Another year and I'm still going strong with AFC Fitness. I come for the group fitness/yoga classes…read moreand truly feel that they are some of the best around. Some of these instructors are far better than at most gyms. Barre Fusion with Sevon gets me revved with amazing music, challenging strength not with heavy weights but with body and/or light weights and plenty of reps, alternating with fun and relatively easy dance/aerobic moves. If you can grapevine, you can handle it. And there is zero judgement or ego here. Everyone is just doing their best at their level. While the Studio A floor is newly updated (yay!), I would love if they added a real barre in one of the studios. We use chairs but it would make a difference to the movements. Sevon still keeps Barre Fusion amazing. She is conscious of body alignment and form, with safe, smart Pilates and dance moves. Noah's Hatha and Gentle Yoga classes are doable and challenging for all levels. He has so many years of experience in yoga, breath work and alignment that makes his classes the safest and wisest ones. He cues poses by discrete anatomical descriptions. For those who are paying attention, this is the difference between passive or mindless poses and active, thoughtful postures and a decent amount of effort. It's called architectural movement for a reason. I have left many a Gentle Yoga class feeling sore and/or sweaty! You don't need to be flexible do yoga, you just need to be open to learning. Marc's Gentle Yoga classes are also extremely safe, can be modified, and light and fun. His sense of humor reminds us that life doesn't have to always be so serious, and he always keeps the vibe focused and positive. The cleaning crew in the women's locker room are kind, diligent and deserve a huge shout out because they work so hard. Jivali studio could really use some TLC in terms of ventilation and humidity control. Perhaps even some fans when it is really warm. I still wish AFC could spend some time updating the equipment in Jivali - more thick blocks (most yoga students seem to benefit from these than the smaller ones but there aren't enough for a class of 16), cleaner and new yoga blankets, yoga straps for all. Bolsters would be amazing. It's evident that students don't wipe down or spray the equipment after use, which given the atmosphere of Jivali, seems useful. All told, AFC Fitness is still a great place for classes. The front desk staff are always so friendly. Melissa has a smile on her face every time I see her! The community feel of this gym is still very palpable. It's a bright part of my world. The free 30 day trial is worth your time.

Johns yoga class is the absolute best! My first yoga class with John, and subsequent classes…read morebrought tears. The class was/is such a healing source for me. I started out taking Johns Tuesday and Thursday class offered at 11:30 am. After 4 weeks I felt the difference in the way my body moved, it was more flexible and there is a calmness that I now experience. Johns choice of music, his readings and yoga practices has made a tremendous positive difference in my life. Johns' yoga class is the best, I recommend this class to family and friends. I was introduced to Kendrick Rec Center by the Manayunk Sports & Social Leagues. It has something…read morefor everyone: several baseball fields, an indoor and outdoor basketball court, tennis courts, gymnastics, and more. We use the baseball fields for kickball and softball while the tennis courts support dodgeball. I'm always happy with how well the fields and courts are maintained. They offer a more pleasant experience than the other fields we sometimes get stuck on! Apparently, they offer a boxing program too! Once I check it out, I'll be happy to share my thoughts. The only downside to Kendrick are the restrooms. The good news, is they have them available and sized appropriately. However, they aren't kept up as much as they should be - at least its seems that way on some evening games. Still, compared to other places, I'm just happy to have a bathroom option!

This review is for the pool. Like most NW Philadelphians I drove past the Ridge and Roxborough Ave…read morecorner a million times wondering what was behind the tall brick walls. Well, it turns out there is a completely free pool on the other side! The entrance is on Ridge Ave. and you can park on all sides of the Kendrick and there is a parking lot on the Pensdale side, but it's a touch further to walk. When you enter, it seems a bit old school as you will see benches and clothing hooks and a sign that says "Changing Area." This facility was built in 1925 so apparently back then people would just change plein air. Don't change there now. Walk through the entrance and you will be greeted by a friendly staff. The pool is great. There are only benches, no chairs. It's also all concrete so bring a towels or other devices to lay on. Consider bringing a camping chair for long stretched of hanging out. The water is clean and fresh. The staff is super attentive. The history is amazing. This is a best kept secret of the Roxborough area. Food and drink is NOT permitted. Definitely don't bring glass. I suspect it's cool to bring a plastic water bottle. Respect the pool, rules, and the staff and enjoy a FREE place to cool down in the summer.
