This historic Victorian home was originally completed in…read more1887, then fell into deep disrepair to the point that it was nearly torn down, but was rescued by the town and the Whitman County Historical Society in 1973. They completely restored it, and it's now filled with turn-of-the-century decor, and my favorite, insanely amazing wallpapers everywhere. The tours are free and self-guided, and there are lots of great informational plaques throughout the home. Outside you can walk the garden areas, view the log cabin that the Perkins initially lived in, or relax on one of two bench swings. Be sure to notice the resident bee colony that lives in the front second floor wall!

I liked that the seats aren't in one single long row like typical theatres but are broken up into smaller sections (no more interruptions when other people need to scoot by to use the restroom/leave. The pre-movie ads are actually pleasant and they don't delay the start time of the movie. The theatre has cute lights in the shape of flowers on the ceiling and I believe there are vintage movie posters on the back wall. The facilities seemed clean from what I saw. They don't show the latest releases but do have some recognizable movies (ex: they're showing 80s movies on Tuesdays right now and will be showing Whiplash later this year I think). The Confucius Institute at U of I also screens Chinese movies here sometimes. I only paid $6 for my ticket...very reasonably priced! The audio was a bit too loud (only noticeable when the soundtrack of the movie came on) but other than that, I had a great experience. I'll definitely be back for more shows. Add them on Facebook for the latest updates! Also, you can rent their marquee space for things like birthday wishes, proposals, etc...such a cute idea!

A Wonderful Historical Fixture in the Town of St. Maries…read more SITREP If you travel to St. Maries, ID, be sure to check out some of the historical landmarks of this logging town, including the Hughes House Historical Society. SETUP The Hughes House is basically a very grand LOG CABIN and it's foundation was built in 1902. It is located right smack in the middle downtown St. Maries. Over the years, the Hughes house has undergone many renovations and has transferred ownership many times - sometimes as a resident, and also as office space for a doctor's medical practice. HISTORIC LANDMARK It is a beautiful structure featuring great workmanship from the all-wood floors to the walls and lighting fixtures, very much a snap-shot in time of the early 20th Century. As such, the Centennial Committee of Benewah County then bought the Hughes House after a massive fundraising campaign and then opened the building as "The Hughes House Historical Museum" in 1990. THE LOWDOWN A fun stop in St. Maries filled with local history.

The hike itself is a little overgrown at certain points but nothing you can't get through. I wouldn't bring young children here though. Watch out for the stinging nettles! My boyfriend and I made the mistake of wearing shorts and we kept getting stung. My legs still ache a little. The bottom of the hike is pretty bushy and shady but the top leads to a nice hill with wild flowers, views of the wheat fields, and a great vantage point to view the surrounding area. We didn't see any wildlife besides a few birds (which were chirping beautifully throughout the hike). If you're looking for a simple place to go and relax, you should give it a try! It's now maintained by the Palouse Clearwater Environmental Institute--remember to keep it clean! There's a cute little guest book about 10-15 minutes into the trail where the actual PCEI sign is.

It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Nutting House, as the Nutting family lived in the house in the 1920's and operated the nearby Laundry. The name was changed to Heritage House in 1987 to indicate its significance, as the last remaining representation of historic domestic building in downtown Lewiston. The Heritage House is owned and managed by the Nez Perce County Historical Society which is right next door for the Heritage House.

The historical park is an interesting concept as it covers 38 sites located across the states of…read moreIdaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. It just shows how large the territory used by the Nez Perce was (and when you look at the size of their reservation now, sadly how small and confined they are now). There's a museum at the park headquarters which goes into the culture of the Nez Perce and how it was changed and evolved with the introduction of horses, white settlers, and to the present. If you're also looking into the history of the region, one stop is Canoe Camp, where the Nez Perce helped Lewis and Clark by feeding them and to carve the canoes that took them to the Pacific Ocean Captains. The Corps of Discovery spent more time among the Nez Perce than any other group they encountered in their journey, and entrusted them with their horses and gear as they embarked on their final leg of their journey to the Pacific Ocean.

This road is off the beaten path of US-12. But I frequent it when I want to go fly fishing on the…read moreTucannon. Taking this road is a short cut, and actually quite a pretty drive. This road mostly strings itself within the Patit Creek valley. This is notable in that Lewis & Clark walked in this valley during their expedition, and there is also an interesting replica of their campsite along this drive, if you want to stop by and check it out. With many curves within the hilly Palouse, and flashes of green grass, blue sky, and yellow wheat, I just find this to be a beautiful drive during the spring and summer.
