I had my flashing check engine light appear plus my AWD was disengaged and my 2016 Toyota Highlander was driving atypically. I called Holy Land and was encouraged to drop by. Strangely enough, when I started at my car, everything seemed to be back to normal, but I was still skeptical and I figured I'd take it in anyway. Joe was on it immediately and determined that there was no big deal that it was a glitch because of the weather most likely. He also did a few diagnostic tests just to double check and also recommended a new battery. This is all done when I was waiting there, and he was extremely nice and informative throughout the entire process. I wound up leaving with a new battery and 100% confidence in my car. Fast, affordable work. We brought in an old Ford, and the brakes were shot. We needed new pads, calipers, the works. The price Joe quoted me was literally $500 cheaper than the dealership, and instead of the three days the dealership said it would take, they had it done in a few hours. I'm not sure I can ask for much more than that. I guess if you want me to complain about things, I can always do that: 1. The sign out front says "Holly" Land Auto Repair, but I was able to figure out that it was the right place. I'm pretty smart. 2. They left my windows open on a nice fall day, and some leaves got in. I had a slow leak in my coolant but no traces of leakage. I took my car in. They said it was the coolant reservoir. I was doubtful but he seemed sure. Charged me 400 (!!!) for a new reservoir. A few days later it was still leaking at the same rate with no traces. Took it to another shop. Bad water pump and a cracked head gasket between cylinder 1 & 2. Repaired, now the car is running perfectly and holding its coolant. The head gasket was a big bill, but it was necessary. The reservoir these guys bilked me for was rip off. They lie and overcharge. Took my car in today thinking I knew what was wrong. Even gave him the part to fix it. Joe called me inside of an hour to let me know it was actually rats that had chewed through the wires! That's what I get for parking on Warren Street for weeks on end. Only charged me 50 bucks extra even though he had to take the front of the car apart and rewire everything. What a gent. Just take Care! I paid more than $800.oo dollars to repair a misfire on the engine. Very weird but I paid. They said I will have 6 warranty months about it, but 15 days later I still have the same trouble. I went yesterday and the owner "Joe" said: Oh, I'm sorry: Go to another mechanic because I'm not specialist in this kind of brands, So... Where are the 6 months Warranty? I have been going there a for a few years and every time I had the car inspected the owner wanted to "fix" something in order for my car to pass the inspection. I have an older car, so I thought maybe it does need the "fixing." I decided not to go there ever again was when I needed brighter headlights. I was quoted one price at the beginning, but the next time I was quoted a price that was extra $60. I questioned the mechanic about the difference of the price quoted by him, and he said everything was getting expensive. In ONE WEEK? For the same bulbs and same service he raised the price $60 extra. That's dishonest and I will never trust them again. read more

I was on my way to Staten Island when my work vehicle started to violently shake. I didn't know what was going on, but seeing the check engine light appear I decided to head back to base. I spoke to payroll and discovered that last mechanic we used was terminated, because of spotty work practices. So it was up to me to find a new account. Great! Just add on to my work load. However I found a place close with great reviews. And if the name "Holy Land Auto Repair" doesn't scream honesty, than what would. I spoke to the owner over the phone and he told me to bring the my car. After a quick drive, I reached the shop. It was small and just one tunnel, able to fit about six cars inside. The owner came up to me and greeted me. He asked for my keys and trouble shot my vehicle with some sort of device. Once he got the trouble code he told me the issue and a average price. I agreed and told him where I worked. After he paused and changed his pricing and gave me a higher quote. I was cautious, but couldn't afford to keep moving the car. I left it and in a few hours it was ready. He charged me the higher quote and most of the bill was labor. I paid and drove the car. I'm happy with the work, the vehicle is running excellent. However, I don't like the feeling of being taken advantage of even if it's not the case. I will try them again in the future, just next time, I will get the quote in writing. read more

Made the mistake of bringing my car to Holy Land for an inspection. They knew my sticker had expired so I could no longer street park and was desperate. As soon as the owner asked me for the lug nut key and told me to leave the car I knew I was in trouble. Of course 30 minutes later I got the dreaded call telling me know that the car needed new brakes. I went over everything with him and he showed me the wear. The pads weren't soft or grinding or cracked and still had 3-4mm left on them which I assumed meant they were road worthy. He disagreed and told me he was going to fail the car for safety unless I paid for an expensive brake job. I declined, paid for the emissions inspection and took the car to Pep Boys for a second opinion. As I suspected, my brakes were fine (as far as the DMV regulations are concerned) and the car passed inspection the second time with no issues. This place may be fine for other work but if you bring your car in for an inspection you may wind up getting blackmailed. read more

Don't use this place to get an inspection! Sent my wife to Holy Land to get an inspection on her fairly new Honda CRV, because the shop is in the neighborhood. They told her she needed new rear brake rotors and pads to pass inspection. After talking to me about it, she told the guy there is no pulsing or noises when braking and he said ok, she just needs to replace pads to pass inspection. I just looked at the rear brake rotors on her car and they look almost new. Almost no wear, no grooving or warping, they just lied to her to make some $. Buyer beware read more

my check engine light came on so I was ready to spend thousands of dollars if need be. I have to drive my kids to track practice every day so I was desperate. I got to the shop right 8am, I brought books with me to ready im ready for an all day affair. The guy comes out checks the light. Says the gas cap wasn't placed on properly, checked a few other things and said the car was ready to go. The whole situation took 3 minutes and was totally free. THIS IS THE MOST HONEST REAPIR MAN EVER I always get nervous going to a repair place. Yet, every time I'm here, even though I mention some issues with the car, Joe often tells me I can ignore something or let it wait. Unlike other guys, he isn't trying to screw me over. Last week, he offered to fix some wiring, and when I brought it back in today, he made the quick fix and did it for free. My mind is blown. We recently moved to the area and I wanted to give this place around the corner from us a try for an inspection we had to complete. I left the car and was told it needed $800 worth of work to pass the inspection. I would have paid but my husband, having just gotten an oil change a few months back at our regular shop and not having done much driving since, was skeptical. So I took the car to a our regular shop and they told me that we passed the inspection without any work but recommended the breaks replaced in the near future. Regarding the other work, although technically required by the book (manual), it didn't have to be done just yet as there were no issues with that part in our vehicle. We are not mechanics but it seems that almost 1k of suggested work was being sold as required which is not optimal. read more

Not too happy with my experience here last Friday- the repair guy didn't call me (like he said he would) to verify whether or not I needed new rotors along w/ new brake pads, I had to call him to ask (No new rotors just brake pad replacement). After the brake job was done, he did not give me the old brake pads (like most reputable shops do) to show me the work was really finished. This morning when I stepped on my brakes, of course I hear the grinding sound which brought me into this shop in the first place- meaning they didn't do a good job/no job was done. When I went to pay that day at around 5:30 pm ($170 for inspection and brake pads replacement) I asked him if he also did the repair I requested and authorized on my reverse light wiring and he said he needed more time- Well, you could've told me that over the phone, buddy. I dropped off the car at 2pm, spoke to you at 3pm, so you had 3 hours with my car and you never called to tell me that you couldn't do the wiring? I hate incompetent people. Also people who rip you off. Caveat emptor .. let the buyer beware. read more

Moving from the Bronx to Brooklyn, i had to find a place for my auto repairs that can compare to the Dominicans I went to on Webster Ave in the Bronx. i have never complained about any of the mechanics on Webster, everything was always done right and dirt cheap as long as a woman you can handle the horny spanish cat calls the men give you which is typical anyways. Willing to share my business with Brooklyn, i tried Holy Land Auto a couple of times. Oil Change : $30, this is my first and last time I will do this here, I can change my oil in the Bronx for $20 and get a free carwash, vaccum and a sticker to tell me when I can go back for the next one, this place doesn't even give you a sticker. Brakes: $120, for brake pads you serious? I can get them done at the same place that does my oil and car wash in the Bronx for $79. They also try to tell me that I needed a new exhaust for $150. I paid a guy $70 and got an official Nissan part. Overall they're ok, I guess because they see I'm a woman automatically they think I don't know anything about cars. Well this pretty ladies does and she ain't spending money on a job that she can get cheaper else where. I'll only go here if my car truely can't make it up to the Bronx, besides that it's not worth it, save your pennies. read more

My fiance insisted that the mechanic I (Ms. No Concept of Auto Repair) was taking our car to was ripping us off, so he chose to take it to Holy Land for our NYS inspection and to look under the hood for why our "Check Engine" light was on. They said that we had some valve on/by the gas tank that was damaged and needed to be replaced. All in all, the job was under $250, and he was feeling very good about his decision. He drove the car the 2 miles back to our apartment with no problem. The next day, a rainy Sunday, we had plans to go see my folks on Staten Island. We were on the BQE and he was telling me, once again, how amazing Holy Land was, when suddenly, the car choked and died - luckily we were already in the right lane when it came to a complete halt. We waited about half an hour for the police and a tow truck, in the car in the rain, praying nobody crashed into us. The tow truck driver, a true Brooklyn character, took us back to Holy Land and parked the car out front, so my fiance could head over there on Monday morning to have it looked at. We had been telling the tow truck driver about the prior day's repair, and he guessed that the gas lines hadn't been hooked back up. Sure enough, we get to Holy Land, he asks "Do you want me to fix it?" He pops open the hood, connects the line back to the engine, and POOF, the engine is fixed. WTF Holy Land!!! Shoddy, careless work!!! We will be going to another mechanic next time. read more

These guys are great. I've gotten two state inspections from them which went fine. Today, however, I took my car in for three separate problems. The AC was only working on the highest setting (I correctly self-diagnosed this as a busted blower motor resistor), my driver's side back window was off its track and kept slipping down into the door inch by inch, and the car was just louder than usual when it was in motion. I was bracing myself for about $700 in repairs. I dropped my car off at 8:45 this morning and got a call around 12:15 with the damage. My blower motor resistor was in fact dead and needed to be replaced, which would cost $120. Fixing the window would be $200. And the loudness was due to something scraping against the muffler, which they fixed for free! So what I thought might cost $700 ended up being just under $350 including tax. It was a great relief. These guys are really nice and I've never gotten an impression from them that they're trying to screw me over. They fix what needs fixing and then get you out. I definitely recommend them if you need some work done in NYC. read more

I went to this shop for an oil change based on yelper reviews and was pleasantly surprised. Joe, the owner is incredibly genuine and helpful. My belt was loose and I asked him if he could tighten it. He told me it would cost $45 and he will do it if he had time. When I came to pick up the car, he let me know that he did have time and that it was way easier than he thought on my car and only charged me 20 for the belt. That's an honest mechanic and difficult to find these days. I know I'll be back and recommend other to this shop. read more

Reflecting back on my dealings with Holy Land, I have no idea why I didn't give them a 5 star before (maybe because I thought that giving 5 would make me seem soft? I have no clue). Really, these guys are that amazing and invaluable asset everyone wants but can't necessarily find --- honest and skilled car mechanics. Shortly after I wrote my initial review of Holy Land these guys helped me to navigate some super next-level shady shenanigans at Bay Ridge. These guys correctly determined that there was an issue with the car computer and told me there was a recall so Toyota should replace it for free. This advice was at no charge. Took it to Bay Ridge and they tried to tell me nothing was wrong. Then they tried to charge me to look at it and verify. Went back to Holy Land, they told me to stand firm because they were certain it was the computer. Went back to Bay Ridge and had to throw down (they actually tried to intimidate me by teaming up on me but the advice from Holy Land helped me to stand firm) and eventually, after threatening to write to BBB and Toyota, they relented and did what they were supposed to do --- fix my car. Seriously, among the many things I miss about life in NYC is oddly enough having the team at Holy Land as my mechanics. I needed a few things done to my car including getting it inspected. It was going to be my first time using a general mechanic since I moved to Brooklyn so I did what everybody does...I went to the internet. That's when I came across Holy Land Auto Repair. What stood out for me were the dozens of glowing reviews. There was one review written about 4 years ago where the writer said that he got a ticket after Holy Land parked his car, which was repaired and the review was very satisfied, and that Holy Land reimbursed him! After that review and many others I figured that all of those reviewers cannot be wrong so I was all in. I took my car there on Tuesday June 4 2012 with a list of about 10 things that I wanted to get done, the most important of which was getting my car (2002 Ford Focus) inspected and fixing my A/C. Also on my list was the problem that I have with the ignition cylinder which requires me to tap the key with a rubber mallet in order to be able to turn the key. I dropped my car off at 8 am sharp and Joe called me at ten past 9 (I just checked my cell phone to confirm the time) to explain that he would need to replace my driver's side mirror assembly in order for me to pass the inspection. I gave him the go-ahead and spoke to him about some other things (I also told him how I found about him and his impecible reputation) and he called me back at 11:47 and gave me the "damage." Changing the air filter, oil filter, fule filter, replacing the mirror assembly with a brand new one and the inspection was going to cost about $280. I reminded him about the A/C and he said that he was going to check it out and call me back. You see, I went to Jiffy Lube back in late spring 2010 and they charged it and disclaimed any and all responsibility if it stopped working. I told Joe about this and he tested and charged my A/C and told me that it held pressure and he did not see a leak but to be sure, he put a dye in the A/C and told me to bring it back if it stopped working and if there was a leak he would be able to see it by way of the dye escaping. The total bill, including taxes, was $378! As far as I'm concerned that was a bargain for two reasons: first, Joe was informative and responsive and explained what he was going to do and why he felt it needed to be done. Second, there were other things that I thought needed to be fixed and he thought that it could wait. I don't think that another mechanic would do that. I believed that he saved me some money and plan to go back there later this summer to have the arm rest and the ignition cylinder replaced. I brought a blower resistor to Joe because the switch on my fan only worked on 4 and when I turned the selector to 1, 2 or 3 there was nothing. He didn't have to use that part that I brough and I'm sure that he took a small loss in not buying the part himself. I spoke to him that afternoon and told him about the glowing reviews; he seemed humbled but professed his desire to deliver superior service with the knowledge that that would bring in other customers. He's right. I bought my car used in 2004 and plan to keep it until 2014 - ten damn years! And if I am going to do that, I'll be bringing my car to Joe! Thank you, Joe! Andre read more
