The inpatient and outpatient programs have been quite a roller coaster ride for me. But better than anything, it's probably been life-saving. The inpatient feels a little prison-ey when you're restricted to unit. This is weird because at other facilities I've been in, nobody leaves until discharged. But when everyone else gets to go outside and down for meals, to the gym, and to the library, and you can't, it feels punitive. I was involuntary because of a 3-day letter, yet I was well behaved. This being said, the therapists inpatient are more helpful than other places I've been. You really get an instructive atmosphere, and participation is optional but highly encouraged. I like that everyone is assigned one of the therapists for their stay, too. You get someone checking in on you daily. The outpatient stuff though, is stellar. Michelle and Brian (PHP therapists) are a credit to the social work profession. I feel seen and heard by them, and they do so much more than read some papers at you. They engage patients, and teach this stuff in a way that's accessible and understandable for all. Plus, it's easy to see when someone is genuine and that they love their job. These 2 people have made all the negative things so worth it. Michelle and Brian (Allie is great too, but I didn't get to know her very well) are life savers. Oh, also, this whole place is super queer friendly. I rarely had to give my preferred name (only with a new to me therapist like 3 times in 2 inpatient and 3 outpatient) and they honor preferred pronouns too! Additionally, if you're within 25 miles of the facility, they will provide transportation for outpatient programs. And they feed you for lunch in the PHP. There's also a crap ton of fidget toys in the group rooms, and you can feel free to bring your own, and color and stuff in group. Like, they get that these things help neuro spicy people to actually pay attention! read more

This was the worst experience of my life, this place literally gave me nightmares. The staff was absolutely horrible and disrespectful very rude. The place was very dirty when shown to my room it was not even clean before I arrived hairs all over the bathroom dirt everywhere. They didn't give me my medication until after 3 days being there and one they wouldn't give me at all. This horrible place should definitely be shut down. read more

I was admitted in early February. The nursing staff is largely good. The PCAs are terrible. They are some of the rudest, most dismissive, most condescending group of employees you will ever find at an inpatient psychiatric facility. They frequently would ignore quite hours by being loud themselves and would not enforce those rules when broken by other patients. Sleep was hard to come by for my 5 days. There was supposed to be gym time as well each day and out of my 5 days only 1 of those they took patients to the gym, which is apparently in disrepair. I was not woken up for the gym time that did occur. So there was no physical activity beyond pacing. If you are trans like I am, request another facility. My deadname was frequently spoken aloud and put on the white board for all the patients to see. My actual name was put in quotation marks " " not even parentheses ( ) which would have been marginally more respectful. Just getting an electric razor was a hassle until I got in touch with the patient advocate. I came away having gotten what I needed from that place but I never wanna go back. read more

IHad to share my experience here because it made me have faith in the ancient proverb "Angels Unawares". My soulmate/fiance/love of my life passed away suddenly right before Christmas. I found him deceased in our newly purchased dream home and I promptly had a complete cinematic-style nervous breakdown (think of the Kubrick film "The Shining" when the camera zooms in on the vignette with the man in the bathroom and the odd rabbit-headed figure. Well, envision that camera zoom effect but inverse. I was so disassociated after/while seeing the body of my beloved lying there clearly deceased that I became immediately in such acute shock and disassociation that I was no longer among the sentient. I didn't feel alive, human, or capable of any logical thought, in effect, I had become a catatonic silent nonentity. The closest I can relate is those WW1-era photos of a poor frontline trench soldier with those million-yard stare eyes and an expression that speaks to sheer unvocable terror. I had gone as far as I fathom any human can go to literally "cracking up" without permanently losing it). So after LEO and the ME came and took my beloved- (by the way LEO And the ME thank you so much, you were all so comforting and kind. Another win for me as a person who loves law enforcement and first responders, thank you for being there for me at the most difficult moment in my life, bless you all!) ...I instantly was lying on the floor of the room I found him wrapping me in the shroud that covered his body they left and contemplating ending it all, after a day of this I knew if I didn't ask for help I would not make it. Thus I called my beloved friend who happens to be a PsyD and asked her to please take me to the psychiatric hospital as I needed professional help ASAP. My dear friend Dr____ took me to Highland Springs, I remember walking through the doors to the inpatient ward feeling not afraid, but curious and proud of my inner resolve for asking for and accepting the care I could not and was not currently capable of providing for myself. From the intake process, the search process, and the body check to the first moments on the unit and each day after- I could not in my wildest dreams create a more loving, holistic, and patient-orientated medical facility for psych crisis. Highland Springs is the facility that hundreds of inpatient hospitals for mental care could learn from. The staff at HS truly are benevolent, give a damn and humanize each patient in their care. I was blown away by the level of attention, warmth, and even sisterly/motherly love and genuine affection I was given by the staff. The individuals who made an immense difference in my stay and I still think of near-daily as major figures in my ability to grow and regain my mental power are as follows. I give HS 10/10 Tia the PA in my unit was unbelievably amazing, Each night of her shift that I was there Tia would come into my room sit on the edge of my bed, and tell me she loves me, believe in me, and that I I going to make it/be okay. Tia reassured me that my deceased partner loves and is proud of me for taking the steps to heal. I am eternally blessed to have such a pathos devoted sisterly figure who showed me nothing but selfless compassion and was genuine in her sisterly care and empathy for me. Deborah and Donald in the lunch/dinner/cafeteria- what incredible gregarious human beings they are! Also, the gorgeously pretty younger gal in the cafe would make me extra special vegetarian wraps with humous and tons of fresh veggies every night for a snack! Everyone else got PBJ or meat sandwiches but because I am a lifelong vegetarian this amazing beautiful lady I am embarrassed to admit I forgot her name-but shes was easily the prettiest employee at HS and would go out of her way to make me something that I could eat and showed me again a small to some but immensely impactful and appreciated act of love in making these wraps just for me : ) RN Renne was also a blessing, she was of the midwest OG type, a lot of patients called her a bitch- but don't believe that Rennee just doesn't tolerate disrespect or rude behavior, If you are not a loser miscreant you will have no issues, I adore Renne and her perky yet realist outlook on life and the smile and little jokes and witticisms she had for me always cheered me up. Also Nurse Ziggy is amazing, and Misty the PA both gorgeous human being, the day I did my intake and admission Misty called me " her full of life girl" and continued referring to me as such which as a widow hearing her always making uplifting remarks and showing she believed in my healing and success made huge inroads in my healing at HS. I also can't forget PA Angie, another pathos-ruled loving rockstar of a mental health professional. The staff here is out of this world amazing and excel at their jobs, read more

In-patient care was acceptable, and food service was fair, but aftercare was poor. I submitted short-term disability paperwork after I was released, but it was not completed. Highland Springs had two weeks to complete the paperwork. My provider contacted them a few times and faxed the paperwork. I contacted them a couple of times but received no response to the first call. The second time no one knew who my call should be directed to and they said they'd get back with me. I have lost out on three weeks of pay for this incompetence. read more

There is only one hour per week for visitors, therefore you are trapped. One woman did not receive her insulin for 24 hours! They actually ran out of food and served us cold English Muffins that had not been cooked. They never clean the bathrooms and my friend actually developed a serious respiratory infection there because it was so cold. They had ran out of blankets and would only allow us two blankets. read more

The worst place ever. I was refused services by a doctor I was assigned too. Yet dumped me on NP I did not feel comfortable with. He kept me 7 days inpatient against my will. I checked myself in for 5 days only. Medical "so called doctor " who never met me filed 5 pages report on my health assessment?!. This kind of fraud was too much. I reported him to Ohio medical board and stripped him out of his medical license. Experienced and witnessed terrible patient neglect and abuse. Even filed police report for them committing involuntary imprisonment of patients like me who revoked treatment authorization, yet were held against our will. They better be shut down! read more

Upon coming to facility I was worried bc some of the negative reviews.. I had never had been to a treatment facility, I was scared. I am here here to tell you this facility is amazing! The paperwork woman in the beginning was the only even slight issue she was giving me a attitude bc I was in fact reading what I was signing. But once I was walked to my floor every single nurse/ aide/therapist/ social worker everyone was honestly there to help me. Never once did I feel neglected or that any of my needs were not met. The Food was absolutely amazing also.. chicken and waffles one morning for breakfast! All meals were very good. The groups were great, they had several a day. Also every single morning you meet with your therapist who is truly wonderful and cares about your treatment. I will always be thankful for my experience here. Also very clean. RUN! I was on the phone with my son, heard someone say " You need to shut the F$&@ up! and go sit the F$&@ down over there!". I stopped our conversation and asked him if that was a nurse, he became very quiet and my son responded in one word...."yes". I do not live near him and had done all the work I did to help them and my son from hours away. I have never had to deal with such nasty people, my son was taken there. I called within 24 hours of his intake giving them all the information to get him into another facility. They dragged there feet and didn't get the any paperwork turned in, in time they took over 12 days to get it in to them, and so he was approved but bc they didn't to it in a timely manner, I was called by the doctor of this place and in the nicest way possible was told O'well, he will be dropped off at a shelter, we will not be keeping him for the couple days he needs to get into the other facility, they will be dropping him off at a shelter and wishing him well. I was sent here against my will in December of 2020. I still have nightmares about it. Many of the nurses and some of the other staff are extremely kind and try to help but they have no ability to change anything as upper management is completely corrupt. They lie and tell you a shorter time of stay until they see how much they can milk your insurance for. "3-5 days" turned into 2 weeks for me. The psychiatrists, specifically Neera Gupta, reminded me of the doctor from the movie Requiem for a Dream, barely looking me in the face while I was talking and just prescribing medication on top of medication instead of trying to find the root of the problem. Some of these medications left me with severe anxiety which I struggle with to this day although I've been off them for almost 2 years. Many of my family members and friends tried calling to speak with me and were denied this basic request. When I got out I was told that they had left many messages for me with the staff, none of which were relayed. It is impossible to sleep as they won't allow you to close the door of your bedroom and the lights from the the window in the parking lot are extremely bright (the blinds don't close). We were told that I would be able to receive visitors - another lie. I was completely cut off from the rest of the world in every way possible. They make the lobby and any part of the building that is visible to family dropping off patients look nice and presentable but the rest of the facility is cold, sterile and very unwelcoming. I left this place much more emotionally and mentally ill than when I had arrived. Please think long and hard, and read the reviews on here before sending a loved one to this facility. read more

My experience at Highland Springs in-patient facility was extremely traumatic. Before I voluntarily went to the facility, I talked with a staff member several times asking very thorough questions. Questions about my rights as a patient, how long my stay would be, etc. After I got the courage to go and share my story with complete strangers, everything they had told me was a complete lie. I was not allowed to leave the facility. The decision was made for me by a doctor who I didn't even get a chance to talk to. Every person I told my story to, it was twisted. Details were added that were absolutely not true. I was put in the addiction and detox unit; I should have been in the mental health unit for anxiety and depression. During my 6 day stay (I was told it would only be 3 days...), I spent a total of 10 minutes with a doctor / nurse practitioner. Both of these individuals were extremely cold and clearly not trained in trauma-informed care. The majority of the staff treated us as inmates. My requests were ignored, and my opinions demeaned. I have been out for almost two weeks now, and I am still recovering and having nightmares. The therapy I received at Highland Springs, I could have taught. The therapists professed they would advocate for us patients, but I never saw that come through. Messages and items that were sent/left for me never made it to my hands. During my stay I witnessed disrespect for patients with trauma, homophobia and transphobia, disregard for patients rights, and lack of communication to patient's mental health professionals. Please do not send your loved ones / clients / self to this facility! There are other hospitals and outpatient programs that will embrace and support you in healthy ways. read more

So far my brother is here one day He was talking to a trusted therapist and they sent him here he went thinking he was gonna get the help he needed instead they are treating him as if he is crazy, my brother isn't crazy we are now trying to take him out of here If anything don't send your loved one here ever. This will be the most Accurate & Fair Review of this faculty at least during my stay there You really don't see a doctor, most never see a Doctor & only see the Nurse Practitioner briefly who doesn't do anything or change anything to help your stay & just does the same blueprint for everyone & they don't answer questions... this place will most likely keep you the maximum time just to max out there $900 a day they get per patient, They allow Patient Smoking but just know you only get a few smoke breaks a day as marked on daily schedule 7:15am , 9:45am, 1:00, 3:30pm,, 7:15pm, 9:30pm, my Time there the weather was cold so most PCA staff would find reasons & ways to either Make u wait past time or try to find a way to avoid the break which leads to many patients being agitated as it's one freedom they do get Hit or Miss Nurses PCA's PRO's: --Food imo was good , & you get as much as you would like, Caffeteria Has Fountain Drinks & Pop, Coffee, Juice & you never have to worry about being hungry there as they are never stingy on food & also have snacks & sandwiches in fridges in the dorm --Socializing & making connections with other patients & people also going through something & sharing Struggle together & there to help & support eachother & the camaraderie of patients at least during my stay -- Freedom to operate your time in there as you please The Groups are actually very good and beneficial & they make your day go by faster & better as well -- My experience the environment makes you build tight connections with your fellow patients as it's a very strong bonding experience to go through together --The daily Schedule helped you program & plan day out & keep busy, only negative were things tht were always on schedule but would never happen such as one morning group, Gym Time & any evening group after Dinner --Anytime you were lucky enough to have a compassionate Staffer especially a PCA for example Angie was tremendous & treated us like fellow humans instead of Lower level inmates tht aren't on the same level of a human as the staff lol --The Activity Groups such as Music Therapy is always nice to go to as well as the groups ran by social workers Curtis & Brittany --A+++++ Social Workers Curtis & Brittany are Amazing -- The Rooms were not bad, I hated the showers as it was impossible not to get water running out all over the floor especially in my room (I was lucky enough to get the Presidential suite aka the Big Handicap room but shower was roll in wheelchair accessible so shower floor even with normal Floor -- Access to a Washer and dryer & being able to wash & dry clothes so you didn't have to be in a gown & feel more like a Patient etc. --Access to the cordless phones & unless busy you could talk for however long you needed as long as you weren't keeping people from it (always be respectful in tht way) --The Smoke breaks & ability to smoke as they said most facilities don't offer that at all Cons -No real interaction or meeting with a Doctor - Nurses are basically the pharmacist so it's not really like talking to normal Nurse -Too many Rude Staff members , one is to be expected but there were several , don't get it wrong there are some Top notch Nice Staffers as well & they make it all tht much better to interact with them -PCA (Desk) is a little Lazy, you most of the time never get any phone messages left to them from Family & if you do it's at the earliest several hours later - It often Feels like you are an inmate & the Staff is the CO's , since many Staffers just there for a check & have a look of disdain for patients , & they just get in tht rhythm, & it's awful when u have a staffer who loves to flex power & power trip & make things miserable -- pointless Repetitive questions you had to answer multiple times a day tht were the exact same questionnaire having to repeatedly answer it during morning interaction, Med Passes & anyone lucky enough to have a one on one meeting with staff or anytime u went to med window (nurse station which is basically the pharmacists) -- -It's so difficult to sleep as new environment, not the most comfortable bed, & PCA coming to do count every 30min all throughout night as well as 2-3 blood pressure checks for some read more

I was referred to Highland Springs by my therapist at the Cleveland Rape Crisis Center because I've been on the edge of suicide. It took three to four days to get close to someone actually returning my calls even though I kept trying and trying. Finally, a scheduler phoned at 8:17a when I'd specifically asked to be called after 1:00p. I could cope with that, but when I tried to explain that I'm severely disabled to the point where it now takes four hours or so to get up and dressed, after which I'm exhausted, I wasn't believed. It is because physical mobility is so difficult that I requested a virtual or phone assessment. This MAN, (I'd very specifically requested a woman), thought he knew my body and its dysfunction better than I did even though I've lived in it for 59 years. He's never met me, seen medical record the first and was generally an ableist jerk. I hung up on him. After some tears of utter humiliation, I called back and spoke to a supervisor. Talk about not being heard! She was worse than the ableist man for whom she made all kinds of completely invalid excuses. It should NOT be this difficult to get help. I did my part. I held on through the weekend by my fingertips. Actually CHOOSING to become an in-patient so I can get my depression and anxiety stabilized is very unlike me. I was and am in emotional turmoil and these so-called professionals made everything much worse. I have less than zero faith in them to treat a pet hamster, much less a complex human. If you have a significant disability STAY FAR, FAR AWAY‼ Did I mention that disabled people should ambulate as quickly as you possibly can AWAY from these ableist individuals? Well, I'm reiterating the warning. If I could do so 100 times more, I would. Bad place! read more

This place is just in it for the money from insurance. Son was admitted on a Thursday today is Sunday has spoken to a psychologist for less than five minutes. High winds have downed power to the center on generator power with no hot water, no staff due to call offs and food is spars. We have set up help some place else and they will not release our son per their policy. I wouldn't take anyone there. read more

Horrible. Was suicidal and have anxiety disorder. Went for a group outpatient program, dr ignored me upon introduction, then when I asked what her name was she refused to tell me. Said the word 'shitty' while telling a story and she pressed a button on her lanyard for another nurse to come escort me out into the hall for 'being inappropriate'. Told me Im not allowed to use such language and that I 'need to control myself'. I said I'm sorry but we're all adults here and I wasn't meaning to offend anyone. Felt like if I swore again I would get locked up so I left during lunch break. The courage it took for me to even go there to be ignored and have them act like I was unstable or a threat just for saying Ive been feeling 'shitty' lately, put me off trying to help myself at all. read more

It's impossible to make an appointment here without it being changed without consent or providers switched again without consent. Apparently they believe that a person needs numerous phone calls, emails and texts to schedule an appointment. Also the appointment changes from in person to tele health also without the patient's knowledge. They just say they are having trouble with their automated system. I do not recommend this place. Beware of Nurse Ratchett in the Cedars unit! She made me take a bath in ice cold water because she didn't want to take me to a bathroom that had working hot water, she laughed at how much I was shaking uncontrollably. I was also assaulted by a patient that attempted to assault me the first night, they didn't keep her away from me and didn't put me in another unit as promised. The actual doctors might spend 5 minutes with you every few days if you're lucky. All they care about is the insurance money, not the patients. read more

Highland Springs is a wonderful place! I was recently discharged after having spent three weeks in their partial hospitalization program (PHP). The staff were sincere and caring concerning my diagnosis, in my case depression and crippling anxiety. My main counselor, Chloe, did a great job in giving myself and the other patients in our group coping skills for when things get tough and you're feeling the blues. Even the receptionist was a nice welcoming face each morning. Highland Springs made me feeling more comfortable in knowing that I'm not the only human with some mental health problems. It is nice being around people in therapy (this is coming from a reclusive and at times antisocial person) who understand you. I'm happy I got to know the other patients and staff and would recommend this facility to anybody. read more

The only good thing about this place is the food and a very small percentage of the staff were good. I was assaulted by a staff member in the middle of the night. I called the police, but nothing other a report was done. I had to threaten legal action to get a copy of my medical records. read more

What can I say. The WORST mental health facility I have ever seen. The "doctors" that saw my friend are QUACKS !!!. I took her there TWICE with addiction, detox and suicidal thoughts. I BEGGED them to hold her until she was past the worst of it. NOPE !!! they let her go AMA TWICE. Don't worry that when she came in the second time she was puking and crying and hearing things. She is now in the HOSPITAL after a suicide attempt after getting severely hurt by a scumbag the day you aholes let her go. They tried to release patients well before they are actually better! my friend was able to call from the facility threatening to still kill someone and they were trying to release him the very next day. I called up there and expressed that he was calling from the facility they relayed no messages to the doctors! Very Little to no concern for the patient or the people they can harm unstable! All this place cares about is the money and not caring for their patients!!!! We brought our daughter in to be evaluated for outpatient group therapy, which is what she was seeking for her anxiety and some depression. Next thing you know they are locking her up and telling her she needs to sign herself in voluntarily or she will be pink slipped. This was the most traumatizing experience for her. During her 3 day stay she learned from other patients that the same thing happened to them and a nurse said "this is happening all the time anymore". On her first night she was hysterical and scared and there were no counseling techniques in place. All they did was ask her if she wanted medications. Dr. Bell was her primary psychiatrist while she was there. He only met with her each morning for maybe 3 minutes and only offered medication as a treatment option. He was in no rush to get her out even though she was traumatized from being there and wrongfully placed. She was being held against her will. He told her to write a 72 hour letter and this may help facilitate her release. After she did this, they flagged her as an RTU (Restricted To Unit) patient. This meant she could not go outside for fresh air or go to the cafeteria to eat with everyone else. We asked to speak to Dr. Bell multiple times and he refused to call or meet with us. There were no individual therapy sessions or opportunities to talk through emotions. There was only generic group therapy where they played jeopardy and were told not to talk about the deep stressors they were having. There is no support here at all, when other patients were having panic attacks the only people trying to calm them down were other fellow patients. The only thing the nurses and doctors offered were more medications and never once sat down to talk to a struggling patient to try and calm them down. No proper therapy, coping techniques or support was shown to these patients. All this place cares about is pink slipping people so they can get their money and throwing patients on medications to get them "stable". As I was fighting to get my daughter out, Highland Springs kept calling me to bother me about the cost and the insurance coverage. My entire family has been traumatically affected by this experience. After days of stressing, fighting and hiring lawyers, our daughter was finally released. Because of her time here, she is now more emotionally traumatized and the most mentally distressed she has ever been. read more

I wouldn't send my worst enemy to this facility. They don't listen to the concerns of the patients they just keep pushing them through. They also call and leave threatening messages for the patients if they don't go to meetings that they were never told about in the first place. I would look long and hard for a better facility then this one. read more

Sadly when it comes to Highland Springs Hospital, there is so much you need to know and understand before agreeing to their services. I could sadly write a book however most recently, my wife asked me to go into Impaitent services to Highland Spring due to my PTSD. On April 23rd I was brutally assaulted by another patient. I was addmitted on April 20th , in that time I made it clear multiple times I did not feel safe due to this patient. Includeing adding that to a police report I sadly had to resort too while I was in their care. Come to find out from my wife , the hospital claimed that I never told anyone about my concerns. Which I find extremely disturbing and perplexing. There are a very few staff members at Highland Springs who deserve and should even work there, sadly the rest either fall into the " dont care " or the " power trip " categories. Highland Spring truly should not be able to renew there lisence to treat and provide Psychiatric services which is due October 22 2019. Highland Springs did in fact at one point was a safe and supportive place of treatment. Sadly those times have long since passed. Please remeber the following before you decide to choose Highland Springs: *They are a Hospital and survive on insuranse money. You very well find yourself in care much longer then needed, Soley due to maxing out a insurance plan. You may also find yourself released from services much ealier then you need simply because of insurance coverage. * you need to read EVERYTHING YOU ARE GIVEN VERY CAREFULLY via paperwork and forms. The Ohio Paitent Bill of Rights is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. Do not just sign at everything they put in front of you , If you dont understand something they legally must explaine or provide assistance in understanding everything they want you to sign. * You are a person seeking help , Not a problem to solved. You may find yourself in a situation while under care of Highland Springs when staff members are ignoring you or your needs. Do not in any circumstance stand for that sort of treatment. Especially bullying from staff or the increased use of intimidation from staff. * Nightime staff has a bad habbit of once everyone is sleep, of discussing paitent's private info along with laughing and joking about patients. Along with Being EXTREMELY loud. Please be aware that if you want sleep you may want to bring your own ear plugs. * I have personally witnessed all to many times Highland Spings manipulate Family's and The patients themselves. The " say one thing , However turn around and do the complete oppisite". * before you agree to services , if you are capable please ensure you have Advacte for your care outside the Hospital. You most likley will find yourself in great need of them. Sadly I wish Highland Springs would go back to there days of Healing and service driven.
