The food menu is small, but more than adequate. One of us had a burger, which was thick in every sense, making it hard to get your mouth around, but very good. Another had the Croque Monseiur which was good, but not to be compared to those in France. The third had a club sandwich and said it was excellent. Service was good, although it was almost an hour from when we walked in until food was on the table.

Driving down from our cabin we were excited to get to Fagernes to treat ourselves to dining out. Fantabulous customer service! I ordered the spare ribs, my father had the steak with Bearnaise and my mother ate the house special of fish and chips. Portions were more then generous and very large. My ribs were excellent, the meat melted off the bone and they even had a sprinkling of rock sea salt which just enhanced all the flavors. Next to the bar is homemade bread that you can snack on before the main course, we enjoyed the spelt bread and carrot bread. If we hadn't been so full we would have bought 11 loafs of bread. Free coffee and tea too! The owners are Danish and on the weekends they hold service in their restaurant. Although I'm not a church goer I value this quirky addition, warm fire, fun art work and the owners feel like family. The hallingstuenes nevamat was excellent, and each of the four miniature dishes were artfully presented. The trout was a bit overcooked, but the sauce was perfect and the accompaniments were delicious. Overall, I would highly recommend Hallingstuene for a Norwegian dinner in Geilo if you don't mind a bit of a wait.
