We're in town during Thanksgiving for the first time in a decade. I ordered all the sides from towne and oak (delish), the pies from three tarts (perfection) and then I need a turkey. I checked Yelp and ordered from Hofherr Meat based on the stellar reviews. I often peek into Hofherr Meat when walking into Shred415 so was excited to finally try it! About 2 days before I was telling a friend where i got my turkey and she asked me how i plan to cook it. Cook it?? It literally had not occurred to me that my turkey would be raw. If it's not obvious from this review and ALL my restaurant reviews the kitchen is not where I shine. I called Hofherr to ask if they could cook my turkey and while apparently they do that it was too late to put in the request. Good to know for next time. Wednesday morning I joined the rest of the North Shore to pick up my raw turkey. I ran into a friend while waiting for it who is more of an expert when it comes to making turkeys and she asked them to give me gravy, a turkey bag (apparently easier and lessy messy to cook in a bag) and some directions. The next day I followed their directions along with some help from my bestie chatgpt. I stuck it in the oven and crossed my fingers we wouldn't be going without a turkey this thanksgsiving. We had a little mishap when the thermometer melted into the turkey (oops), but besides that it really wasn't too difficult of a process. And while I had trouble eating a turkey after seeing it raw my family was thrilled that it was perfectly moist and praised my turkey making skills. I did have a few bites and did think it was pretty good- and i dont even like turkey. I would definitely get my turkey from here again, although next time i'll be ordering a cooked turkey out of convenience. But for those of you who like to cook a turkey I recommend them! read more

We ordered some holiday meats and it was superb. We ordered brisket and some chicken and it was cooked to perfection. Great quality and delicious. Some things to work on.. Holiday pickups are horrible. They need someone at the door to check you in for a pickup or daily order from the counter. I waited an hour and 20 minutes for my pickup and I came at the time I was supposed to. It took 20 minutes to give them my name! In addition they didn't give me the buns or bbq sauce I was supposed to get and paid for. Love these guys but can we get the holiday process down a little better? read more

I tried the famous Italian beef for 17.00. Was expecting something wonderful and it wasn't. The bread they used was tough not the usual bread they usually use for Italian beef's. The Ajus had no taste or spices. The amount of beef they put on the 17,00 sandwich was so small. They hardly put any peppers on it. Here's a picture of a half. Best. Turkey. Ever! There are few places from memory where I recall a Thanksgiving turkey being remarkable. The last time we had turkey this good was many years ago when we ordered from Treasure Island. Their turkey was perfectly moist and flavorful. I didn't think we were going to have a turkey that good until we ordered our Thanksgiving turkey through Hofherr Meat. We ordered their chargrilled version. The added bonus was it came pre-carved. It was picture perfect and herbs were infused in the juicy, charred meat. Pickup was somewhat hectic with their kitchen busy. Many folks were patiently waiting for orders while food was prepped for pickup. Our turkey with gravy was pricey but we enjoyed several days of leftovers saving us a weekly grocery trip. I was genuinely devastated when I found that Elegance In Meats was closing their Northbrook location. The area grocery stores have decent butchers, but not as good as a dedicated butcher shop. Shaevitz in Highland Park is good, but a little difficult to get to. There are some nice shops further west, but we can't always drive out that way. Luckily we found Hofherr Meat in Northfield, which has become our regular stop for fresh meats, handmade sandwiches, savory rotisserie chicken, and herbaceous crispy fried chicken on Sundays. Hofherr has a great selection of meats, cheeses, prepared foods, and carefully curated cold cuts. All of the food we've gotten from here has been excellent. When it comes to a quality butcher shop, though, just having good selection is only part of the equation... We love food, but we're not meat experts - this is why we depend on our local butcher to help us out. Emily is an absolute superstar! She has helped pick out the best cuts, shared all kinds of butcher wisdom with us, taught us all kinds of preparation tips, and is always a delight to talk to. Folks like Emily are what separates a meat store from a quality butcher shop. If you need the freshest and best quality cuts of meat; if you crave an awesome hand-made signature sandwich; if you want to pick up some tasty cold cuts or prepared deli favorites; if you require the service and knowledge of a top tier butcher, you should give Hofherr meat a visit. These people live and breathe MEAT. The staff there literally studied it, knowing it in every which way. We only trust Hofherr to exceed our food expectations - providing the freshest and highest quality meats for a myriad of events. Our favorites are bone-in ribeye steaks, briskets, lamb w/ mint sauce (especially around Easter), and beef ribs. Not once have we been disappointed by either their produce or expert cooking tips; they won a contest for crying out loud! For the added cost, it is all worth it. Sold in bulk, too, which is very convenient for larger parties. They are especially notorious for their Sunday fried chicken (you must place the order by Saturday, at the latest). The menu was perfect and there was more than enough food for everyone. When you're having an event, I highly recommend giving Hohferr Catering the job. #wheresthebeef? It's Herr. At Hofherr Meat Company. Well wouldn't ya know it, lucky little me once again nabbed a $100 gift card (this time for meaty sustenance instead of cigars) from a WDRV 97.1FM 'The Drive' giveaway, after I called into their morning radio show and answered a series of questions correctly. I actually had to earn it this time around as opposed to just being randomly selected from a drawing. But I still won, so yay me! When I got the voucher in the mail I was giddy with excitement......until I realized that I'd have to drive from my swanky bachelor pad in Oak Park way the hell up to freakin' Winnetka (okay, technically Northfield, but just as far), a 50 minute drive. I'm happy to report that my experience at Hofherr made it well worth my time. I walked in and was warmly greeted by the older guy behind the counter (Sean?), who helped me pick out various cuts of meat while making suggestions. He had a younger assistant with him (his nephew?) who also helped me out. As I worked my way down the counter, I chose a wide variety of items that they were nice enough to cut to order for me (since 1.7lbs of high-grade sirloin was just far too much cow flesh for me to take home). They were friendly and patient as I gradually worked towards that $100 goal, picking and choosing things that sounded/looked great. Ultimately, I went with the following (brace yourself, a MEATSTORM is coming) : .......cheddar Jalapeño sausage (2), a marinated pork chop, blue cheese burgers (4), smoked bacon ( 1/2 lb), teriyaki jerky, top sirloin flap (¾ lb), duck pâté, TWO choice filet mignons (¾ lb each), a garlic chicken breast, and finally Korean bbq short ribs ( 1/2 lb). Yeah, I'll be living large and grilling my heart out long after Independence Day. The older gentleman was happy to hand over his fine wares to me, and I was thrilled to receive them. Even though the total came to $100.13, he was kind enough to wave the 13¢ balance and sent me on my way. He was also excited to meet another "winner" of the morning show giveaway, which I found amusing. Definitely recommend Hofherr for your Father's Day, Fourth of July, or general summer grilling needs. Nothing made me happier than to support local on Thanksgiving this year. I was close to ordering my pre-cooked turkey from another local store, and one day I received an email in my inbox about Hofherr's smoked turkeys. This place is known for their quality meats, so I immediately picked up the phone and called to place my order. Not only was it extremely reasonably priced (less than the other place I was planning to order from), but I was able to order at the very last minute. So...are you wondering if it was delicious? It was truly what I was hoping for. It was the tastiest and juiciest pre-cooked turkey I've ever served on Thanksgiving, and my guests (including my picky sons, my hubby who doesn't eat much meat, and even the neighbor's dog) loved it. Flavorful and easy to prepare (although I got a little confused on the heating instructions), I will order from Hofherr again next year for certain. Top tip: I couldn't figure out how to get the skin crispy, but a friend who is a meat expert mentioned smoked turkeys don't produce crispy skin. Three trips in and I'm ready to tell you in detail how awesome this butcher is. Let's go! First trip we went and picked up a gaggle of meats. We picked up the most succulent chicken thighs ever to be found. When I cooked them up with Old Cedarburg spice from The Spice House, they were eye-rolling-into-back-of-the-head delicious. The dog and the man were both in the kitchen watching me after awhile. I am no slouch when it comes to cooking, but these made me look REALLY good. Very tender. We also bought a rib eye, which I did in a cast iron skillet. Now, I'm normally a New York strip kinda girl, woman, so this was new territory for me. However, Emily gave excellent instructions, so that came out like an award winning piece of beef. Salt and pepper, and butter. That was it. So tender and delightful. They carry pig ears for puppers, so she got a few of those, and it was the first time I wasn't able to take something from her. I've picked up pig ears every subsequent visit, much to her joy. We also picked up some portabella mushroom caps, as well as some potato salad, which even I liked, and I don't like potato salad typically, and a twice baked potato. SO very good. Oh my goodness. Basically everything was a right treat. Second trip was for the Nashville fried chicken, which oh my sweet mother of Murphy, was so good. The northshore suffers from being a fried chicken desert. UNTIL NOW, friends!! We ordered our chicken with the Nashville on the side, which was a good idea, because even boyfriend said "whooo-weeee, that's hot", and we aren't candy butts about the spicy. The chicken was both tender and crisp, did I say succulent yet? If there had been any left, I might have made a chicken salad with it, and that would have been an epic win too. We didn't care for the pickles that came with, they were more on the sweet side than we like, but we did enjoy how dilly they were. So it was this sort of mouth confusion for us. We liked them, but we didn't. The biscuits were off the chain as well- just a little bit of sassy but not too much to make you run for the milk. Definitely will be doing more of the fried chicken in the future. Order ahead, because they do this magical chicken once a week on Sundays. Pre-orders only! Third trip was for more chicken thighs, and some chicken breast. Emily showed me how to cut up a chicken properly, I feel clever now. When I was leaving, they were opening up the rotisserie chicken oven, so then I had to go back and pick up one of those. I had a few bites which were, yes you better believe it, tender and succulent. How does that even happen?! Boyfriend was ready to street fight for the chicken. Almost had to pull over and let him at it, but we did make it home before he broke into it. So good, will definitely be doing more of those, too. I'm twitching to do a chicken soup out of one of those puppies. That trip saw me with a few things that I've just started to unthaw, but lemme tell you how big the pork chops are. Just righteous. Solid chops that look about the size you see in restaurants. I'm really looking forward to tucking into those! They have an incredible selection of mayonaisse, including Duke's and Kewpie. You'll find some barbeque sauce, some spices, some kimchi. They carry hot dogs (all beef were MEAT, right in the face), and buns. We have LOVED the Italian beef, so now it's chicken and Italian beef every (other) week or so. To sum up, I feel comfortable saying that Hofherr is like a second home now. Chat with the staff with what you're getting, and maybe try something you haven't before, because short of you being a newbie in the kitchen, you're gonna be fine. Places like this make my little carnivorous heart sigh. Unfortunately I don't visit them very often, because, as much as I love meat, I eat very little of it at home. So a visit to such an emporium is a rare and treasured indulgence. Hofherr boasts an impressive array of sausages--check the chalkboard and ask for anything that you don't see it in the case. All are made on the premises. I have to say that most of what I have tried has been good but not great. One of their best is the merguez, a peppy little Iberian treat. Italian sausage, quality but a little bland; the heat is there but not much other seasoning. Hard salami, again good but not as zingy as I like. Genoa salami, okay. Thuringer was very tasty but dried out a lot when fried in a skillet. Andouille was just plain dry. Kielbasa was among the best, but a bit salty. Those are all in the B range. A solid, knockout A is the bacon jalapeno cheeseburger bratwurst. That day, I was looking for nothing in particular, and one of the clerks sold me pretty hard on this sausage, which had recently won a trophy in some competition. I bought two, and cooked them in a skillet with some red onions. After the first two bites, I had three reactions: 1. I don't taste any jalapeno 2. I don't taste any bacon 3. However, I DEFINITELY taste cheeseburger In fact, it tasted exactly like a cheeseburger, so much so that I went to the fridge for some ketchup. After adding the condiment, it seemed perfect. I don't even like cheeseburgers that much, but this was probably the best sausage that I've had in years. One other note--these guys can make sandwiches with pretty much anything in the case. Unfortunately there are no toppings like lettuce, tomato, or onions; just meat, cheese, and a few sauces. But I have to say that they served up the best damn corned beef on rye this side of the Hudson River. read more

Update - Have had a couple of good experiences with special orders. Good quality product and friendly. Then another special order for a party put in on a tuesday for that saturday. Friday night get a message that they couldn't get what I needed - sounded like a supplier issue. but I'm still in the lurch with 40 people coming over. Saturday couple of suggestions for alternatives but no ability to source what I needed. Managed to find an alternative with 2 phone calls and a search on yelp. In my travels, I have sought the best butchers. I have easily visited 200 butchers. Hofherr's is the best for dried sausages and snack sticks. The single Best. Their other items are indeed all among the best too. They have fresh bread from Three Tarts and lots of pickles, sauces, cheese and even kimchi. I will be going back because supporting a small business like Hofherr is important to me. I have a hard time giving Hofherr's a good review. I found the staff to be pleasant and friendly, though that's about it. First, I have never been to a butcher shop that had so many items in the case in vacuum sealed plastic packaging. I like the traditional presentation in the case to be about the meat. Pick your item and have it weighed then wrapped in butcher paper. Great variety of sausages, all packed in plastic. No date on the package to let you know how fresh it is. No thanks. Second, I wanted Beef Short Ribs. The nice girl working the counter went in the back, and returned with a vacuum bagged pack of 12. Since I needed 16, she got 4 more, and wrapped them up for me. When I get home I realize the 4 pieces are much larger than the 12 pieces in the plastic packaging. It would have been nice to have them all the similar size for cooking and plating. Still irked by the plastic vacuum sealed package. To top it off, I was charged $10+ per pound for my Beef Short Ribs. You can find them nearly any where else for $6.50/lb. Do I feel ripped off? Yes, though shame on me. Lastly, I decided to try their homemade chicken salad. Pretty bland and tasteless. I spent over $100 on my first trip to Hofherr Meats. Overall, I was very disappointed, so i am sorry to say, it will be my last trip. read more

This place is the real deal and the only place we get meat for special occasions. All of their sausages are great. If you get the Best in Show, ensure you get the mustard that goes with it. We lived in Germany for a few years and Hofheer Meat has the best white brats outside of Germany. Get some of that kraut they have to go with them!
