Selling the infamous Charlie Hebdo. Would be good for collectors
    Peijean T.

I'm so glad newsstands like this still exist, as you can't always get EVERY periodical you're looking for at a grocery store and not even a bookstore. Borders used to have a wider selection than Barnes & Noble, but unfortunately Borders is now out of business. It was fascinating to see that this business had the infamous Charlie Hebdo for sale ($12 each), as the owner, who was quite friendly, told me they had ordered 200+ copies of it. This is definitely an item for collectors who enjoy historical front pages and such. This edition of the magazine, as you know, lead to the recent newsroom massacre in Paris, France. There were a ton of magazines for sale, and I went in to purchase the annual Hollywood issue of Vanity Fair. Even though this is a very mainstream magazine, I sometimes have a hard time finding this issue every year at grocery stores. When I popped in to Hillcrest Newsstand it was right there, quick and easy to find!

I was able to find a Wall Street Journal. The owner was pleasant and professional. I will return.

While waiting properly behind the designated line sign to purchase an item, an aggressive male customer began crowding and verbally harassing me to move up past the boundary. When I directly asked the cashier on duty to enforce the store's line policy, she explicitly agreed with me that customers are supposed to wait behind the sign, but then followed it up with, "Yes, but it's okay." It is absolutely not "okay" for a boutique toy store in San Diego to permit a grown man to harass a woman shopping alone. By refusing to enforce basic civility and line boundaries, your staff actively validated hostile behavior over a sensory toy. When I contacted corporate regarding this incident, I received a completely generic, automated brush-off stating they hope I "visit again soon," completely ignoring the safety breakdown that occurred under their watch. Allowing this type of unchecked aggression to slide in a toy store where families and children shop is incredibly dangerous. This total lack of accountability and failure to expect basic respect from adults is exactly what escalates into full-on physical brawls over merchandise. I now actively dread going to this location because management refuses to hold disruptive adults accountable. I am putting this on the public record now, and when a major escalation inevitably happens here because staff refuses to maintain basic order in the NeeDoh line, I will be back to update this review. Shop elsewhere if you value a safe, respectful environment.

What a nice independent bookstore! I can't tell you the last time I held a book in my hands (I…read moreknow! I kind of suck!), but I do love books and try to shop at them whenever I can. I love to give books or gift cards to bookstores to children. Bluestocking Books is the kind of bookstore I would specifically go out of my way to buy gifts for people, or to (gasp) buy a book for myself. There are little cozy nooks around the bookstore, as there should be in a bookstore. There's also a section for kids, with a little table and some reading material to peruse. Inexplicably, Bluestocking Books is closed on Wednesdays! What an interesting day to be closed, but I guess you have to be closed at least one day, right? Why not Wednesday? The people who work here are very friendly and helpful, and there's just a palpable welcoming vibe emanating from the store. It's a nice place to browse and find the perfect book.
