It's unfortunate, but I had to leave this business. They made a huge error on my taxes and basically forgot to enter my state taxes as a deduction. Nobody ever apologized or said it was their mistake. I was just supposed to be grateful when they got it back. The owner is condescending to women. If you act confused or you need additional explanation, he kind of rolls his eyes. He would never ever admit an error. So I don't think it's worth the risk to go there. I have since left. read more

I have had a nightmare experience, specifically with Tara. She will not allow me to speak to anyone outside of her & has become in increasingly aggressive with each F/U call. She then threatened me when I asked for the CPA, stating that they shredded my original financial documents & to stop calling. This is after telling me that she would look for them in the basement. The office has now been sent certified mail demanding the return of my documents & may be responsible for any penalties applied to my tax account while I pend their return. Typically I never write reviews but I need to look out for fellow servicemembers. Let me start off by saying Tara is the kindest, organized, and top notch front desk and deserves better than working here. The office dog is cool as well but the owner is pretentious. This was my second and final year using this firm. If you enjoy paying $425 to watch a guy with a condescending attitude ignorantly mash numbers into a computer for 30 minutes, Mike Hoffman is your guy! Thought I was hiring a seasoned professional to help me in a tough tax situation. I filled him in on SCRA and Pub 523 clauses he had no idea about, I called back and emailed multiple times saying this return wasn't right, where he assured me it was, had me owing thousands to the IRS and 3 separate states. I paid another tax professional to check his work and found that I overpaid the IRS and owe nothing to the 3 states. A discrepancy of over $8000. Take your business elsewhere, especially if you are military with multiple income sources. read more

I was just on the phone with this fellow, and although he is very business-like, gets to the point, and ensures the communication is precise and clear, he's nice as hell. I think some of the people might mistake the emphasis on clarity and precision for lack of friendliness. Then again, maybe he doesn't suffer fools and I just barely snuck under his fool radar. I called because I wanted help amending a return. He talked to me for about 5-10 minutes, gave me some informal guidance on how I might be able to arrive at a solution without forking out a bunch of money, and said to come in if I ran into trouble I couldn't solve myself. I needed help correcting my taxes and was in no capacity to make the corrections myself. Seeking professional assistance, I was nervous reaching out to a tax preparer as I had always done my taxes myself up to this point. I was also wary of being taken advantage of/being over charged. What drew me to Hoffman & Associates is that they had great ratings here (Yelp) and their website indicated not only are they a reputable firm, but they also uphold the qualities of integrity and honesty. I can say definitively after working with Mr. Hoffman 1-on-1 to correct my taxes that those qualities are certainly upheld. Not only was Mr. Hoffman able to meet with me almost immediately, he went above and beyond and spent additional time to walk me through my taxes even when it meant going past our scheduled appointment end time. He was also very patient with answering all of my questions regarding the tax correction process, which was really appreciated on my end. Not only did they not do it but they also misplaced all my personal information to include my social security number! Met with Mike just a few days ago. He was a very nice guy, relaxed, helpful. He was able to find me tax savings with his in-depth understanding of taxes and finance. I decided to go to Mike because I first went to H+R Block and the guy they gave me was incompetent (he couldn't even explain to me why my taxes came out the way he did). Helpful? Yes Informative? Also yes Friendly? No Good customer service experience? No Felt judged? Yes Let me explain. I was looking for an accountant, we recently formed an LLC after 30+ years as a sole proprietor. Good reviews so I contacted them through yelp. They graciously contacted me back and then left it to me to call which I planned to do but forgot. When I didn't call they contacted me again with "you didn't call" not the best way to reach out to a potential new client. So I called literally within 2 minutes of the yelp contact and he didn't even know who I was. That aside the entire question and answer session, his way of getting to know my situation, was as follows... He asks question... I reply with answer to his question.... He says why? Or how come? Everything I answered felt judged. A fact gathering session but with every answer he would question my intentions. Needless to say I stupidly (if that's a word) made an appointment without thinking about what I just experienced and with a woman who was even worse at customer service. I called back to cancel once I realized what had just happened. I understand that these people are numbers people and maybe not a people persons but get at least one person on the office who can either teach everyone or is the first point of contact. read more

Got whacked with a letter from the IRS saying we owed $5k in taxes plus $1k penalties and $300 interest, all because an IRA rollover had been treated as a lumpsum distribution by the IRS 2 years ago. Requested quotes from those with 5 stars here, and within a reasonable distance. One said he was going on vacation for a couple months and wished us luck. One said we needed to re-file and could do it ourselves. Michael Hoffman gave us the only response indicating knowlege and experience with our problem. Got an appointment the same day I called and brought in all the relevant documentation. We were seen immediately in a pleasant corner office with tall windows. There was a monitor facing us so we could see the work in progress as Miichael composed the rebuttal statement to the IRS. We were given a large envelope addressed to the IRS with the appropriate supporting documents. I sent a random request to ten accounting firms asking for a quote to review my finished taxes that I need to amend. (one change review 3 pages ). I've been doing my own business taxes for 10+ years,and was quoted from one place a $250 to start, WHAT?! . Do you know that Mike was so kind to offer to look them over for free since they were already done and I only wanted to check for accuracy due to that one change.
