I believe the most famous Colonial Country Club is the one in Fort Worth followed by Cordova, Tennessee (outside of Memphis). Both have hosted PGA Tour events with the former also hosting both a men's and women's US Open major championship. While this Colonial Country Club in North Carolina may not have that kind of history or prestige, it's still a nice, private club nonetheless and I found it to be real treat to play on. My dad and I had planned to play one of our usual rounds at his home club, High Point Country Club (Willow Creek golf course). However, because of a tournament at Willow Creek, we played here instead because the clubs have a reciprocal agreement in place. This was my first visit to Colonial, but not for my dad. He's played Colonial several times over the years with other High Point Country Club members for various reasons, reciprocity being one and tournaments, I believe, being another. He and my mom have also attended holiday parties at the clubhouse for Thomasville Medical Center. The day of my visit, the clubhouse and course were setting up for a wedding. The wedding ceremony took place on the scenic lakeside 16th fairway and it appeared the dinner reception was inside the clubhouse: https://www.instagram.com/p/COWFnSjhkP5/. Before playing any "new" course (new to me), I like to do a little research. For Colonial, I checked out their website, Facebook, and Instagram. Having lived in Atlanta for the past 20 years, playing golf in metro Atlanta, and following many Atlanta area golf courses on social media, I noticed something immediately when I looked at Colonial's IG -- the club is now managed by Atlanta-based Bobby Jones Links. The dead giveaways were the pictures of the staff members who were awarded Clover Leaf (employee of the month) awards. They do the same thing at courses I follow in Georgia like Bobby Jones Golf Course, Legacy and Fox Creek, and Cobblestone. What a small world. In general, I think Bobby Jones Links has done a great job on the social media front. Their shirts look nice too. There are scenic views shortly after driving onto the property at Colonial. The course features three lakes (Upper, Middle, and Lower). On the front nine, starting with the 5th green, you get great views of Upper Lake. The 6th hole, par 4, has a blind uphill tee shot which I was not a fan of (I don't like blind shots). Upper Lake comes into play on the 8th hole, par 3, which measures 178 from the tips (blues). No. 9 is dogleg left par 5. On that hole, you'll want to err right on your drive because the fairway slopes right-to-left. I sliced my drive to the right side of the fairway and it rolled down to the center, putting me in great position for my next shot. As far as the back nine is concerned, I thought the tee box for 10 was a little confusing for a first-timer with the way the boxes are positioned between 12 green, the practice short game area, and 13 tee, plus the way the cart path goes. No. 10 is also a par 5 so it's hard to see exactly where you're supposed to hit. Anyway, that's just a minor gripe. The 10th green is tucked away in a corner so you do need to set yourself up for a good look by hitting a decent second shot. Holes 16 and 17 are some of the most picturesque and beautiful on the course. A par 4, 16 bends left around Lower Lake while 17, a par 3, is similar to 8 on the front, with a forced carry over water, but significantly less water to cover. The front ends dogleg left, the back dogleg right (par 4), both finishing at the clubhouse. Colonial opened in 1958. There are five sets of tees. From the tips, the course measures 6,809 yards with a 72.3/126 rating/slope. Not too long nor difficult, relatively speaking. When we played, the conditions were very good overall. Both the tee boxes and greens were in excellent shape. The greens were firm and fast. The only thing I didn't like about them was you could clearly see where numerous holes had been previously cut (just me being picky). Parts of some fairways could have used some work, but generally, there were no glaring issues maintenance-wise to me. It was what I expected out of a private country club in Thomasville. As far as layout and design, aside from the aforementioned water holes, I do think the holes are a bit simplistic and lack creativity or variety. Many of the fairways and greens are huge and there aren't a whole lot of trees separating holes. That makes Colonial very playable and more enjoyable for high-handicap golfers like my dad and me. Most holes do not have homes on them, so in that sense, this course feels more secluded and pure which I like. There's a pool, tennis courts, locker rooms and showers in the clubhouse, and two air blowers to clean your shoes. Service was terrific. The staff was friendly.

I enjoyed my time here and, in general, I think this is a great resort for the Triad (Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point). I was born and raised in High Point and remember when Grandover opened in 1999. After 27 years, I finally got to visit. From the golf course to the hotel, I could tell the property has seen better days (e.g., details in course conditioning and building maintenance). As I wrote in my review for the golf course separately, this is not uncommon for golf facilities that were built during the last golf course boom in the 80s and 90s. The hotel is still quite nice, though, and is on the higher, more luxurious end. I checked the 2026 listing of AAA Four Diamond hotels and Grandover is still on the list, along with the O.Henry Hotel, Proximity Hotel, and Kimpton Cardinal Hotel as the only four hotels in the Triad with that status. Cocktail hour and dinner took place in the Grandville Ballroom. I guesstimate there were about 150-175 attendees. The ballroom worked well for this event, including all A/V aspects. The buffet-style dinner was delicious; in particular, the short rib and cobbler. The bartenders at the hotel bar, 1808 Bar (named after the year the city of Greensboro was founded), were initially overwhelmed with the post-dinner rush. The bar appeared to be decently stocked and my drink, the Hugo Spritz (St-Germain, champagne, club soda) was refreshing. 1808 Bar is located right in front of the hotel restaurant, Finial. I stayed in Room 421, on the fourth floor, with a view of the fountains, parking lot, and a stretch of I-85 which I have driven on countless times over the years. I really liked my room. It was luxe and spacious. Consistent with resorts in this tier, some of the finer features included robes (no logo, though), a nice mini bar, personalized TV guest screen, and rain shower head. The bed was super comfy. The cost for one night was $249. After sales tax (6.75%) and occupancy tax (6%), the total was $280.75. The room charge was "resort fee exempt," so it was discounted from a normal stay since I stayed with a group. Service was professional and speedy. The bellhops were particularly welcoming, friendly, and eager to serve. The art gallery and golf mural rotunda are neat. My only criticism is that after golf, everyone tried to shower at the same time, which meant no hot water for many. I waited a long time for my shower water to heat up. However, the next morning when I took another shower, the water heated up in a normal amount of time. I've always preferred Oak Hollow to Blair Park and I think a lot of other golfers do too simply because Oak Hollow is situated on a lake and has more scenic views. Blair Park is situated just south of downtown in a more urban and populated part of town. The course's 18 holes surround a neighborhood of single-family homes. In contrast, there are zero homes at Oak Hollow Golf Course. Also, Oak Hollow was designed by famous golf architect Pete Dye. Blair Park, which originally opened as a 9-hole course in 1931, has no designer of note. The second 9 was added to this muni during the 1940s. Where Blair Park wins is value. Currently, the most you'll have to pay for 18 holes riding is $30 (weekends before 12pm). What a deal. In terms of course conditions, you get what you pay for. In my experience, the course has been in acceptable shape with good greens. The grill inside the clubhouse offers weekday specials that include an entree (e.g. burger, chicken tenders, two hot dogs), side (e.g. chips, fries), and fountain drink for only $6. It's hard to beat that. That said, the course isn't much to look at. It's a relatively boring 18 holes. There's not a whole lot of variety from hole to hole. Bunkers are sparse and there are no bodies of water. There is a creek or two that run through the course, but that's it. You'll run into beautiful sets of power lines and/or utility towers on certain holes. There are elevation changes, but they are minor. The course is short and comparatively easy. Therefore, it's a great place for all skill levels to play. The course measures only 6,009 yards from the men's tees and 6,449 yards from the tips. Unfortunately, there is no driving range which can make warming up a challenge. At least there's a practice putting green. One of my fondest memories of Blair Park was getting cut from my high school's golf team my freshman year (High Point Central). I like to say we had a really good golf team that year (we actually did), but really I sucked. Nothing like chunking a fairway wood during a practice round in front of your coach and team's best player. A couple other heartwarming memories I have during my high school days here are: (1) Getting honked at by people in cars driving by. They were intentionally trying to disrupt our rounds. (2) Two of my friends literally getting mugged on the course. I believe the robbery happened on the front nine. I wasn't there to witness it, but the team definitely heard about it. Good times.

We live across the street from this course and over the decades have received many and expensive damages and close calls with being hit. There have been 3 honest people who came and admitted to hitting our vehicles and paid for the damage. This is extremely dangerous. We've had a car totaled, our bay window shattered, back car windows shattered, a magnitude of dents. We had a friend get hit in the ankle with a ball. I was almost hit in the head by a ball etc. You'll hear the balls hitting things. You'll see the balls flying across both nearby streets, bouncing down the streets. Today another ball hit our car & rolled into the street. We can barely have company because our family/friends are afraid of being hit! The picture is only a small fraction of all the balls that have come unto our property. I called the office and it's the same nonsense. If the person acknowledges then great, if not, which is the majority, then you've got to file it on your own insurance, and/or call the police and make a report. Office guy said there's been court cases where the outcome is the same. When someone gets seriously injured or killed from being struck by these balls, will this course and the city spew the same insidious BS?! 3:18 pm today 3/16/2023, Another golf ball just hit in our driveway right in front of my spouse's friend's car!! They were outside working on the car. Really! What the hell?! My spouse shouted to let them know and as usual they kept moving on in the golf cart. I played Grandover Resort's East Course this past Tuesday, September 15, 2026. The course was about…read morewhat I expected based on the rates I saw online. Like many facilities built during the last golf course boom of the late 80s and 90s, I think Grandover has seen better days. The way they've let some of the conditions go - especially the bunkers - was a telltale sign to me. That said, I still think this is a solid public course for the Triad. Grandover has two 18-hole courses. The East Course opened in 1996 and the West Course opened in 1997. The East Course is the more difficult, "championship" course. The West Course is more forgiving. At the time of writing this review (September 18, 2026), weekend morning tee times (peak rates) are as follows: * East Course: $100 for 18 holes, $60 for 9 holes * West Course: $101 for 18 holes, $61 for 9 holes It's nice they offer a 9-hole option on the weekends. I found the East Course to have an interesting, challenging, and scenic design. To me, it's a classic Southern course with hills, slopes, and undulations, along with water hazards and plenty of "bunkers." Some of the prettier holes include No. 4, with its covered bridge and yellow flowers, and No. 18, with the water feature and resort building near the green. The greens and fairways were in good shape, for the most part. Some of the tee boxes were in poor condition. I could tell they've scaled back on maintenance details over the years, perhaps because the resort hasn't done as well as was projected in the late 90s. The clock near the practice putting green and driving range was faded. Fortunately, I saw a guy on a lift touching it up as we made the turn. The E-Z-GO ELiTE golf carts were mid-tier, but had GPS. The golf shop was relatively nice and appeared to be well stocked. The mural on the rotunda inside is cool. Service from the staff was good. I will say the facilities are set up well to handle large events. I attended a golf tournament fundraiser with about 140 players, shotgun start, and everything seemed to go smoothly. I rented a set of clubs for $75, paid for inside the golf shop. The rental set was very good and included the following clubs: * Titleist GT2 woods: driver (10 degrees), 3-wood (15), and 4-hybrid * Titleist T350 irons: 5-iron through 43-degree PW * Vokey SM11 wedges: 48, 52, 56, and 60 degrees * Scotty Cameron putter: Special Select Squareback 2 The rental set also included two sleeves of Srixon Soft Feel balls with the Grandover logo and a bunch of Grandover tees in the bag. I took pictures of the scorecard and uploaded them here on Yelp so you can see the course ratings and slopes for both the East Course and West Course. I didn't see them on Grandover's website. Went to HPCC for Christmas Eve dinner. I couldn't believe how busy it was. We heard two different…read morenumbers for attendance. One staff member told us 750 guests were expected, another said over 900. Either way, it was a ton of people. Every single room in the Emerywood clubhouse was filled. There were long lines for the buffets, one set up in each hallway. The parking lot was full, so people were parking on the grass and in the street. I've never seen it so busy! I thought we're still supposed to be in a recession. The clubhouse was decked out for the holidays. A big "Happy Holidays" ice sculpture with changing lights was set up inside the entrance. At the ends of either hallway were two giant, well-decorated Christmas trees. Smaller Christmas trees were positioned in various rooms. A group of Christmas Carolers walked around and sang. They were dressed in traditional English attire and sounded great. Santa Claus was also present and he was quite an authentic-looking one, from beard to costume. The kiddies LOVED him. I almost wanted to get a picture with him, but I didn't want to stand in line with all the little munchkins. Because it was so crowded, the tables were really packed in, especially in the grill room. This made it difficult to maneuver in certain spots. Maybe they can improve upon this next Christmas. I'm not sure if they expected this many people to show up. I don't remember all of the foods, but some of the spread included three different kinds of salads, casseroles, stuffing, macaroni and cheese, green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy, and freshly sliced prime rib, ham, and turkey. The dessert bar consisted of a variety of pies and ice cream. Pecan pie FTW. Generally, the food was good, as it normally is. I'm pretty sure the staff was at full force on Monday night. Everyone was incredibly polite and warm welcoming, even though they had to work on Christmas Eve. Kudos to them. Overall, I had a wonderful experience at HPCC's Christmas Eve dinner.
