My friend and I rolled in on a Friday 15 minutes before closing time, but the staff was gracious and allowed us to browse through the museum quickly anyway. There's a good amount of historic nostalgia on display throughout the small space-much of it dedicated to World War II. Outside, you can walk through an old airplane (I hear it was in the movie Con Air, but didn't confirm that with staff or any signage onsite) and a nearby old car that looks to have seen a bit of history itself. My favorite part of this airfield is the tall tower that you can actually climb. On the day that we visited, there was a lot of wind, so the tower had a hint of a sway to it-or maybe my equilibrium was off due to the blistering cold air being blown across my face. Either way, it was a neat view from the top, and worthy of a visit if you're not afraid of heights. read more

I just heard about this place last week and I had planned to visit it the spring but when a good friend died this week who was a retired AF fighter pilot I decided to go sooner. I did the museum and the tour and it was honestly just an incredible experience. We were lucky enough to see parts of history many never get to and sadly many would never care to. So much work and sacrifice has been put in restoring this place. There is still much to do and I hope I get a chance to help with their efforts. I am so thankful for that greatest generation who put their lives aside to ensure our world was a safe place. This place deserves to be restored and remembered. read more

A preserved World War II Army Air Force history We almost forgot to stop by this historic place where I bookmarked while in Utah. It's close to the Utah-Nevada border... we had a lot on our schedule that day and I told my hubby let's make this quick because I want to make it before dark to see the real UP House and won't be able to take pictures. As it turned out we stayed longer than expected. I was fascinated by the history of this historic airfield. The museum was open to visitors but, unfortunately, they were closed on Sundays so we were not able to enter. We did a self-guided tour and drove to each of the site markers we could find. This airfield is the most original remaining World War II Army Air Forces training base in the country. We stepped out of our car to walk in some of the sites... imagining, feeling, hearing the sounds that would've been present during the 1940's when the Army Air Forces were training heavy bombers here. The Wendover Army Air Base is home to the hangar where the famous Enola Gay was housed and from which it initially departed on its mission to drop the first atomic bomb. After our tour I gained an appreciation for the ingenuity, dedication and sacrifice of our veterans. Thank you for your services. This is a must see sight for WWII History buffs. Come see and walk where they walked. We did our self-guided tour on our own pace. We were the only ones there. I really enjoyed our visit here. Review #1799 read more

Was at the airfield for the Historic Wendover Air Show. Parking was great. So close to the entrance. Displays were interesting. So much is under construction. For the air show, planes were great. Could have used a few more as performers. read more

This museum is outstanding! It didn't cost much and mostly run by volunteers. You are able to get a good look at early American military history. There is everything from artifacts, videos, dioramas, to actually walking through structures and aircraft. read more

World War II, like all wars, are historic and shift the communities and people that were affected. WWII is no exception. Wendover, UT has a really great museum, set in an old restored airfield, that features historical items from that area - Historic Wendover Airfield Museum. This museum and area gives visitors a unique peek into how it was, to prepare for foreign attack. My grandfather was in Pearl Harbor, so I can only imagine how these soldiers manged through each day surviving in the desert. The area surrounding the museum has place markers, that explain what each building was used for. Inside the two-story museum, you'll get to see actual items from back in the day - pictures, uniforms, weapons, equipment and art, which are mostly donated by families of former soldiers - priceless. They even have a great gift shop, that features fun souvenirs. Make sure to also give a donation, because this is a type of place that should be preserved. read more

This magical place, seemingly lost in time, Wendover, is tucked away on the west edge of the great Salt Lake is truly amazing. When walking in a casino parking lot you're walking in Utah, good ole Mormon county where gambling is illegal. Walk up the stairs of the casino and as you do, almost to snub Utah, the casino is literally right on the border. As you walk through the glass doors you cross the border into Nevada where gambling is not only legal, it's condoned. It's a rare and unique experience to experience this divining line. Then there's the world war 2 Museum at the airport where they house the many artifacts from the nuclear age infancy, as well as an actual replica of Nuclear Bomb Little Boy, the bomb dropped on Japan on August 6, 1945. Don't worry conspiracy theorists, it's only a replica. This museum in itself is worth the visit. It takes you back to a bygone era. This field actually still has the pits where they loaded these top secret bombs onto Enola Gay the B-29 Superfortress. You wouldn't want to miss this gem for the world. After a good meal and/or some gambling, treat yourself to a beautiful sunset walk on the dry lake, that is if it's dry. The place is surreal. Just be sure to make certain it's dry so you don't sink into the mud and get stuck or worse find some quicksand. Seriously if you find yourself driving through this area of the US, do yourself a favor, treat yourself and spend some time in this wonderful historic place.! read more

The Wendover Airfield has a rich history -- During WW2 the Wendover Airfield was one of the largest military airfields in the country and was home to thousands of airmen. It was Wendover where the crews trained for the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The metal hanger built for the Enola Gay the Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber which dropped the bomb on Hiroshima is still intact today. During the summer the airfield is home to an outstanding historic air show, featuring a huge variety of civilian and military aircraft and the airshow includes performances from groups like the Heavy Metal Jet Team and the Viper West F-16 Demo Team. The airfield also features a small museum that has a lot of great photos and information for history, airplane, and military buffs. read more

The museum now costs $8, but we felt it was worth that and more. Loads of signed photographs and WWII paraphernalia. You can get up close to artifacts, airplanes, and the traffic control tower. We visited while waiting for our Civil Air Patrol cadets, and we'd definitely come back. read more

A great outdoor and indoor museum dedicated to the old Wendover Airbase. The driving tour is easy to navigate and among the stops include the Enola Gay Hanger, the old Firehouse, a block of WWII barracks, a hospital, and a number of other stops. I understand there is also a tour of facilities that are behind the secure area of the airport, this is a guided tour offered through the museum. The museum itself is located in the SMSgt John T. Brinkman Service Club Building (look for the light green building just before the airport apron). The museum is free and has some great WWII exhibits and a nice little gift shop inside. Be sure to get one of their challenge coins or patches for your collection. The museum is also a venue that can be rented out for events, weddings, meetings, etc. read more

I came here many years ago looking for a geocache. Con Air had been out recently and the C123 they have on display was from the movie. You'll notice the "Marshall's Service" logo painted out. That's from the movie. It was in the big hangar and you could drive anywhere. Now that's not the case, but you can purchase a map for $2 that shows a lot more information about the buildings than we knew then. The small museum is fantastic. It would be nice if the government decided this was worth saving -- a bit more. This place is pretty significant, but it's still so far in the middle of nowhere, nobody gives a sh$t. If you are in Wendover for another reason, this is worth a few minutes of your time. read more

This small but interesting museum is worth a visit for any WWII history buff. During WWII this airbase is where the flight crews trained for the bombing missions over Hiroshima and Nagasaki, including the crew of the Enola Gay. Inside the museum there are old photos and timelines featuring the history of Wendover Airfield and models of the Enola Gay. There's even a replica of the Atomic Bomb called Little Boy. I especially enjoyed seeing the old photos featuring the flight crews and reading their stories and recollections. read more

The airfield is being remodeled so only a couple buildings and an airplane are accessible. However, you can drive around what's left of the base and see what buildings they have planned for future renovations. Of what we saw we were very impressed with the information they provided and the upkeep of the items. read more

If you are a WWII history buff and find yourself on I-80 crossing through here, this is a stop to consider. I always seem to catch the museum when it's closed, but yet as I look out across the salt flats I can just imagine what it was like for the B-29 pilots back in the day...what a remote place to be! And for those not into WW2 history this airfield has been known to give people a creepy feeling. I mention it because it's happened on 7 visits with people I had with me so it's not just a one time thing. Still I hope to catch the museum open one of these days when I pass through but even closed..it's still worth a look to say you've been there. read more

Well worth the tiny detour. SO much history. The man at the front desk of the museum proper was very knowledgeable. There is a LOT of stuff to see. If you like WW2 history this is certainly a place to see. Also, if you're in to movies the airplane from Con-Air and the traffic tower from Independence Day are located at this airfield. Worth your time when visiting Wendover, or even if just passing through. Lots of airfield history and can get through all the displays in a relatively short period of time. Many things to see are presumably under construction so the museum has a long way to go but needs funding by patrons who care about keeping this place "alive". I'll be visiting again some day with the hope that there is even more to see and do. read more

It's worth checking out this old Air Force base even if you don't leave your car. The exhibits are in the buildings by the orange control tower, which you can walk up to the top. That's also where the plane is from Con Air. A very friendly docent showed me around and was good company. read more

World War II heavy bomber training base. B-17 and B-24 bomb groups trained here. The 509th Composite Group under Paul Tibbets trained here with their B-29's. It has a small museum and driving tour around the old buildings. You can climb up the original control tower and view the 6 WW II hangars and ramp. read more
