We were in town for the Art in the Park day and our dinner really topped off a great day with the whole family. This is our favorite spot to eat when we are in Morro Bay. There is a great variety of food and a great kids menu. There are plenty of things to choose from. There are traditional roast beef sandwiches, Hofbrau specials like sausage sandwiches, German potato salad, and other seaside favorites like clam chowder with a bread bowl or fish and chips. I will probably lose my L.A. card for this, but I think the Hofbrau's roast beef dip beats Philippe's. And the fish and chips are really good too...light, crispy and not dripping with oil. No ambience here except for the picture-perfect view of Morro Rock, but just good food. And they allow furry friends at the outdoor tables, so feel free to bring Snoopy or Ghost. Only giving them four stars because when you order your food using a credit card, they ask you right then and there if you want to add a tip. Nothing against tipping servers, but I don't like being put on the spot like that before I've even been served. read more

I don't understand the 4 star reviews for this place. It is a casual, order at the counter place with slightly inedible food. We ordered the fish sandwiches with salad, fries and a soda. The soda was the best part of the meal. The fish was tough and mealy, suffering from freezer burn. The fries were overly seasoned and greasy. The salad seemed like it was from a school cafeteria adorned with cheddar cheese. Outside seating is noisy and tourist ridden. Service was fine. My friends wanted to go state at the rock so we came to Morro Bay area. The town has a lot of beach front areas and we walked into this one for the view and the tasty looking roast beef that a gentleman was carving. You order at the counter and are given a token which is either a number or one of the joystick looking stands. You pay right and tip right there. The roast beef is assembled right in front of you. I'd asked for extra dip in the jus and they obliged. The condiments have mustard and horseradish too which I think is a good addition to the roast beef. The seating: Both indoor and outdoor seating available. They don't have umbrellas outdoor and we ended up sitting in the sun which got a little hot after a while. In hindsight I'd prefer inside with the view of the ocean. Appetizers: Calamari served as strips and popcorn shrimps. Food was nice and hot however it lacked a little in the taste and seasoning department. I liked the Calamari strips and it's the first time I've had it served like that. The roast beef: This was the first order to come out along with the apps. Beef pieces were thick. A little on the drier side. Jus had a nice flavor. Not the best roast beef sandwich I've had but definitely among the better ones. Chicken sandwich: My friend ordered a chicken sandwich which was pretty standard. Served with lettuce , tomatoes and pickle. California chicken Sandwich: Same as above but with an avocado (Hipsters beware!) Overall the food was ok. Came here on the 4th and the hot pastrami here was amazing. Also got a cup of their clam chowder and that didn't fail to impress either. Geeze let people come in and see the food Im sure they may buy even more. Its sad to see some of the old time staples no longer offered, Pretzel come on Hofbrau really if your going to go with a german flair then keep a few of the old time staples, not they have jalapeno poppers? Maybe should be El Hofbrau. The beer was still good the fish sampler not so much. Most of our fish was over breaded so there was more bread than fish the people across from me were had as their fish and chips came with 4 FOUR french fries. the outdoor seating area and use a good cleaning and staff could try to put on a smile. Its not the same place anymore so I cant really say you gotta go there. We walked in and weren't sure what to expect. It was pretty empty and it wasn't clear how to order. It's not a full service scenario. That's fine but we weren't really told what to do when we came in. You pick up your drinks at the end of the counter and then sit down at the table where they deliver your food. The fish sandwiches were excellent. Great batter that fried up crispy and airy. The bun it came on and the tartar sauce were excellent. We also loved the chicken and fries. Great meal over all! Before i came to Morro Bay I had read an article about this place so I really wanted to try it. I ordered the Roast Beef Au Jus with Provolone. It was good but it wasn't great. For me, if it had caramelized onions it would have been better...it would have probably made it great. I love how they have thick slices of beef in it. I also ordered fries & drink with it...came to about $21.00. The sandwich was pretty filling, I only ate half and had the other half later that night. Like most of the restaurants in the area you have a great view...that's if the thick fog is not blocking it. I only wish I could have tried the other stuff on the menu. After driving around on a busy weekend day looking for just the right sandwich, we decided to try this place based on the sign advertising their roast beef sandwich. It was the best roast beef sandwich we've ever had! Hands down! The bun was soft and the perfect ratio. The roast beef was tender, juicy, flavorful and stacked high! We used to go to Haufbrau frequently. Any way we went back after a long break. The experience was lackluster at best. We each had the roast beef dip sando. The bun was dry, the meat chewy and tasteless. Had to ask for horseradish and mustard, I know COVID thing, the teaspoon of each did nothing to help the situation. Been coming to Morro Bay and the Central Coast for 40 years and this is the first time we've eat at Hofbrau. We were encouraged by other YELP reviews and the "Yelpers" didn't disappoint! We ordered a beef dip, turkey dip, 4 piece fish and chips and a side of fried clams. We also had green salads. When an establishment claims to have a sandwich that has been "A classic for over 40 years" then the sandwich had better be something to write about. Hence my writing about it! The beef dip was delicious and piled high with carved meat. The roll it was served on was also very tasty and not too soft or hard. It was just right. The au jus dipping sauce just made the whole thing come together! The turkey sandwich was just as good, but made with freshly carved turkey that was cooked perfectly. It was delicious on its own - not dry at all. Why would we order fish, chips and clams at a Hofbrau?? Yelpers!!! You guys said the seafood was really good and so we gave it a try. Okay! I'm going out on a limb here, but the fish and chips were likely the best I've had in all the Central Coast! I know. Lofty words, but true. The batter was so light and airy. It didn't cling and get all soggy after I put on a generous amount of vinegar. The coating stayed crisp and light and the fish was mellow and flakey - just like it's supposed to be. The fried seemed to be double fried and were very crispy and delicious. The salads were fresh and the portion was plentiful. The only thing that wasn't a standout were the fried clam strips. They were good, but just as good as anyone else's. So...no disappointment at all. The staff that took our order at the register was friendly and helpful (confirmed the fish and chips were really, really good) and then brought our food to us when it was ready. We were here during Covid and stayed right across the parking lot from the restaurant. They have outdoor dining but it is limited with the amount of people they can seat so we took our food back to our room that had a balcony basically right on the water, best seat in the house! The staff was very friendly and we bought food here three different times and it was all great! We got the fish and chips two nights with clam chowder, yum! We got a french dip for lunch one day and it was loaded with really good beef and excellent au jus. This will be a regular stop on our visits! read more

We chose this restaurant based on many decent reviews, but found it to be utterly disappointing. I recognize that during covid we all need to make concessions for the new normal, and none of those factors play a part in this review. The experience was rotten for two reasons: one employee clearly didn't care one iota about anyone, and the food is mediocre at best. To start, when we ordered no clarifying questions were asked, so not surprising, when the food came out several things were wrong. Not once was an apology made nor an attempt to correct it. Poor service from the off, and quite frankly just from the hostess who took our order and could not have cared less. Lastly, the food is truly mediocre at best. The name of the restaurant is "hofbrau" so logic would dictate that selecting German fare would be a good idea; let me warn you, it isn't. The bratwurst was flavorless and mealy, the sauerkraut is out of a can, the fish, chips, and burger were decent, but you have to work pretty hard to mess those up . Overall, I'd avoid this spot, or just play it safe with a regular burger . read more

Super disappointed in this place especially after all the Yelp hype per the other reviews. Did the other Yelpers go to a different place? First off, the entrance is kind of hidden on the side of the building, which is a little misleading by where their sign is out front...but that is neither really here nor there. It is cafeteria style ordering and seating. I was getting my order to go and had scouted out their menu online so I already had my heart (and tastebuds) set on their highly touted reuben. So, when I ordered and they told me they were out of corned beef (which I couldn't believe as it was still 2hrs until they closed...seriously?!?) my heart sank. I asked if they could do the pastrami instead. I also decided to get a cup of their clam chowder as I was wanting something sea-foody and it just sounded good since it was chilly that evening. I definitely had some price-shock at the register when for just the sandwich and soup it was almost $15?!?! The guy at the register tried to joke that "it's the tax", but I felt like correcting him and saying "no, it's how much you ridiculously charge for a sandwich because you think this is NYC." I got my order to go (I had to ask for crackers for the soup and utensils and got a quizzical look as if no one had ever requested such things) and I have to say the absolute disappointment that followed was just disheartening! Firstly, I thought they had given me potato chowder instead of clam because I think there was MAYBE one clam in the entire cup of soup, and I am sorry, but accidentally dropping a piece of clam in a chowder as an afterthought does not a clam chowder make! As for the reuben, I can't even really call it that...it was an absolute joke, and not a funny one at $11.95 for just the sandwich (and the au jus it came with)! I eat a lot of reubens and have NEVER had one that had "au jus"...so this over glorified french dip wasn't even a good version of that. The pastrami was underwhelming as was the smattering of what I am guessing is Vlasic sauerkraut and in the description it says "on rye" so either the kitchen didn't even know what the hell they were making or can't tell the difference between rye and a french roll. Needless to say, NEVER AGAIN and I highly urge anyone and everyone to try one of the many other quality choices in Morro as this was NOT one of them. The dip sandwiches don't skimp on meat. The homemade tartar and marinara sauce is really good and I usually don't like marinara sauce.

Being a resident of Morro Bay we had never tried this place before. We've seen it many times, and passed by it. Unfortunately we didn't pass by it again; we decided to eat there. My mother got the Reuben $12, I got the hamburger $10. The Reuben was awful, the meet was dry and flavorless the bread was dry, the sauerkraut didn't taste like sauerkraut. They put some weird kind of cheese on there, Was not Swiss! The hamburger was dry and flavorless. Neither of the dishes were presented in any way that looked appetizing. I could've got a better hamburger at McDonald's for three dollars, and could've gotten a better Reuben At Arby's. I don't understand how this place has four stars. It reminds me of being at an amusement park when you're forced to eat the park food that is way overpriced and You scarf it down because you're starving Don't be trapped at this tourist trap! read more
