The one quality that's never varied however is that of the moules marinier, mussels which are surely to die for. Or at least, make a special journey for. Sometimes accompaniments can be a little undercooked, and depending on your mood the jovial, jokey and bantering staff can either be the perfect tonic or your worst enemy. It's not the most efficient of service but most of the times I've stopped by I've felt well looked after. Despite its troubled past (problems with chefs scarpering with a great deal of moolah), Auberge does come up trumps when it wants to. A frequently changing menu keeps things really fresh, and the staff do have a lot of advice to offer about the menu. While the wine list can be a little pricey you can often get special offers if you look in the right places, so you might be able to get your money's worth. Connected to the Vincent Hotel, the V-cafe seems more 'restaurant' than 'cafe'. However, I expect this is to attract a larger clientele base; these posh hotels can be slightly intimidating after all. We arrived just before 1pm and were asked if we'd made a reservation. When the room filled up at around half past 1, we realised there might actually be a reason for reservations at lunch time. This place is popular. My girlfriend, still feeling slightly delicate from the night before, ordered the 'homemade beans on thick buttered toast'. The menu is extensive and interesting, but we both stayed away from the sushi side of the menu (I ordered the Vincent club, probably the best version of a 'club' sandwich I've ever had.) preferring to stick with what we know. It is a little pricey, but the food you're getting really is excellent. The attention to detail throughout the "cafe" is also impressive, from the decoration of the food to the -v- sign found on just about everything. They also do a "beat the clock" offer between Sunday and Friday 3pm-7pm, where the time of your order dictates the price you will pay for a pizza or pasta. The atmosphere was great at lunchtime, although I would be hesitant to visit of an evening as I can imagine it being exceedingly busy.

Looking at what other people were eating, and how quiet they were whilst eating it, I'm guessing that pretty much everything on the menu is worth writing about. I'll be testing that assertion over the next 8 months or so as I work my way through the menu! Meals cost about £25 per head including drinks, assuming you are too full after the main course to consider a dessert. I was so full I vowed never to eat again as I left clutching a doggie bag containing what remained of the main course to eat later for supper. As well as the small dining room downstairs (seats about 12), there's also a larger room upstairs - I've not been in it yet, but judging by the size of the party that came in I'm guessing it can hold about 20 upstairs. Staff are friendly, attentive and responsive to your needs - you're not left waiting around wondering where your drink is, etc. Freshly cooked food arrives at your table quickly but calmly, but I saw a note on the menu stating that Dim Sum dishes take a bit longer to prepare. If you know someone who says they don't like Chinese food, this is the place to re-educate them!

The quality of the dishes sets it apart from the usual Chinese places but, to be honest, when it comes to getting Chinese food I think I prefer the downmarket all-you-can-eat places or just getting a takeaway and eating it whilst watching TV.
