On the quest to find the best burger in Kansas City, I tested Hi-Boy Drive-In, and it honestly did quite well. Hi-Boy is a small burger spot with no seating inside and NO DRIVE THRU, which I find charming. It harkens back to the 50s when it was first opened and even has a neon sign that looks great at night. But the whole visit here was about the burger, and while they don't have bacon here, the burger was cooked to perfection. With just a bit of char around the edges for a crunch and a flavorful and juicy middle of the patty would've been enough to get a great review. But Hi-Boy also makes an AMAZING French fry that I couldn't get enough of. This spot is a very long drive from my house, but that's not going to stop me from visiting again and again. If social media existed in the 1980's then this Hi-Boy would have hundreds of 'check-ins" from me. I used to work just a couple of miles from here for about a decade and I was regularly here to destroy their daily specials or my favorite - the Double Hi-Boy Jr. with rings. An inside walk up counter without any seating on the premises, is one of the reasons my visits have been infrequent over the past 35 years. I usually head to one of their two other locations now so I don't have to eat in my vehicle. This past Saturday i did stop in and order a tenderloin, since i am in the middle of "Ralphie's Tenderloin Tour" with 12 tenderloins under my belt (figuratively and literally) in the past month. Unfortunately their breaded pork tenderloin is mass produced and frozen, so it did not make it close to the top tier in my rankings, but for what it is ...it ain't bad. I did like that they put plenty of veggie toppings and their burger sauce on it for maximum taste. I'll probably stick with the burgers on all future visits. 3.5 stars for the tendy... 5 stars for the burgers, rings, cyclones, variety and value of the menu, and of course the decades of nostalgia and fond memories. read more

Of the three HiBoy Drive-Ins, this is by FAR the best!! The other two don't hold up to this standard. The HiBoy with cheese is one of the best burgers in KC. Hands down. Don't sleep on this. Great shakes, including caramel, strawberry, pineapple and a lot more. Hamburgers are huge, imo, which explains why it's packed with blue collar dudes at lunchtime. I usually order a kid-size burger and it is plenty for me, along with onion rings or fries or fried mushrooms. No seating, but a nice big parking lot, so take out or eat in your car. I got into St Louis late night after a very long drive and I was HUNGRY. I was very happy to find an open burger joint just up the road from my hotel. Everything about this place was perfect - the nostalgia, the service, the prices and the FOOD! I ordered a cheeseburger and fried pickle spears and both were absolutely delicious. I could not get over the size of the pickle spears! Really good quality for what you're paying and you'll be full. I wish I had more time to go back and try more of their menu items, including the shakes which looked outstanding. My next trip to KC I will absolutely be stopping by again! read more

I've loved this restaurant since I was a kid. It's a must try side if the road eatery you have to try if you're into a good ol fashioned burger l, shake and fry situation. On my most recent visit, I just need a little something to snack on so I got the onion rings and a small cherry limeade. The taste and quality are the same, but the price has definitely gone up! That's inflation! The onion rings haven't changed a bit! Still crispy, sweet and fried to perfection. The service is always good, and the cooks get you in and out. First time customer, ordered a hi boy at 10:30 in the morning this past weekend and the burger did not seem fresh to order. It was dry like they cooked the burger, patted all the grease off, and had it sitting in a warmer waiting to fill an order. Just a basic burger. Bun was fresh and the fries were on point though. HiBoy Burger Joint has been around for 66 years and there's definitely good reasons why. It has been a good minute since I drove in to grab a burger, but I recently had a hankering for one so I made my way there. As I pulled in there was a steady flow of customers inside and others lined throughout the drive-in parking lot which has been the norm over the years. It's also a tell-tale sign for folks that are first-timers that something very special awaits them. The burger was ginormous & the sack was unbelievably overloaded with onion rings, enough for at least 2 meals, woo hoo! I must admit that my only disappointment was the shake had way too much cherry flavoring. Other than that, I was pleased. As far as dining in, forget it. There's plenty of standing room inside, but no seating so to-go is your only choice. One of the things I enjoy about HiBoy is they don't just make great burgers, but they also serve up a mean tenderloin, fish sandwich, chili dog, Italian steak, chicken sandwich, corn dog bites & the list goes on... We stayed right up the road from one of these, and my coworker swore up and down by their shakes. So, naturally, I had to go all in with a burger and a shake. Burgers are better than the average fast food chain burger and the shake is in fact a thick, creamy delicious drink. Lived in Kansas City my whole life and just now visiting this establishment. Let me say I was not disappointed! I was surprised by there not being a drive thru window but we happily got out and walked inside. The inside has such great "back in the day" vibes. Ordered the cheeseburger, fried pickles and onion rings. So good!! Will make sure to go back and take photos of my food next time, I was just anxious to try it and didn't think about pictures until all my food was gone. The staff was really nice, there was a lull in between customers when we got there so I was able to take my time looking at the menu. They didn't pressure at all and even made recommendations. My frequent lunch companion and co-worker is always teaching me about KC treasures. After all, he's lived here his entire life and I'm a transplanted Texan. When I told him I was taking my family to a Royals game a couple of nights ago he asked if we had any pre-game traditions. I said, "We don't tailgate, if that's what you mean." He told me that his family's routine for every trip to Kauffman Stadium was to stop at HiBoy Drive In. I pulled up the website and, POOF-- there was a new Hollan family tradition! HiBoy looks like and old Dairy Queen that's been enclosed and tailored to the unique HiBoy aesthetic. You order at the counter and wait on your order. There's no dining room, so you know when you go there you're getting take out. My family of four ordered a 1/4 pound cheeseburger, a Junior HiBoy, a 1/4 pound HiBoy and a Tenderloin Sandwich. We also tried Onion Rings, Tots, and Fried Pickle spears. Prices were very reasonable and the quality was SURPRISINGLY GOOD for what one might expect at an establishment like this. We topped off our meals with a strawberry limeade and a Barq's Red Cream Soda. It was PERFECT. I didn't give it five stars because it just doesn't feel like a five star establishment, but it was a SOLID four stars and I'll DEFINITELY be going back! read more

Ordered only the junior Hi-Boy and my first bite left me with something different than I am used to tasting. I am not sure what it was, but it went away and came back in the last couple of bites. I love coming here for the burgers. It's a flat burger (I like thick and juicy) but the seasonings and fresh toppings make these good and it's always made fresh! The fries and tator tots are always hot and seasoned with just the right amount of salt. The shakes are really good and made with care. I've tried the cherry fudge and the pineapple upside down shake, both were delicious although I couldn't taste much of the cherry in the fudge. I'm sorry to have to write a review like this, but this had to be the worst hamburger I've ever had. I've had burgers all around the world and this takes the cake. I ordered a Hi-Boy double cheeseburger and was looking forward to trying them out. I still have an aftertaste of charcoal, burnt something in my mouth. I don't know if it's the way they cleaned the grill quality of the meat or whatever they use to clean whatever they cook with, but it was horrible and had to throw it out. Five for the milkshake and stellar service. We went in and asked what milkshake our cashier recommended, and she immediately had suggestions! The chocolate fudge peanut butter, or birthday cake. It is so nice when people have suggestions rather than pushing the most expensive option, or saying, "ummm, well, umm, it depends on what you're going for... ummmm." The food was hot and the shake was thick and creamy, The only frustration was that the order taker obviously could not hear me because I was trying to order another burger but I gave up when it was obvious that she could not hear me well. I eat here about once every 2 weeks, but never added it to Yelp? My bad. By far the best hamburger joint in the midwest, Why? Cause it's damn good. It's been here forever. It's a dive, with the original sign and original ordering system-you go inside to order, and wait for your food. And, it works. They've never had seats. The food is really tasty, onion rings, and the shakes. The shakes are made with scoops of fresh fruit and are mixed one at a time on a shake mixer that looks like it's from the 50's. The cashiers take your order and write it down-no computerized system here. After waiting, you get it, and go to your car. I always get a cherry limeade, that goes without saying. The limeade is well mixed, with cherry syrup that you can actually taste. They include 2 cherries at the bottom. The medium sized beverage is over sized, which pleases me. My favorite, by far. I can't go by here without stopping for a limeade, unless I'm full from the Mexican restaurant near by. This is one location where I will eat a cheeseburger, and they are good. I order mine plain, and I've never had a problem. The meat is thin, and large, with cheese. That's how I like it. Onion rings are breaded, and made there, not frozen, and are crisp and sweet. I love love love them. The location is close to the Sports Complex, and it gets quite busy around the noon hour with businesses nearby.
