I'm so glad newsstands like this still exist, as you can't always get EVERY periodical you're looking for at a grocery store and not even a bookstore. Borders used to have a wider selection than Barnes & Noble, but unfortunately Borders is now out of business. It was fascinating to see that this business had the infamous Charlie Hebdo for sale ($12 each), as the owner, who was quite friendly, told me they had ordered 200+ copies of it. This is definitely an item for collectors who enjoy historical front pages and such. This edition of the magazine, as you know, lead to the recent newsroom massacre in Paris, France. There were a ton of magazines for sale, and I went in to purchase the annual Hollywood issue of Vanity Fair. Even though this is a very mainstream magazine, I sometimes have a hard time finding this issue every year at grocery stores. I saw the reviews and I had to put down my own perspective since I used to get the NY times from here but with the economy, I will be discontinuing my subscription (weekend only). This is a typical Newstand that has the variety of mags, foreign newspaper, more specifically focused types like for film, fashion, even the political rags and your std local newspapers. They also sell candy, ice cream popsicles etc during the summer (although I would check dates on those before purchase). The place has been useful at times and worthless at others. They also sell lottery tickets if you are inclined without having to go to your local liquor store or grocery. Overall, its there when you need it but its not as big as you normally associate with newstands and how they survive is a mystery to me. And if you are buying foreign magazines because you checked it out and looked good (check the dates too) the prices are at a premium. read more

On the awning, above the door, it advertises the "New York Times" Newspaper, and yet when you go in there is no such paper for sale, they don't carry it! Only two newspaper are for sale here, USA TODAY and the UT. Never seen a "News Stand" without more than two newspapers. What a waste of space. Given the World Wide Web, hard to believe these folks are still in business. A REAL newsstand, with an absolute abundance of periodicals and literature and magazines, newspapers, etc, (INCLUDING both the L.A. and New York Times) exists on the corner of University and 30th street, go there. Better to convert this location to a much needed Donut Shop. They would do much better. read more

The hours of operation listed on the Internet or 8:00AM every day it's now 8:22am and the place is completely locked up and dark. It's clearly in business. I don't know whether their hours are based upon the Saturday shift person's recovery from last nights hangover or?. This newsstand is just complete and satisfies my newspaper and mag reading needs. The publications selection is huge and well organized, so you don't waste any time grabbing your favorite read. There isn't a publication you can't find at this place. You can buy rare magazines here that I don't imagine Barnes and Noble sells. From foreign magazines, to the rinky dinky design magazines, Hillcrest Newsstand has it all ... and porn too! Lots of it. There are some kinky DVDs there, but I was too busy gawky at the latest issue of Vanity Fair with a pic of a shirtless Brad Pitt on the cover to peruse the porn selection. However, I managed to check out a majority of the material without getting harassed by the staff. I did so much reading there, I skipped on buying a magazine all together, but I did plan on purchasing a couple packs of gum. That is, until they rung up as $1.50 each. Oh well, I lest I got to fawn over BP for free. read more

This newsstand is such a disappointment. I live in North Park and went to Paras Newsstand (sadly now closed) every Sunday for the New York Times. Last week I pre-paid for the Sunday Times, for the month of March, at Hillcrest Newsstand. I confirmed with the owner at the time the Sunday hours. He indicated Sunday closing at 2-3pm. Today I arrived at 1:20 to pick up my reserved paper to find the shop closed. About 1/2 hour later I called to let them know I would be in on Monday to get my copy. I was expecting to leave a voicemail message but to my surprise the owner answered the phone. He stated they were open. I arrived at the newsstand 5 minutes later and asked again about Sunday hours explaining my surprise at their closure earlier. He said he was out to lunch (clearly). I said if there had just been a note on the door stating "back at ____time" that would have been helpful. He got very nasty saying "I make almost nothing on these papers". Really is that my fault?? At that point I cancelled my prepaid paper. The manager/owner is so nasty he should just give it up and close up shop. Do Not Patronize this newsstand. They do not deserve your business. read more

I understand that everything media related can be found online but there is something to be said when you go old-school and actually venture out of the house head to your local newsstand grab your favorite magazine, newspaper, drink and just engage in conversation with the shop owner. This is my one stop shop to buy lottery tickets that's how I know for a fact if you shopped here you would receive the same great friendly customer service that I've had the benefit of receiving. The shop owner is so well-versed in customer service he knows when to engage customers, when to leave them alone to browse the enormous wall of magazines covering every imaginable topic in the world and when to just listen and hear what you have to say about your own life. Best kept secret in town. I go here for Art, Photography, Literary magazines and I'm always pleasantly surprised at the diversity of thought and images that reside here. If we don't use this store it will go away and it's unique in San Diego. read more

This is one of two decent news stands in San Diego right now. That said, although the staff don't bother you, they also don't seem like they really want customers. And the constant smell of smoking in the back alley - it comes right through the entire shop - makes me feel like I'm in the smoker's section in an alley. I don't go here much anymore unless I know what I'm looking for and I'm in and out fast so I don't have to smell the cigarette smoke. read more
