I had been looking forward to touring this Jones County attraction, so when my schedule opened up a free Thursday, I rearranged my schedule so that I could tour this property. I had called the listed phone number many times to set up an appointment, but never received a callback. I even called before I left that morning, and the recording said tours were available at 10am, 12pm, and 2pm, and cost $20 cash. I arrived at 1:36pm, only to find the gates shut. I called both numbers listed on the sign again and left more messages, but never heard back. I did notice a car and a truck parked outside the home. Thinking I was just too early, I drove past the property a few times, closer to 2 and at 2, but the gates were still shut. It is a beautiful property, but be warned: even if you follow their posted hours and instructions to the letter, there is no guarantee someone will actually be there to let you in. It may no longer be open for tours.

They conduct tours for $10 per adult. The guide was very well informed and offered not only the history of the home and the occupants, but some fun stories as well. You get an up close look at all the furnishings and a real feel for the era. We had toddlers and I wouldn't recommend this tour for small children. The tour is lengthy and you have to hold them while inside.

This is strictly for the police department. I understand that they don't have a yelp review page or anything like that. Totally understandable, but I just wanted to reach out and give the upmost valid comment on the departments at hand. When utilizing the courthouse and the courthouse system, they have been very polite, very respectful and on their regulations for ensuring safety and fairness for all people that go in and out of the court house.

This marker is located along the busy Marine Blvd that runs through Jacksonville. There is not much…read moreroom to stop to read the marker but I figured it out. The marker reads, "Edward B. Dudley, 1789-1855. Governor, 1836-41, the first in North Carolina elected by popular vote, first president of Wilmington and Weldon Railroad. Birthplace was 2 miles west." Online, there is more information. "In 1811 Dudley was elected to the first of two terms in the state House and in 1814 he returned as a state senator. During the War of 1812, he served as colonel of the Onslow militia that was sent to protect Wilmington against a threatened invasion. Shortly after the war Dudley moved to Wilmington and quickly rose to political prominence. He was elected as a borough representative to the legislature in 1816, 1817, and again in 1834 and 1835. Since one political party dominated North Carolina politics between 1815 and 1832, Dudley was designated a Republican, but he disagreed with national leadership. Elected to fill the seat in Congress vacated by the death of Gabriel Holmes in 1829, he found his views incompatible with those of President Andrew Jackson and his followers. Dismayed by the tactics of the president and the compromising nature of the Congress, Dudley refused to run for a second term." "Dudley's return home coincided with a groundswell in the movement to awaken North Carolina from its "Rip Van Winkle" slumber. He assumed a pivotal role in the formation of the Whig party that challenged the Democratic leadership by supporting constitutional reform, stronger banks, railroad construction and other internal improvements, and education. In 1836 he hosted in his Wilmington home the committee that organized the Wilmington and Raleigh Railroad." "Dudley's administration initiated a period of progress. We arrived at the AOH Museum right as they opened. We were greeted by the museum curator who was a simply delightful man who gave us the warmest of welcomes. He told us it was a self-guided tour and handed us the written information for the tour. He added that he was available for answers to any questions we had. We started in the dining room. Before I go on, I should share that I'm a psychic medium and any historical spots usually are interesting for me. Anyhow, two or three steps in I sensed someone standing to my left. I thought it was interested in my boyfriend so I walked from the spot. No, this spirit was walking with me. I walked into the hallway where we started and was greeted by another staff member who was super friendly and accommodating. The three of us chatted about the area and the building. I finally asked if there was anything "unusual " about the building. She felt I meant structural. So my boyfriend simply said, "spirits". She immediately referenced a woman named Miss Mary. I pointed to my left and whispered, "she is standing right here" as I pointed to my left. The guide seemed delighted. We continued walking throughout the building and we were joined by the curator once again while he was told what I was and what I was getting. He too was thrilled and pointed out amazing and interesting facts about the building and the people associated with it throughout its history. The curator did not have to stop and spend such wonderful time with us. I was honored as he spoke with such passion and love for his work. I could go on about the things that I "picked up" but I'll save that for future visitors. We were overwhelmed with the hospitality and kindness of the curator and staff as they made us feel welcome. I won't forget this visit...ever.

Despite the small size of the county, it has an impressively large courthouse. The Jones County Courthouse was completed in 1939 and is the third to serve after each of the earlier ones were destroyed by fire. It is a two-story Flemish bond brick and concrete structure with a symmetrical façade featuring six vertical pillars and a wide pediment at the roofline. A white cupola crowns the center of the roof. Jones County is named for Willie Jones, who opposed the ratification of the United States Constitution and declined an invitation to the Constitutional Convention. The county was officially formed in 1779, carved from Craven County and later expanded with portions of Carteret and Dobbs Counties. The town of Trenton became the county seat in 1784, originally known as Trent Bridge. There is easy street parking in Trenton, just be sure to look for marked spaces. There's a peaceful bicycle trail that runs through the area, making it a great place to ride or walk. The September 11 memorial, featuring a beam from the World Trade Center, is especially powerful. The Battle of Newport Barracks Civil War Memorial in Downtown Newport represents the life at a…read moremilitary barracks during the Civil War. Admission is free but they do accept donations. A parking lot is available as well. The Newport Barracks was a Civil War Outpost that guarded a railroad trestle bridge. The railroad was used as a supply line to get supplies and equipment to New Bern. 900 Union soldiers tried to hold off 2500 Confederate soldiers who were there from Wilmington trying to regain control over New Bern. They fought for over ten hours before retreating but set fire to the depot and the railroad and bridges to destroy equipment and supplies. .

This is a great representation of a Civil War Confederate Camp. They have a cannon, several tents…read moreand other items from camp life. I especially like the cooking examples as well as the wash area and blacksmith shop. They have buildings there made of local materials and with craftmanship which has withstood the test of time. I will take some of these ideas home to put into practice in my own yard. The demonstration camp is a sobering reminder of the hard work and ultimate sacrifice Americans gave during this turbulent time in our history. Remembering is important. This camp provides and opportunity for Americans and visitors of all ages to see back in time and reflect. Well worth the time while in Newport, whose old town has other treasures to discover!
