Yelp Review 2026 #101: St. Leodegar Church is a historical Catholic church opened in the 1600s. It was linked to the Habsburgs and Benedictine monks. It's a very important church in Switzerland. It's been through war and fire. I suggest coming here either in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid tour groups and the occasional school field trip groups. It's quiet and empty. You can pray if you practice or just have a quiet moment. You can light a candle, grab a bottle of water for a little donation. read more

It's the church with the Gothic twin towers that you see from across the lake as you're crossing the bridge into Old Town. These towers were all that was left of the structure after the fire of 1633. The church was rebuilt on the original foundation in the Baroque style of architecture while retaining the medieval towers. I was more interested in the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Altar. I've never seen one like this before that visualizes the story of the Virgin Mary on her deathbed. I looked around for more information about it. It appears that this altar had also survived the fire. It dates back to some time in the early 1500s. It's definitely unique. The rest of the church is not as ornate. The vaulted white-stone ceilings and arches along with the dark wooden bench seats give it a nice contrast between light and dark. It's a beautiful church. One thing to note is that there are quite a few steps to climb if you want to visit the church. However, I did see a car at the top of the steps. Did someone drive it up the steps, or is there a path behind the church? I have no idea. It's worth looking into if you have limited mobility. There's a church cemetery garden as well as lovely fountain in the former abbey courtyard and square. It's a peaceful & breezy walk up there. It was a nice little visit on the way to the Lion Monument. read more

While wandering around Lucerne, we noticed the Church of St. Leodegar from a distance and decided to seek it out. We eventually found it on a bit of high ground (probably for flood protection), and fortunately it was still open. The church dates from 1633, and still houses an active Catholic parish. Lovely inside: old wooden pews in great condition, incredibly ornate alter area, a large, high area the priest can use for homilies, and an amazing ceiling. A quiet oasis in the midst of urbanity. read more

7/11/2024 - A large church near the water and you have to walk to a few steep steps to get inside. It was very slow inside the church. Great photos to take inside. There is a cemetery behind the church and the sides. A great looking building you will see if Lucern. See photos. Also, it is free. read more

This is a lovely church. A church yard wraps around the sides of the church with large cedar trees lending their scent to the setting. The interior is quite ornate with several altars around the perimeter. The churches I visited in Luzern had parishioners in the pews saying prayers so keeping silent and respectful while viewing the churches in town is necessary. The artwork here is heavy, lots of gold, iron work and dark wood. Definitely worth a visit while in Luzern. read more

Hofkirche is a beautiful Gothic church that dates back to the 12th Century. The grand main doors feature carvings of two patron saints of Luzern on either side. On the right is Saint Maurice, a Roman soldier, and on the left is Saint Leger, a French bishop who was blinded by a drill. In 1640, the massive organ was installed in the balcony. I love the black Gothic fencing that surrounds the alter and the violet drapery. To each side are ornate gold carvings depicting scenes of the church. Photography is permitted, but be careful not to walk onto the alter, which is roped off. Outside, there is a courtyard with an open shelter displaying headstones of the deceased. I've never seen a graveyard with hanging headstones before. This, plus the gorgeous architecture makes Hofkirche a must-see regardless of religious belief. Viewing Time: 45 minutes read more
