This is a teeny tiny place where you can pull off the side of the road to (limited parking at the actual Dell but street parking nearby) to spot some Glowworms! You should only come either at sunset or later as you cannot see the worms glow without darkness. For safety you could bring a small flashlight or headlamp or just use the flashlight from your smartphone for the under 5 minute walk from the parking area to the dell itself. We went in February and unfortunately there weren't too many glow worms present but considering this was free, depends entirely on the insects themselves and took less than 10 minutes, we weren't upset at all. Definitely a quick pit stop I'd recommend if you're in or near Hokitika regardless! This path isn't entirely flat so I think it would be challenging for those with mobility issues such as wheelchair users. read more

We continued to be amazed by the natural wonders in NZ - that you can see for free! Just across the road from our accommodations in Hokitika is a glow worm dell - a forest area known for glow worm viewings at night. It's free to enter, with a short dirt path up to the dell. Go after dark at night, and you'll get to see a forest area teeming with glow worms lighting up the night. You have to keep all lights off and be silent which was hard for some tourists to do, but it was incredible to be able to spend as much time as you wanted here, and take photos (without flash) of glow worms - something you can't do at the glow worm caves in the south. This glow worm dell is located opposite the Shining Star Beachfront Accomodation. It is on the lefthand side of the highway, there is a small footpath that lead to the dell. Entry to the glow worm dell is free. There is an information board about the insect and its lifecycle. Best to visit during dusk or when it's dark. It is best to bring a torch as the path is dark. You'll be able to recognise the glow worms as the sides are covered with little globes of light. The dell is worth a trip if you're in Hokitika. read more
