Unfortunately very disappointed. First of all I brought in a picture of the colour and cut I wanted.. my hair does not reflect what I asked for. I wanted full ombré and she put in a few streaks and a toner. I ask for a cut and she barely cut anything off. So when I go to pay it was $250!!!! Way over priced!! And what the website said for a price this is not what I paid for. Especially because it wasn't what I asked for. She just did what she wanted and then charged me an arm and a leg.. never going back.. so unhappy with my hair and due to the price I can't afford to get it fixed for a while. Overpriced- prices charged did not reflect what was online/advertised. I went in to try it out based on the reviews and prices advertised online and that fact that the stylist I saw had a deal advertised on instagram for a free cut with colour. Well, I was either charged for the cut AND the colour, in which case the business has no integrity and does not honour their own promotions, or I was charged $140 for a root colour which shows on their website as being max $80. I would have asked for an itemized bill, but the receptionist was on the phone when I was up to pay, so I wasn't able to chat with her about it and ask for an itemized bill. Pretty unprofessional all around. I'm happy with the cut and colour, and if it had played out differently I might go back, but the whole thing about not honouring their promotions left me with a feeling like they're just trying to shake me down, get whatever they can out of me, and don't care about building relationships with clients. Pretty ick to leave a small business feeling that way. Definitely won't be going back here. Too bad, the stylist did a good job. It just blew my budget is all. read more

Just an updated review to say that Amanda is no longer at Hive. She has opened up her own hair salon on Pandora Avenue.

As a whole, I'm not entirely sure if I like this place. I can honestly say that I have never left with a bad cut or colour, but I never leave feeling like I got what I asked for. I'm very picky with my hair colour. I like to keep it bright red, and I always somehow end up with it being a couple shades darker than what I had asked for because the hairstylist thinks it would be better. Granted I could probably be more assertive. The last time I dropped into Hive to get my bangs trimmed, she did a half-assed job and said she would fix them up better the next time I made a hair appointment. That is basically the last time I will go in there. I don't drop $200+ to be ripped off of a complimentary bang trim. Sorry guys. The best hairdresser I ever had there was Kat. She's unfortunately moved somewhere else. But she is the first hairdresser who has ever done exactly what I wanted, and was able to show she understood what I was going for before starting my hair. All that said, I have tons of friends who LOVE Hive, and get great haircuts from there. It's just doesn't work for me. read more

So after hearing two of my co-workers rave about Hive, I finally went. Well the stylist, Dionne, was sweet and I liked the colour but not so much the cut and I really didn't like the style either. The style fell in the torrential rain of the day and it just didn't grow out well. The worst part of the experience was this: I had set my alarm because there is only 1 hour parking on Cormorant and I did not want to get a ticket. So the alarm goes off just as Dionne is finishing...fine...but then when I went to pay the receptionist took forever and when I went to grab my umbrella, which I had left at the front, someone had stolen it! Then while they were futzing around looking for it an wondering what to do, I got a parking ticket!! So when I complained they said they could do nothing. Call the manager, they said. So I did. I called and I emailed and Ila never found it imporant enough to get back to me so....Guess what Hive Hair? You are off my list. A mediocre hairdo, a stolen umbrella, a parking ticket and no customer service from this pretentious little shop. And every time it rains, I tell someone else about my stolen umbrella and your bad customer service. read more

THE worst salon experience I've ever had. Waited for an hour and a half, got a crappy rush job hairdo and was slammed with a ridiculously expensive bill. It's been over a year and I still regret it. This place is pretentious, expensive, and overrated. Do not buy their handmade hair products either. It's just garbage in a cutesy container. read more

Alright, Hive Hair is excellent and here is why: I originally wrote a pretty lukewarm review of this salon because I wasn't too impressed with my cut the first time I went in. The owner of Hive contacted me after seeing this review and offered me a complimentary cut so I could try them again. I am so glad I did because they completely redeemed themselves! My cut the second time was amazing and exactly what I wanted. The staff were incredibly nice and helpful, especially the owner who cut my hair. The shampoo and conditioner rinse they used in my hair (their own line of hair products) made my hair shiny and silky. Overall, I was incredibly impressed and excited that I have a new salon to go to in Victoria. read more

For myself, im very comfortable in salons. The hive, is kinda a different story tho. My hairdresser was very hard to talk to and seemed more interested in the conversations that the other stylists were having as they all just sat in other chairs and did eachothers hair (litterly...i was the only client in there). I asked to get on ombre done, and watching her do my hair, i could tell she was not experienced with this technique. I ended up with what looked like bad highlights, and they were hardly showing. she then, after washing out my hair, took a 15 min lunch break mid appointment and said we were just going to "let my hair air dry"....not very professional if you ask me. Last of all, be careful if you ask a price before hand, and make sure that that is what they charge you. When making my appointment, she quoted me $110...my bill at the end? $190 read more

Jamie is the best hair dresser! My hair is extremely thick and unruly it's difficult for me to find someone who can tame the beast. After my previous hair dresser moved I was without a hairdresser for over a year.. getting random hair cuts at different places (and feeling as though I wish I had a paper bag to put over my head). I'm a new customer, I really liked my hairdresser, she was friendly, etc . The only thing I didn't like was that my hair coloring was not done close to the roots, I noticed it as soon as I got home. In no time at all, I had a half inch of roots showing. Not impressed. I don't know if this is a new strategy to get customers to come back sooner for touch ups or what. So, I'm not sure I'll be coming back. Also, customer beside me brings her 2 little noisy kids, climbing all over the chair on the mom, and pulling on hair dryer cord & into things. Can't say it's the best salon in Victoria, but I've only been to one stylist there, so obviously the experience is going to be different for other people. And no, this wasn't a one-time experience. And while the actual cut and colour were good once I got home and washed the unnecessary product and unnessary curls out of my hair (the hair was styled so I couldn't see all the hair colour that had been carelessly slopped onto my face and neck) , the sense of customer service and atmosphere there was not that great. Friendly receptionist, friendly manager, but as far as the stylist went, it was like it would have been really great if only my hair was there and the rest of me left at home. The attitude, frankly, was that the rest of me wasn't important. No apologies for the stylist being late, no apologies while the stylist took a break to talk to someone in the middle of doing my hair (and then there was a mad, mad rush to finish the job because she was running further behind), no apologies for the hair colour on my skin. I went back a second time simply because I couldn't think of anywhere else to go! For the lack of service, the cost of the salon visit was vastly overpriced. And honestly, so are the hair care products; brand name, less than adequate formulations = paying for the marketing. read more

I normally go to Richmond, Vancouver once every 6 to 8 months to get my haircut because there is an award-winning hair stylist there with whom I only trust my hair. However, because going to the mainland for a haircut is pretty expensive, especially combined with the ferry fare, I decided to save some money and buy a Groupon for a shampoo, cut and style for $29 (normally up to a $65 value) at The Hive. Unfortunately, it wasn't worth it, not even for $29. The hairstylist was friendly but as soon as she began to wash my hair, I knew I was in for a bad haircut. First of all, she didn't wait until the water was warm enough before soaking my hair and she never asked me if I was ok with the temperature of the water. Then, when it came time to cut my hair, she tried her best to do exactly what I wanted but I could tell by the way she handled the scissors that she just didn't have the skill of an experienced professional hair stylist. Frankly, when I looked around the hair salon at 2 or 3 other customers to see how their hair styles turned out, the impression that I got was that many of the hair stylists at The Hive lacked skill, experience and talent. Needless to say, I was not satisfied with my haircut. From now on, I will just save my money to go to Richmond to see my usual hair stylist, who, by the way, only charges $50 for the same service offered by The Hive. read more
