Hilltop Country Store is not just a charming store you pass on a country road. Hilltop is worthy of adding to your navigation as a destination. I've seen posts on social media about Hilltop but since we don't live in the vicinity it took us a while to make it over there. We've been missing out on one of the best hidden gems in the area. You are greeted by smiles from the owners upon entry. The store has several coolers and shelves of various snacks and beverages. They also offer deli items. But the BEST part of a visit to Hilltop is freshly made savory southern staples prepared to order. The menu is vast, as are their portions!! We had heard rave reviews about their Shrimp Po Boy and the Fried Green Tomatoes. We ordered those as well as a Chicken Philly Sandwich. Hand to God, the fried green tomatoes were the best I've ever had. Even my husband who's indifferent to a FGT declared them the best and worthy of a trip back out to eat them again. That was high praise from a typical carnivore. The Po Boy was massive. I couldn't eat more than half. The "side" of FGT was enough for a meal. The chicken a Philly meat was minced so finely that every bite was a perfect blend of meat, cheese, and bread. While not a typical "restaurant", there is a charming covered outdoor patio with several picnic tables at which to dine, and kids toys to keep the young ones busy while you eat. Honestly, the only thing missing is a big fat recliner to take a nap in after you hit your carb coma. We were too full for a dessert, but the cake selection was beautiful and offered by the slice. The family owned ambiance is evident by the number of "regulars" that popped in while we were there. In a time where people are rushed and non conversational, Hilltop is like walking back in time to visit an old friend. It's 100% worth a drive out to Hilltop. I can't wait to go back! I ordered a fish sandwich with house made tartar sauce, onion and lettuce. It was delicious and huge! I also had the fried okra that I scarfed before arriving in Monticello. There were so many delicious things on the menu. I had a piece of carrot cake to go too! Next time, I know I'll order a lunch and just sit outside on the picnic table. After seeing many posts about the Hilltop Country Store, my husband and I decided to take a drive and eat lunch there today. We were not disappointed. The rustic surroundings, super friendly owner and staff and yummy food were certainly worth the trip. Today's special was a gyro. My husband ordered and enjoyed it. We stopped at the Hilltop Country store yesterday, and found this gem in a somewhat remote area. It's a country store, but in the back, you can order food at the counter and then pay at the front. They had a wide array of food options from chicken salad, egg salad to hot wings to sandwiches/subs to green beans/collard greens and more. They told me they were known for their chicken salad so I ordered the 12oz chicken salad, green beans and fried green tomatoes. All were very good. It was raining, and their was no real place to eat inside so I ate in the car. There isn't much around this area, but the Hilltop is a great find. Check it out! read more

We stopped on the way home? The country fried steak sandwich was awesome, my wife's shrimp porboy was incredible. The people were very friendly and accommodating. We sat out back on the picnic tables covered by rooftop! Real country!! We loved it. I did have a piece of pineapple banana bread cake after I couldn't finish my sandwich. The first time I tried Hilltop was about 4 years ago. I ordered a pork chop sandwich and their Mixed Box which is a combination of chicken livers and gizzards. The food was sublime so I couldn't wait to return. Only thing is......I never did. Until now. One day last week out of nowhere, the urge to get back to Hilltop surged through me. Can't explain it but I didn't fight it one bit. From where I live now, it's easily a 30 minute drive but I can't lie.......it's so worth it. I once again ordered a Mixed Box but tried their 1/4 pound cheeseburger. After all these years, the food was still magnificent. So much so that I told my Wife about it and took her this week for a lunch date. She loved 'em! Hilltop Country Store is a remarkable local business. Even during the pandemic, they remain busy. Their loyal customers line UP, just waiting to order and get their grub. I believe they're open from 11am-3pm Monday-Wednesday but 11am-8pm on the other days. After a 4 year sabbatical, I've now been two times in two weeks. I can guarantee you this much though.........I'll never let that much time pass in between visits again. read more

A welcome find out east of Tallahassee where there aren't many options. This hilltop store (thus the name) has been here forever although it's current incarnation is more food takeout than store. It is located on the corner of US 90E and FL 59. We stopped after a Sunday drive and tried their hamburgers and fries. I am an "all the way" burger guy so I'm no connoisseur of the burger patty since my hamburger love is for the combination taste. It didn't matter to me that the sort of star shaped patty had probably come from the freezer. I enjoyed the taste of my burger and would order it again. The fries were also good. They have an extensive menu of choices to satisfy almost anyone. They have a couple of deli cases filled with cake slices, cheesecake slices, deli salads and deviled eggs. I couldn't resist the looks of their apple cobbler cheesecake and I am always a sucker for deviled eggs so they were added to our fare and went home for consumption later. That cheesecake was so good whether it was a fork of apple cobbler or a fork of cheesecake or a fork of both. Presentation on a foam plate under plastic wrap may make you think twice about that $4.50 price tag, but don't let it stop you from enjoying this deliciousness. The deviled eggs are not your grandma's family reunion deviled eggs. There is a tangy and spicy taste to these that made me wish I had gotten 2 orders. I would stop at Hilltop anytime I was in the area just to get those deviled eggs. The majority of their business appears to be takeout, but they do provide a couple of covered picnic tables and a separate building with a few tables if you want to eat there. Both are out back. My only caution with this location would be about getting back on US 90. You are on a hilltop with minimal sight of traffic coming from either direction in a 55 mph zone. Look twice, get out quick and accelerate quickly for your own safety. read more

First time here and will be back. Had the country fried steak sandwich which was a pre-formed and pre-battered cubed steak item and served on a bun (see picture). Despite not being battered on location, it was served hot and the sandwich was built very well. The fries were also very crispy as they were cooked to order. Prices were very affordable. The entire staff was very nice and very accommodating. I was told at the register to try the cuban sandwich next time I am here, as it is their best item - and I will certainly do that. This place has been around since I was a little girl, it's very nostalgic for me to stop in now when I come back to Tallahassee . It's a very simple delicatessen, but they have fantastic egg salad sandwiches, and usually a variety of southern staples that you'd find made up that are great for lunch or dinner or a snack on the road while you're traveling. The food is good, the employees are fantastically friendly, the bathrooms are clean, and the scenery is lovely.  Whether you're in search of a hot home cooked meal, snacks or a cold drink, Hilltop's got you covered.  They are known for their chicken salad, said the waitress, but I chose the BBQ platter with a side of fried greet tomatoes. My hubz got the same but with baked beans.  For $7.99, I got a heaping portion of okay BBQ. Not the best but not the worst. My tomatoes were thinly sliced and deep fried in a thick and crispy batter. The homemade remmoulade is an orange tinted mayo-based dipping sauce with flecks of red tang.  We ate at one of the covered picnic tables outside then played with our dog in the adjacent grassy area. After our hike along Miccosukee Parkway we decided to give Hilltop Country Store a try. Boy I am glad we did even with a major storm and downpour. We were greeted with a good amount of people waiting for their orders....so right off it must be worth the wait. We went to order and shown 3 full menu boards to pick from. We were in the mood for some cold subs so the wife got an Italian and I got the fully loaded roast beef. Wow that was about the best roast beef sub I can remember eating and the wife's Italian was equally good. Definitely will be return visits to start working through the extensive menu. Hilltop Country Store has all the variety of a New York bodega with the charm, taste and quality of good old fashioned southern cooking. Featuring a wide range of food options from sandwiches to fried chicken to BBQ, an array of deserts and a small grocery store carrying drinks, toiletries, snacks, canned goods and other staples, this place is an excellent pit stop for any traveler. Unsure of what to order, the server behind the counter informed us that they proudly serve over 100 lbs of chicken every few days. I got the BBQ platter with a side of beans for 7.99 (the most expensive item on the menu). The BBQ was alright, nothing to write home about either way, I wish I went with the chicken. The pork was a bit dry, and the sauce was a generic vinegar based dressing with a nice tang. The beans were good and the fries came with a mayo based red dipping sauce that carried a bit of a pop. Sandwiches are in that $5.50-6.50 range and burgers will run you a smooth $4.00. Check out the desert cabinet for a nice meal topper or the refrigerated cabinet for fresh made potato and chicken salads as well as other cold served dishes. An outdoor seating area is a nice touch that makes Hilltop a great roadtrip layover if you happen to be driving through the Tallahassee area. read more

We were traveling West on I 10 and we were getting hungry. I checked Yelp and found the Hilltop Country Store recommended. We wanted something that wasn't a chain. It was a nice drive and close to the interstate. At lunch time there were several cars there which is always a good sign. Menus with so many choices with prices were displayed above the counter. I had a hard time deciding what I wanted. I ordered the chicken salad and was very pleased with how yummy it was. The husband ordered the egg salad sandwich and it was delicious. We stopped here to find out information on the farm next door and never expected to find a simple but great eating place. We took away an order of fried green tomatoes and 4 individual slices of different cakes. The fried green tomatoes were great and even better when cold. We tried the cherry cheesecake, lemon pound cake, carrot cake, and triple chocolate pie. All were homemade and absolutely delicious! The people were very helpful, patient, and friendly. It is a little old country store that reminds me of the small southern country store in my granny's tiny little town in western Florida.
