Chicken fried Steak, eggs and grits!

Great Food, great vibe and my server, Shelby was Awesome! I was greeted kindly when I walked in. I was able to get a table at the window and enjoyed my breakfast.

Their Heavenly French toast is pretty much the only item I think about when I visit. It is very good and highly recommend. We've tried other things, but nothing worth mentioning. Not very impressed with their selection of drinks and hot drinks. They should offer a wide variety of tea options and a variety of coffee options. Service is friendly and nice. Ambience is cool, nicely decorated. Beware, if you have a party of more than 5, they'll sit you by the door. The problem with that is every time someone walks in or out, you feel the cold draft and that makes dining very uncomfortable.

Under new management since last time we were here. This is a weekend brunch place for us. Typical small town cafe with local art on walls and windows. We shared a carne guisada plate and were pleased with flavors and portions. List of pie options as well to finish off your meal. Will be back!

My friend was looking for a breakfast place with pancakes and we came across Hippo Cafe in Hutto! Very cute, diner style place and our waiter Alex was great! We both ordered the Hippo Breakfast with choice of bacon or sausage, any style eggs, 2 pancakes, and choice of side...we both chose hash browns. Definitely a great place to stop by!.

My daughter and her boyfriend love this place, so when I visited we had to go. Right off the bat we couldn't talk because the music was so loud along with a loud group of people. The sandwich would have been good but the bread was so buttered my hands were dripping with oil and the cheese sadly was wrapper fake cheese. Needless to say not very good but our waitress was great. Possibly Chelsey but not sure

This was my first visit to the Hippo Cafe in Hutto. I like to support locally owned restaurants and this is a staple. We had an outstanding server who was both friendly and helpful throughout our lunch. The atmosphere is very causal with butcher paper used as "tablecloths." Great for families, easy to find and lots of parking. My buddy had Fatties Smash bacon cheese burger with fries and I had The Hippo Way, with hatch green chilies, pepper Jack cheese and a side of onion rings. All were yummy! Will be back for their signature breakfast omelettes! Definitely a repeater for me!

    Southwest Veggie Burger

Loved the strawberry crepe! Sweetness of the sauce was a great balance. Server was kind with us and let us try the white chocolate and chocolate sauce. I would definitely keep going to this place for the crepe. But unfortunately just for the crepe. The SW veggie burger was good but not good enough for second time. It's not the taste, the quantity of the filling and the size. And the extra $2 charged for onion ring was a complete ripoff. Server made it sound like "oh the menu just says fries but it's actually any side you want. So what side do you want?" And when I said you mean it's a typo and it's actually I choose a side. And she said YES. Umm nope, yes not! Charged extra and the quantity of side was more of a shame. Rather skip the side if you are going to serve like 7-8 onion rings. The burger and rings were a complete no for portion size and the money. Pretty laid back chilled out place otherwise and has ample private parking. Service was quick. They do charge additional dollars to every order to fit in the "locally sourced ingredients".

My family and I spent a few days in the area and on our way back home, we found this gem. I first want to say that our waitress was the cutest little thing! She was so kind and patient with us. I like they they use butcher paper to cover their tables. I found myself doodling more than our kids were. HA!! This is where my son was introduced to chocolate chip pancakes. . .he absolutely loved it! My husband had an omelet that he also thoroughly enjoyed as well. If you are in the are and breakfast is a must, you have to visit this location.

Hippo Cafe has a great ambiance , they were playing 70s / 80s music which I enjoyed ,hash browns were flavorless and eggs weren't the best beside that Pancakes have a good flavor , in my own opinion breakfast wasn't worth 70.00 dollars and we were charged a 6 percent admin fee .. don't know what that was about ... service wasn't the best but service wasn't horrible. I will not be coming back ..

cute little spot! Small dinner vibes. The plates were a great size and very tasty. Breakfast burrito was massive. Really hit the Sunday breakfast spot. Service was very quick no wait time. Nice and attentive server!

I think Chicken Fried Steak is one of the best defining dishes of Southern cuisine. I think Chicken…read moreFried Steak is an item that has kept the people of the Southern United States together regardless of interests, jobs, intelligence, and opinions. It is a unifying meal of blue-collared and white-collared people alike. It is a food that unifies the vast cultures of the south. There is no debate when there is a Chicken Fried Steak. Soul food and southern food are so severely important to people who were raised in the south because the overall feeling of those cuisines is that it feels like their Grandma is cooking dinner. Now if you look at my Yelp profile picture for a fraction of a second and maybe stereotype a little, you can accurately assume that my Grandma's cooking would fit in the latter and you would maybe wonder if my grandmother knows what seasoning is. If you have had her chili, you would say no. The famous Texan Cafe & Pie Shop in Hutto is a classic Southern diner that is always a perfect pick-me-up meal and is a truest staple of the area. When I first visited Hutto before moving I looked for places to try, and the abundant and sheer quantity of reviews for Texan Cafe made it clear that I had to try it. That was just over a year ago, and I still remember parking my car in the lot across the street and walking into the cozy diner with wood chairs and booths, red tablecloths, and so much decor on the walls it might be a museum, and I felt right about moving to Hutto. I was seated immediately and almost instantly ordered the Chicken Fried Steak smothered with white gravy, of course, with sides of Fried Okra and Mashed Potatoes. It was not long before the beautiful plate hit my table, and I destroyed everything on that plate. When I thought it was over, I was handed the dessert menu that was two full rows worth of pie and other options. I was mesmerized by the length of it and was overwhelmed by the options. I texted my parents to tell them and suddenly I was going back to San Antonio with slices on slices worth of pie for them to have. When my parents came up to help move me in, they wanted to go to the Texan. They were impressed with how great the meal was alongside the pies. Pies that they bought extra of to take back with them to San Antonio. When I started my job, the first meal they took us new hires to was the Texan. I tried their Blue Plate Special and found out that Chicken Fried Pork Chops exist and fell in love with that. When my brother came and visited meeting my parents and me in Hutto, we went to the Texan. We enjoyed their appetizers and everyone had to have a slice of pie. Options for everyone. When a friend came and visited, she took a solo trip to the Texan while I was at work then told me she took the best nap of her life after. My buddy and I decided to go randomly one day after work to try their Hot Pie with Brandy Sauce. That thing is a tank and is worth a visit to try alone. What a sweet creation. When my girlfriend visited me in Hutto, I took her to the Texan and she will randomly text me about how much she misses the pie. I try to get her a slice every time she comes and visits. It is her favorite thing. It is clear to see why it is a favorite to so many because everyone I have taken to the Texan has left a fan wanting to come back. I brought my grandparents home a full Blueberry pie from the Texan Cafe which my grandma told me "was the best I have even since I was a little girl. Not too sweet with a great crust. Just right. A blueberry pie is my favorite." I know this review is less of a review and more of a collection of vignettes of many stories built inside the walls of the Texan Cafe, but that is what is so beautiful about southern hospitality and southern diners. That is why there is so much decor about the extensive history of Texan Cafe and the culture of Hutto on the walls. I went back this afternoon for the first time in a short while, but I find myself continuously impressed by the quality of the food, the efficiency as a whole, and just how welcoming everyone is inside. Their pies are just truly next level. Today, I went for the Chicken Fried Pork Chop Blue Plate Special which is truly heaven sent, potato salad, fried okra, and a slice of their cherry pie. It is a meal you feel blessed to eat and a restaurant you love supporting because of it. Every pie I have had at the Texan is better than any other pie I have eaten. They could be a full time bakery and still be the monument of Hutto. It just happens they have food that warms your heart too. RIYL: Grandma's cooking if it was not dry

I'm pretty sure that's what he says. Anyways, he eats at this burger drive-thru place called Top Notch. Thanks to this movie representing Austin so well, the movie and the restaurant became a cultural touchstone of the Texas capital. Fifty years later, Top Notch opened their second location in the middle of Hutto, Texas. I've been to the Hutto Top Notch location three times now. Once to try, once because of its convenience during an event, and once for lunch with co-workers. Each time, I've left with the same impression: it's alright, alright, alright. That's what the quote was. I remember now. I've only had their burgers. Twice, their cheeseburger, and yesterday, the Top Pick Burger. All things considered, it's a decent burger. There is nothing obscene or wrong with the burger. It's just a burger. The Top Pick Burger seems like it could be fun and special, but it's really just a worse burger compared to their cheeseburger. It's not bad, but I didn't find it a better replacement for a cheeseburger. Their menu has a lot more options than just their charcoal-broiled hamburgers. They have fried chicken, chicken sandwiches, seafood combos, and their Top Dog sandwich. Two hot dogs in a sandwich. Something I'd whip together if I was seeing stars off Benadryl. Their fries are pretty good, though pretty simple: skinny, crispy, and salty. Good fries. Their shakes are thick without it being a fight for my life to drink. I don't know if my lack of intense enjoyment was thanks to recently having Johnny Rockets and being more impressed with their attempts at crafting a retro '60s burger joint, but Top Notch is more or less Middle-of-the-Pack Notch.

I like the fact that you can order off of the happy hour menu in the bar or dining area and they have a lot to offer on their happy hour menu, including drinks and appetizers. At the time I visited, they offered a separate menu that allows you to pair up with another diner at your table to order a combination of select meals, appetizers, drinks, and desserts for a really good combination price. We chose a combination that gave us each an alcoholic beverage, a shared appetizer, and two entrées. We shared the gringo dip and chips and for my entrée I had the chicken bucatini. It was a delicious blackened chicken and pasta in an alfredo sauce and it was delicious. My daughter had a soup and sandwich combo. That was a very generous portion for the price point as well. We came in on a Saturday afternoon with a group of three and had no wait at all, which was a nice bonus. For an appetizer, we ordered the chips with Gringo Dip, which is one of my favorites. I usually go with the Rattlesnake Pasta (it has a nice little kick to it), but this time I tried the Gyro Pita with fries. The portions were generous, and the gyro was delicious and very filling. I'm personally not a big fan of lettuce in my gyro, but it didn't take away from the overall flavor.
