and HI City is that place. We ordered: -1 pound of the classic Hawaiian poke: the poke itself hit the spot in terms of flavor and freshness. The only downside is that they pack the poke with a mound of seaweed salad on top, and I wish I knew that ahead of time and would've asked for it on the side. I think the juices from the seaweed salad alters the flavor of the poke a bit, especially if it's been sitting on top of it for a while. I prefer it without. -1 pound of the salmon poke: this was my favorite! Very flavorful and fresh! Didn't taste too fishy and the seasoning was on point! Downside was the heaping mound of seaweed salad on top, but will request it to be on the side next time. -2 breakfast masubis: pretty good but a little overpriced. There's tomago and avocado which are automatic hitters. It took a little while to make so I'm glad to know it's fresh made to order. Overall, moderately safe. Pre-order and come during off-hours to be safer. FOOD -- for context, this is our first visit for a weeknight dinner. Appetizers - -Spam/chicken musubi -- both are great, spam had a nice Maillard/umami-roasty flavor. We were pleasantly surprised by the chicken, which had more texture, but are more likely to order the spam. -Mac salad -- The texture was... overcooked. It's less rich than the one at L&Ls and this comes super cold. Garlic was definitely present, but it tasted like extract or was off that night. We'll be skipping this one next time. Poke - -Classic -- shoyu/citrus taste, limu seaweed -- IMO, pre-marinated poke is where it's at and this one was good. The flavor penetrates the fish, the limu makes it more legit, and crispy furikake/onion reminds me of kukui nut -Spicy -- Pretty mild spice. Classic is where it's at! -Rice -- HI City serves their rice COLD! We had sushi rice and brown rice. This was unexpected, strange at first (hard, but not hard) and will turn some people off. We were split on this one. VALUE -- There was plenty of fish to go with the rice. Sides are discounted if ordered with poke. Plenty of food to fill us up! TIP -- -items available was less than what's shown in menu photos. This place is a little hidden because they do not really have signage but they share the same space with Soon Tofu. I ordered the build your own poke bowl with ahi tuna and kurikake salmon, under a bed of greens. Everything was sooo fresh, especially the fish ! What is really special about this place is that they have homemade kurikake. The kurikake it has a little crunch to it that add a really nice texture. Tried this place since I saw it on DoorDash. I ordered the sweet miso salmon poke since I'm generally not a fan of BYO poke and prefer more traditional Hawaiian style poke. Oh boy, was this NOT it. I ordered it with no edamame and extra poke, sushi rice as the base. It came smothered in furukake, edamame, and corn (would have gotten no corn or furukake either if it was listed in the description, it's not). After picking out all that extra stuff, I was left with poke (clearly not extra) and a huge scoop of crab salad, which covered about half of the bowl. Whatever, I'm hungry, let's dig in. Yuck, yuck, YUCK. It's completely drenched in a sickeningly sweet syrup, so much so that the sushi rice base is literally porridge. The sweet miso syrup is so sweet, when I had a sip of coke afterwards, the coke was bland. Even the crab salad was a miss, mushy and also very sweet, probably from soaking up the syrup. All in all, probably the most disgusting poke I've ever eaten. Please do not order here. There are plenty of poke options nearby, and while they might not offer good authentic Hawaiian poke, I'd eat at any of those places over this place in a heartbeat. read more

Unfortunately, I wasn't a fan of the poke bowl. I built my own with salmon and hamachi. The hamachi was extremely fishy, and I don't like fishy fish so I ended up giving most of the hamachi to my boyfriend. The crab salad and sushi rice were ok. I liked the furikake and fried onion. The "lomi tomato" had a strong flavor, and I would have liked it in a different setting (like maybe on a bruschetta), but I wouldn't recommend adding it to poke. My boyfriend got the "loco moco" plate. It was tasty in a simple, homemade kind of way, maybe not justifying the $16 price tag. I did like their ordering strategy where you mark what you want on a laminated menu. But overall, if it weren't for Covid, I would probably give them 2 stars for the food. All the bad reviews from other Yelpers on poor food quality, missing food items, bad customer service, and insanely crazy restaurant owner are all true! Beware of this place and don't give the owner your business and money! The owner treats customers with no respect. My experience today with my girlfriend was despicable. We both ordered poke bowls for to go. After opening our meals thirty minutes later, we discovered that her poke bowl was missing noodles. I called the restaurant to bring this to their attention with no resolution expectations but rather to bring attention to the matter. The owner picked up, and I explained the situation. He said that he would remake the bowl for us. We came back later in the day since the restaurant is closed between 3:00-4:30pm. My girlfriend explained the situation to the female staff member and then out came the owner berating and yelling at us. He was telling us things that contradicted what he said over the phone, saying that we were making a fuss over missing noodles and that replacing a bowl loses the restaurant $15 in revenue which is the price of the item. He starts rambling on about how he owns two restaurants which added no value to the conversation, and gives a rant on the noodles. My girlfriend and I were awestruck on the unprofessionalism. He starts yelling at my girlfriend to just tell him what she wants in the poke bowl then berates her on the items that she chooses. He makes a half assed replacement and gives us the to-go poke bowl with no lid. At this point, we were fed up with his behavior and and his rude treatment of us. We decide to leave due to the hostile atmosphere and then the owner comes out and gives us two free mochi ice cream. Missing ingredients, contacted them to express our concerns to let them know of the situation, but surprisingly, the owner advised us he would create an entire new bowl, free of charge. HI City is incredible and the best find in Foster City in a long time. I've been ordering takeout from a lot of places in Foster City during this pandemic, and this place takes the crown. I ordered their poke yesterday and went back for loco moco today. For the poke, I created my own bowl, hard to go wrong when you know exactly what you like. But the poke might actually be the freshest I've ever had outside of Hawaii. And each ingredient I chose, they included just the right amount to create a delicious combination. I fell in love again as soon as I took my first bite of the loco moco with its delicious gravy. With this, you get a base (I chose white rice), lomi lomi tomatoes, and mac salad. A little pricey for my stingy self, but delicious and the price is probably consistent with other places you'd find in the Bay Area anyway. Also, I don't know if this is a temporary promotional thing, but you can add extras for a reduced cost when you order an entree, it seems. I got the miso soup for $1, but I think they also offer chicken spam musubis for $2 and something they call "chef's salmon chowder" for $3. The soup was different from others I've had, pretty good and the flavor isn't only concentrated in the stuff that settles on the bottom, keeping a more consistent flavor throughout. I know leaving such a strong review will get expectations sky high, just walk into this knowing the food is above average and see where it takes you. I got a poke bowl and the loco moco bowl. Imo both was just ok. The one thing that should stand out the most is the quality of the proteins. None of the fish tasted high quality like other places. The loco moco also did not taste authentic at all or no where near close to the loco moco in Hawaii. Supposedly ownership is from Hawaii so I was pretty shocked as to how they can claim this is "authentic".
