I'm a senior. And Afro-American I had an encounter with the Jose, whom I believe to be the instructor. First of all he charges me $60.00 for a color. Which I paid. I brought it to his attention that I was a senior. He got a little upset and asked me for my ID, which I knew he would ask me for it. I noticed his temper change. He gave me to a student and walk away. With an attitude.. I ask him he was upset about the money? I will give it to you in a tip I explain. This student had never done color before. And he wasn't assisting her. My gut said to leave. I ask for my money back. I explained myself. Jose was so disrespectful to me he open the door for me to leave like I had done something wrong . Do not go here they will destroy your hair and let you leave looking like a butchered animal. I asked for a mullet which I had already just need to be reshaped. I had the instructor cutting my hair and mid way through left to help another student with a client for 30mins came back to me and complete forgot what cut I was getting. She began to rush cutting my hair because I think she wanted to go to lunch. She shouldnt have taken so long cutting another stylist client. She cut the back of my head so short and completely didn't even touch the top. It was like she was afraid to go short on the top. The buzz on each side were completely uneven, one side faded the other not and she didn't not clean up the back of the neck or around the ears. This is supposed to be one of the instructors? The best decision I ever made was choosing to go to Hilltop Beauty School. First the staff. Every single teacher, office administrator, and teacher aid at Hilltop beauty school is amazing! They really know what they're doing when it comes to preparing you for the state board test. Everyone is so humble and kind. I have never walked in without being greeted by a smile and a "Good morning!" or "How are you?". There is no such thing as a stupid question at this school and ALL the staff seriously goes above and beyond if you ever need anything. Any time I was out of something or forgot something the teachers and staff were more than happy to help! If you want to go to a school where no judgments or mean comments are tolerated, just chill vibes, this is the school for you! Second the curriculum. I was so terrified to take my state board test, I am terrible at test taking in general lol. I now feel so confident going into the practical and written test. The teachers will prepare you for the test if it's the last thing they do! Once your a Junior/Senior every week there is practice tests for the practical and written exams, this is the best thing for anyone who is bad at test taking like me. Bro! This is strictly based on my and my mother's experience there. First, the front desk woman had an attitude for no reason. If you want to take your bad day out on me, sure, ok. But my elderly mother? Who greets everyone with a friendly smile? Nah, -24 stars JUST for that! Second, this may be on us. You can go to the school for a discounted haircut, wash, etc... but if you have a hair type that isn't 1a to 2c don't even bother. They ruined my mother's curls and up charged her as they went. She paid for a wash and cut. Her hair was already super short, why did they feel the need to straighten her hair and then not bring back the curls? Beyond me. They left her with an embarrassing haircut. Me? I already knew when the stylist saw me at the front, and her eyes nearly popped out of her head that this wasn't the move. So I speak Spanish, I don't "look it" but when the stylist was asking around what should she do????? Baaaaaaby, i said no ma'am, no ham, no turkey! You will not touch my hair! The school needs to invest in teachers who can show their students how to deal with kinky, curly hair! Not, how to manipulate the hair into a form they know how to work with and then leave it there! Came here as a last resort I was in need of a haircut really bad. The woman who helped me I think her name was Vivian. being that she didn't really know exactly what to do she still tried and the instructor also showed her which is always helpful when learning. I came here as an already licensed stylist seeking to further my trade and add another certification under my belt because I want to give back what was given to me. I have been to a couple of other schools to try and receive this same training and what I have come to discover is that the staff at these other schools are disrespectful racist and egotistical. NOT HERE!!!! From the first day I signed up they were warm and inviting, enthusiastic respectable and caring you can hear it when they sign you up that they're not just out to take your money or throw student loans down your throat like most schools in the Bay Area do. I have been surrounded by great staff great knowledgeable staff I have been surrounded by students who are shy in their own nature but willing to learn from each other and the staff provided it's a homey atmosphere and they mean that the motto is "family" that is exactly what they mean I can go and come back and not feel judged or thought about differently when I walk through those doors. Ok, the negative review for this school is just racist. Let me straighten out a few points. The instruction is carried out according to an orderly curriculum. There's nothing haphazard about it. You go through a board approved textbook, and the focus is on practical skills and preparation for the board exam. Some classes have bilingual instruction. Bi means two. English and Spanish. You will not be lost, no matter which language is your first. If you have a problem with Spanish speakers learning cosmetology to better serve a Spanish speaking clientele... You picked the wrong state to live in! To recap: you will not be lost or confused, the instructors are VERY good about that. Other notes: everyone is very helpful and friendly. You will be encouraged to get your hands into practice mode from day one, there are no dumb questions, and there will always be a kind instructor by your side to get you up and running, no matter your level of experience. If you have kids, a job, family stuff, the schedule allows for some serious flexibility. And the financial aid is ROBUST. You CAN afford to go here. I'm loving my time here. I needed to retake my state board test (long story)and I needed to brush up after 40 years. My old school no longer exists and Hilltop was the only school to open their doors to me and support me every step of the way to pass both parts of my exam. I was assigned Ms. Esme, a beautiful and talented teacher, to help me prepare for the test. I was supported and encouraged by her and the other staff members and staff trainees as well. I got my license back but I certainly would have never been able to do it alone. This place isn't quite as pristine, hip or sanitary as where I'd normally get my nails done or my hair cut at, but it's a FRACTION of the cost, and just down the street. $7 haircut (without blow-dry) $12 pedicure It was by no means speedy, but my beautician-in-training spoke absolutely no English whatsoever. The haircut was slow, but at least she stopped every now and then to ask a question her fellow students. I'll admit I was a little nervous, but the cut turned out alright, nothing spectacular. I was in full understanding when I came here that they are students and they are not as perfect as a hair stylist can be so I let them trim my hair. Note: I had a Fauxhawk About a quarter done i noticed that it was crooked already but I still let them work on it. Then I started telling them that they are not doing it right so the teacher saw my face so she grab the scissors and comb from the student and started speaking Spanish. But then she grabbed the electric shaver and started shaving the back if my head. Right there and then I ask her to stop and said that I had enough so I said its ok then left. They don't even know how to blow dry properly and when I go to an actual salon, I don't have heat damage. First of all, I am so happy I found this school! This is the best beauty school around. I am satisfied so far in my program. I found Hilltop online when I was looking up what school I would want to go to. I dropped by to take a tour and they explained thy have been here for over 50 years?! What?? How did I not know this? By the time the tour was done, I knew I was ready to enroll. The teachers are awesome. They help you however they can and are so patient. This school is huge. From the outside it doesn't look so big, but once you enter inside there is so much space. From what I have observed, this school truly cares about us (the student body). No matter what they have supported me to make sure I reach my goal. And I am impressed with the bilingual program offered here. I am Latina, so for me I love that Hilltop empowers the latino/hispanic community. I am learning so much and I feel confident about my education so far. I have fun in my classes. They have State Board practice classes every Thursday, and I already feel prepared to go take my state exam for my Cosmetology license. I cannot emphasize how much I adore Hilltop Beauty School.
