I will NEVER eat at a Hickory Tavern again. Nick, the manager at Hickory Tavern in Gastonia, has the worst social tack of anybody I have ever encountered. We had a party of 8 that planned to eat there tonight to only be told when we arrived that they could not seat or serve us. Yes they could not serve us!!!!! They could not seat us outside because someone had made reservations. OK, then we asked for seating inside. BUT NO, they already had reservations for 8 inside also. Is that all the seating they have. We were then told that they could seat us but we would have to be done in 45 minutes, OR we would have to wait over an hour and a half (after the other parties were finished) to serve us. Nick was not very tackfull in delivering this information and we were very insulted with his demeanor. This is not the first time that I have encounter Nick at this location. Over a year ago, he was also very rude when I had a complaint about my bill, which he told me that that was what it is and there was nothing that he could do about it. I hate this place and will never spend my money at this place... Nick needs some people training if he is going to be in a managers position of any kind working with the public. read more

Was in town for the day and came to this place to eat. The service is awful and very slow. Two tables came in way after we did and they got their food way before us and all we got was a burger and tots. Not to mention we waited 10 mins after being seated before flagging down someone to ask if we could order our drinks. Then proceeded to order and appetizer and they brought out burnt pretzel bites that you could smell that they were burnt before even attempting to eat them. Train your staff better. Very large place with plenty of seating and TVs to watch. The beer selection at the bar was great. Server addressed us quickly and was extremely friendly. The restaurant is filled with funny song quotes along the walls. I got the pretzels and cheese and the pretzels were soft, hot, and delicious. I also ordered a power bowl and added a few ingredients and it came out just as I ordered it and tasted delicious. Worth a stop if you're in town. read more

Sad Sad visit. HT has always been our go to because of the selection and service since moving here 2 years ago. Last nights visit was a disappointment. After receiving a cold Queso appetizer the manager bought us another one with the cheese warm but bottom of the bag of chips. The burgers and chicken sandwich were good but the service was terrible. Poor management and changed the hours of operation on New Year's Eve despite multiple repeated post on social media saying come ring in the new years with us open until after midnight. Stopped serving customers before 2200 (10 pm). Had DJ on had and refused to serve anything after 10pm. Do not waste your money in this place go elsewhere. Poorly ran and managed. Customer service is not their top priority. Have to hunt your server down and management no where to be seen even when you ask to speak to them. read more

I had a call in order 12 -12 . I pre paid online for food and tip. When I arrived, the manager Paul told me my food was on the bar and that "she " would be with me momentarily. five minutes went by two people got their food. I've been to other Hickory Tavern locations but this was my first visit here in Gastonia. When I told them that, our waitress said "Well we're the best!". I like the confidence and friendly smack talk. The draught list is fairly impressive and the prices reasonable. My Mushroom Swiss Burger was a massive, delicious, cooked onion covered two handfuls of happiness. Serving it on Sourdough just really elevated it to another level and those crispy, crunchy tater tots are the perfect addition. The kids meals have big portions as well and include a side and a drink. Our waitress was a champ to boot! HT takes being a part of the community seriously and helps out substantially with fund raising. Just for example, this Christmas, 30% of the proceeds from HT gift card sales at our school go back to our school. Bravo! read more

HT is typically a good food, good environment sports bar. We've visited twice in the last couple of weeks and while the food and atmosphere have been as advertised the service speed has been at best lacking. On this visit we waited 45 minutes after ordering and when our food still wasn't out we ended up taking it to go. HT management needs to get its hands around the guest experience. There are several reasons why this place deserves 4 starts. They have a varied menu and everything I've ever tried has been good. They do an especially good job with their nachos and their burgers. Several friend and family members go here frequently and they keep going back. The staff is professional and friendly and the service is consistently good. Their food prices are reasonable and they have regualr food & drink specials. On Sunday, they have NFL ticket so you can see every game on big HD TV's. Great location too and during the summer you can sit outside and enjoy the patio. This particlual evening we shared the nachos which were really good. First customer in line at the 11:30 opening today. Restaurant was clean enough and the ambience nice as always. I arrived to eat w my special needs daughter. After a waitress arrived at our table I was informed I would need to be patient as she would be the only waitress for the lunch shift. She wasn't joking ! It took 45 mins for 2 salads to arrive and an extra 30 mins for a take out quesadilla that was not what we ordered ( they didn't remove the jalapeños as ordered) to finally arrive. At 12:55 almost 1.5 hours after arriving we left. Food was ok, service was obviously poor. Can't imagine what anyone who arrived after me was treated to. After spending close to $50 it'll be a good while before we come back again. read more

My family and I come here regularly for Oyster special night (Saturdays) each visit is wonderful & delicious, but tonight was exceptionally wonderful had the pleasure of being served by Shawn. Shawn was attentive, patient, courteous, and professional. Tonight just so happened to be my step-dad's birthday & veteran's day (he's a Marine) and it was my first day out I'd the house in 10 days since I was discharged home after a very invasive hip surgery. Shawn made sure we enjoyed every aspect of our "outing" from the second he knew that. He was delightful before, but really went above-and-beyond when he knew our story. I've been to several HT's in the Charlotte Areas for years and always had good experiences. This one by far is the WORST! I will never ever go to this one again. So, on Saturday (March 1, 2020), my husband and I stopped at this particular one to get a bite to eat. Everything was going well, had a live band and all. Well, after we ate and sat there a few minutes, we had place a credit card in the booklet looking thing so that the waitress could see that we were ready to check out. For some reason, the waitress kept passing our table and never taking notice that we were ready to go. She went to the waitress station and there was another waitress at the station, as well! Our table was near the station, so my husband turns around trying to get our waiter attention. She was busy doing something and didn't notice my husband trying to get her attention. He doing all this while the other waitress was right there doing something as well, I guess but she she sees my husband trying to get our waiter attention. So, my husband tells this waitress to get our waitress attention. With her RUDE self she takes the booklet payment thing out of my husband hand and place it on the banister as if my husband was getting on her nerves. All we was trying to do was pay for our food and go home-smh So, my husband was upset and had a few words with the rude waitress concerning her rude actions. Our waitress finally comes over to us and take the payment while my husband is requesting to speak to the manager. The manager comes over to our table. My husband is trying to explain why he is upset. The manager makes things even worst. He starts talking to my husband as if my husband didn't know what he was talking about. He tells my husband he is drunk. And now I'm getting upset with the manager behavior and the way he was speaking to my husband. My husband had only ordered 1 glass of draft beer and he hadn't finished drinking it and this manager had the audacity to call my husband drunk...WOW!! My husband and I got up to leave and my husband and the manager still having words with each other. The manager was so UNPROFESSIONAL!! He going back and forth with my husband then he tell my husband to get out as we were preparing to look leave anyway. Now this really pissed me off then I had words for this manager. Then he tell us both to get out, he threaten to call the police and everything. He followed us to the door still going back and forth with my husband and I, holding the phone calling the police‍....For what?? We didn't do anything to him or the waitresses but had a few words for their poor and rude service! This Hickory Tavern is TRASH!! and I will never ever go there again! I stopped by earlier this month to try their brunch menu out and I am so obsessed with their chicken and waffles!! It was pretty sweet especially with the gravy but boy was it good. The only thing I didn't like was that it just came with a side of bacon... the bacon was pretty burnt and I would've rather had some options for the side such as a side of fruit BUT I'd still recommend this to anyone that wants something sweet for brunch. read more

Great place to watch the game as there are plenty of tv's to choose from. The food is tasty for a chain. I didn't give it a 5 due to our waitress. God love her as she was sweet, but needs some training. It was shift change just as our food came out. I have visited Hickory Tavern in Gastonia on several occasions. This particular visit was not one of the best visits. The hostess Carmen was wonderful. Carmen seated me and stated that my server would be with me shortly. The restaurant was not crowded. I sat for 10 minutes before Carmen returned and apologized for the delay and proceeded to take my drink order. My server did make an appearance, took my food order, bought me a glass of water and my food which was prepared incorrectly. I didn't get my order from the bar until after my food arrived and I had to remind my server of my bar order. So, needless to say I was not pleased with my visit. Thanks to Carmen, I will return. But I've been five or six times and haven't had a decent meal yet. I order something different every time in hopes that I'll finally find something that taste good. Hickory Tavern is the type of place you go to grab some beers, eat some tapas style food and watch the game. Most expect it to be this wonderful dine in restaurant which is why I suspect they place the more 'meal' type items on the menu. But people, it's called a tavern, you don't go here for your cordon bleu, you go for the bbq wings and pints. With that disclaimer, I enjoyed everything about Hickory Tavern. I had the bbq wings and my fiancé has the baked potatoe. Temperature wise they were hot and had plenty of meat on the bone. The baked potatoe was mild in size, but packed many toppings inside. My fiancé stated it may have been the best she's had. We sat at the bar to be able to watch a baseball game. We had some of their beers on tap and a couple mixed drinks. They were spot on with the amount of alcohol and mix. The bartender talked with us frequently, bet never enough to intrude on our evening. I gave this 5 stars simply for all those reasons. Great atmosphere, but go for the right reasons. Not for a date, not for a family gathering (unless you're diehard Red Sox fans). read more

Food is always good. I usually get a salad and usually the health but salad. The salads are a good size and filling. I also like the fact that they do accommodate for dietary restrictions as well (think Keto). Staff is friendly and check in frequently. Restaurant is always clean. Call in orders are always ready in time, but bar can tend to be slow to notice you and take your orders. I rarely give perfect 5 stars so for a slow service and the fact that their menu options vary depending on the hours is why I give 3 stars.
