Not many independent theatre companies or venues in Adelaide, amazing really when you consider the amount of kudos it seeks as a "festival city" but some spaces are out there and although they are a little obscure they are fine venues for theatre when it comes down to it.
A particularly interesting venue situation is the Holden Street Theatres, with a couple of venues in the same little complex. Directly beside the Hindmarsh Stadium, these theatres are inside old church buildings from years past. I have seen some very interesting shows here, and also some dreadful tripe. That's the chance you always take when it comes down to it.
Going out to the theatre can be a great experience or it can be a bit of a dull dud.
You may end up with a dull bum sitting on the less than luxurious seats at either the Holden Street Theatre or The Arch, and you may get a stiff neck in The Arch because neither stage or seating is raked, meaning it is all flat and not always comfortable to see depending on where you are and who is in front of you.
There is also the lottery factor of local theatre; many local actors suddenly appear in one person shows or shows that are really a little far out of their reach as performers as they attempt to capitalise on the festival by throwing on a show, and they may as well have stayed under the rock they crept out from in the end; but there are some wonderful shows that come and go.
Many of them here at these very theatres, so if you feel like the gamble, and usually it's around the twenty dollar mark, try out Holden Street. If nothing else you'll have an amusing adventure that hopefully will leave you inspired. read more
