We were leaving the 16th & Vinton area, ready to head back home post grocery shopping, when a…read moremakeshift sign caught our eye. "Burritos. Tacos. Tamales. Enchiladas. Church at 15th & Hickory." Could it be? We had to follow. Years ago, I had heard of this illusive church basement where one could find the best tamales (and other delights) on Saturdays. My early attempts to find this magical place with the scrumptious tamales had always ended with failure. Now I understand why. Beginning in November(ish) and ending in May(ish), the folks at Templo Victoria are making and selling homemade tamales, tacos, burritos and enchiladas out of the basement to raise money for the church. Making it even more tricky is that fact that this magic making occurs every other Saturday during these months. So you can imagine...if you choose the wrong Saturday/month combination....well, you're driving around looking for something that exists...just not at that particular moment. Prices are $14/dozen of pretty much anything ($1.25 each). Cash only. Tamales are some of the BEST I've ever had - packed with flavor with just the right amount of moisture. The green salsa (complimentary) packs a punch and is super addictive. Everything freezes well (so stock up), except the tacos - which are fried - so not freezable. To help you with your calendaring: It's Saturday, February 21 and I'm on my way to the church basement to buy treats. Call ahead if you want to double check.

This is one of the, if not the, best church I've been to in Omaha. It looks more like a warehouse…read morethan a place of worship, but there's a warmth that the people inside add that overcomes the lack of aesthetics. It's a contemporary church, so the worship music is upbeat and features songs you hear on radio stations like K-Love and 101.1. It's a very welcoming church, and casual attire is absolutely allowed. There are greeters at the doors, and it's common for the pastors to remain in the hallway long after the service just waiting to chat. Most importantly, the church really focuses its messages around having a relationship with Jesus Christ and how much love He has for us. I leave each Sunday feeling inspired and better prepared for the coming week than when I entered. Services are about an hour and 10 minutes long, starting at either 9 AM or 10:45 AM. If you're searching for a friendly, inclusive, Scripture-based church that is centered on Christ, this is a place worth checking out.
