While they don't have the personalised book recommendations and tags describing the book, handwritten using the opinions of staff and newspaper reviews, the store did still have a pretty good overall feel and selection. Another understaffed store within the mall however and I do think the stationery and newsagents part of the business did suffer a little bit due to the decision for this store to have a focus on books. It is still, however, a pretty good branch of WHSmith within intu Derby, being one of the few places to have a selection of books within the city centre, even if the prices are slightly higher than online giants such as Amazon. 3*

The store now seems much more bigger than it did in the old Eagle Centre and it is definatly more bright. I've visited the new store several times looking for gifts. A lot of the promotional books are laid out well and not hidden like most stores. The stationary is pricey if you compare it to somewhere like The Works, but with good quality brand names, you pay for quality. Staff are always very helpful and polite and queues are never bad.

The staff couldn't be more friendly and will bend over backwards to help you. Nothing is too much trouble. The prices in there aren't too bad at all. OK the nature of the business means there are no cheapies but certain stores are still well over priced but not here at Music man. The after care service is great, nothing is too much trouble for them and they want their customers to go away happy. My daughter is quite happy to go back here for all her guitar accessories as well as the next time she needs her guitar restrung.

I get the impression that they started out as a mobile DJ and karaoke machine supplier along with some cheaper PA's and sound systems and branched out into a few of the budget guitars and things and now they've got this uneasy mix. I'm always going for either highly technical queries regarding professional equipment which they can't really help with and would have to order in anyway or I'm on the musical instrument side which they only cover the basics of for the purposes of the beginner. They have a good range of paperback fiction, but particularly good are the general interest books such as gardening and cooking. Although the range is very limited (and the standard of books aren't always great, given that no-one else wanted to buy them either), you can sometimes find a great book, particularly hardback reference books- for a hugely reduced price. They do also sell art and crafts- blank canvases and paints etc, but I found that it's cheaper to buy them from somewhere like Home Bargains.

But The Works is not just a bookshop - they also have a surprisingly good range of artists' materials, including paint and canvas, and some crafty items too such as papers and card-making supplies. However, their formal shirts are of excellent quality, comfortable and smart looking, I regularly buy them for work. The rest of the store is punctuated with the occasional DVD and CDs ranges, as well as items like shortbread, blankets etc. The staff are always helpful and friendly, theres always a sale on, but for me this is a place where I only ever buy one type of item.
