Any outfit dealing with customers should be striving to match the great customer service Dave and his team provide. I scheduled an appointment with Dave based on the prior Yelp reviews because I needed assistance on part of my personal income tax that was complicated. Dave's assistant greeted me at the door and asked if I'd like a refreshment. She put me right at ease despite my financial anxiety. Dave was friendly and patiently and clearly explained how my tax situation worked out and why certain parts of my income were taxable or not. He certainly knows his stuff about the US Tax Code, and he can navigate even the most complex of financial docs with ease. The final bill for his services was also a surprise, as it was much MUCH more reasonable than some of the bigger "box store" tax chains. I'm not at LIBERTY to say How & wheRe I found the competing prices, but they're the ones around the BLOCK. Regardless, Dave and Fortunate Fields were much more reasonably priced. If you need help figuring out your taxes, I would highly recommend Dave Yoshida and his team. He made me pay in advance which is unusual and should have been my first red flag. He had all of my information and that of the foundation in hand by the middle of February. Despite this he filled extensions for both filings, the second red flag. I had to email, text and call multiple times to get a status update from him, third red flag. I pay estimated taxes so need to know how much was due for April 15th and June 16th which I could not calculate without the 2023 taxes having been completed. I was so stressed and anxious, the fourth red flag. He finally filled my taxes on June 16th. Last week I got a letter from FTB telling me my taxes had been incorrectly calculated and I owed another $2,000 including $90 in late fees and interest payments. Today I got a letter from the IRS telling me my taxes had been incorrectly calculated and I was getting a $300 refund. So he was late to file despite having all the necessary information well in advance and then to add insult to injury HE DID NOT PREPARE EITHER OF MY TAX FILINGS CORRECTLY.

Hoffman and Associates did very poor accounting. I had to hire a different book keeper and accountant, because they messed up my chart of accounts and did not proportion income correctly after I gave clear instructions. We also for 6 other errors from Hoffman. Also, there were multiple deductions not included that should have. When I tried to address the issues with them, multiple emails went unreturned. When meeting with Michael Hoffman, he constantly interrupts me and does not listen. Also, they are for sure not keeping up on new tax laws, which allows businesses to deduct state taxes from federal, which cost me over $6000. My new accountant quickly caught it, but I can not retroactively go back and get the credit. There is an old sayin, "You get what you pay for." Hoffman Accounting may be cheap, but did I ever pay for it on my taxes! They rush people through and do high volume with minimal attention to details. That is their business model. I cant remember the last time I left a negative review of a business, but I feel the obligation to warn people, so they do not have the same experience I did and lose money from working with them. read more

Just had my tax return done by Mike and he really knows his stuff! Last year I started my own business, so this was the first year of doing my taxes. To say I was nervous about doing my taxes goes without saying. Working with Mike really takes the tension out of the process since he is able to help you understand the in's and out's. Also, she is very rude, and they will charge you even when they don't do their work. Stay away from this company and use Paychex for your payroll. read more

My initial message: "Hi Brian, I am just looking for a quote for 2023 tax filing, not to actually start it yet. We will be needing help on a couple of tax situations this year." His exact response: "Understood. I will provide a quote for 2023 during our call. I just sent the questionnaire." He then emailed me the questionnaire; I put I was interested in "Individual taxes" and sent it back to him, I NEVER put I was interested in Investment management or any other kind of financial services. So he knew this whole time I only wanted tax preparation. He still proceeded to call me today and asked a few questions related to our tax situation. Then at the end of the call he asked if I was looking for someone to manage our investments, I said not at this point...we are only looking for tax preparation now. His tone completely changed and he abruptly told me in a condescending manner we are not a good fit because they are saturated with tax preparation clients and he's looking for clients who want investment management. I was pretty shocked at the change in his tone and his annoyance once I told him I didn't need someone to manage our investments. Again, I made it VERY clear from the start I was looking for tax preparation services only from my initial message AND the questionnaire he had me fill out. I honestly don't know why he still called and was rude when he knew he couldn't take on any more clients who only wanted tax filing.

I originally found Darryl Hale on Yelp and had him prepare our taxes the last couple of years…read morewithout issue. This year Darryl reached out directly offering tax planning services. After paying the $2,500 assessment fee Darryl recommended two tax strategies, both of which raised significant concerns: 1) GFX Trading - a complex Series LLC foreign currency structure. This strategy was presented as a way to generate large tax deductions through foreign currency trading. When I asked for written explanations of how the strategy worked, what the economic substance was, and how it would hold up under IRS scrutiny, the answers were incomplete and at times inaccurate. When I declined to proceed, he called me immediately, insisting "everyone is doing this," and became defensive. I later understood that his affiliated company receives commissions from this arrangement, which was not disclosed before he recommended it. 2) DNA Harmony - involving the purchase of gift certificates for Jazz Band Splash red-light therapy. This was presented as a deductible expense through a separate Series LLC structure. Again, I requested information in writing about the IRS basis for deducting these types of purchases, but the responses did not address compliance, valuation, or audit exposure. When I decided not to move forward with either strategy based on the lack of clear documentation and concerns about risk, I requested a refund of my $2,500 fee. The request was denied. My experience did not meet the level of professionalism I expect from a tax advisor. I would not return nor recommend Darryl Hale and will be filing a complaint with the IRS Office of Professional Responsibility and notifying the California Franchise Tax Board.

He still won't pay me back for it. The facts: - In 2021 I got a decent-sized raise at my job. (Brag?) When it came time to file my 2021 taxes, David accidentally COPY AND PASTED the much lower income from the previous year, 2020. So he underreported my income by a lot. Of course he had my accurate 2021 W-2 -- but he was too disorganized, rushed or careless to use it. - Not only that, he copy and pasted some *unemployment income* from 2020 into my 2021 return, so -- to add insult to injury -- not only did he massively under-report my salary, he also slightly over-reported it with non-existent unemployment income. - I ended up owing almost $10K in back taxes, interest, and an extra-high penalty. - After I paid the back taxes, he tried to help with appealing the penalty. But he did this by sending the IRS a half-hearted ashy letter about numbers that were "entered incorrectly" and he didn't specifically request or argue for an abatement in the penalty. - (I also paid a ridiculous amount of interest.) - Unsurprisingly the IRS rejected this attempt and ruled that the penalty must be paid. - It's around this time that communication with David York became especially spotty, where he said he'll call the IRS...but then he fell off the map and it took weeks to hear back from him. - I paid the penalty by the deadline. - He called the IRS (after the deadline lol) then emailed me claiming that the "the penalty and interest have been removed" and I'm like...wtf are you talking about. That's probably because of what I paid already?? - I've asked him to reimburse me just for some of penalties and interest, $1,852.68 -- which doesn't even include an earlier interest payment or state penalties that his mistake bubbled up. Gave him an address to send a check. But he hasn't. It's been radio silence from David York. - "You should hear back from me by Monday" is the last thing he wrote to me, back in January 2025, words to echo on into the void forever. - Silver lining though, I recently learned Rihanna's accountant also owes her money so now I have something in common with Rihanna. Read the one-star reviews. They'll save you a lot of time and $$$$$ in the future. (Oh, and side note not related to this income tax fiasco -- on a return for my S Corp at the time, he didn't even provide us the full return, just an authorization page that was missing Form 1120-S and the K1, so we were scrambling the following year looking for it.) I also noticed his business has a second profile on yelp, which might help him get around these one-stars. You should choose literally anyone else to do your taxes.
