This guy was a joke. I heard he was good at his craft, but that must have been many moons ago. I…read moretook some beloved antique furniture pieces to him for repair. Not only does he NOT do any work, he leaves that work to a couple of back end guys who, after receiving my pieces back, not only lack the attention and detail to the repairs, but the repairs were simply shoddy and hurried with no care given to the furniture at all. One piece that they were supposed to reconstruct and stabilize came back to me with the side coming off the dresser, literally, they did not do the work I paid for. They loaded the piece before I could inspect it, but I trusted them. Never again. And on the day I picked up the furniture, I ENTRUSTED JIM with an original 1880 oak spindle from my front staircase to have it turned and duplicated. The guy LOST IT!!!!! HE LOST IT!!! But was he upfront to let me know this??? NO! He dodged my calls, went hunting, gave me excuses and then when I became irate in like my 8th call over a three month period, he states that he gave it to this guy up the road that is 94 years old to turn for me. WHAT???? So, again, he doesn't do any of this work, he either lets his cronies in a back building do it or he hands it off to the elusive "94 year old up the road" who he admitted "forgets where he puts things". OMG. What a horrid experience all around. So now my beautiful 1880 staircase that was only missing one spindle, is not missing two. And this guy just shuns his responsibility and accountability. As far as his antique shop, I can't say either way. I'm only reviewing his furniture repair. Steer clear.

On one of our weekend road trips, we were sidetracked by a cute sign that read "Louisiana,…read moreMissouri." Since we weren't going to be anywhere near the state of Louisiana anytime soon, we decided to stop. What a great decision! The town is one of the typical small towns you can find in rural Missouri. There's always a business section where there are your usual fast food joints, a small grocery store, city hall etc. There are different sections of town which run the gamut, from very humble, smaller homes to grander, more palatial homes that looked like drs., lawyers, mayors must have built them back in the day. I am always on a hunt for a great thrift store and lo and behold, there was one right on the main drag. Sporting a brand new, brightly colored sign which reads "Thrift Store" Miss Murrel and Mr. Jim the owners, had recently opened for business. Apparently Mr. Jim is the owner of the entire block and was the owner of what was once an automotive shop which stood in the same area. Miss Murrel told me that story of how he had owned that business for many years but decided to retire and give his wife the building to run her dream, a thrift store. But it's not really just a thrift store and Miss Murrel and Mr. Jim are not just owners of a wonderfully messy, interesting, eclectic, curious little shop. It's a shop that is filled with history, a former business run by a husband and wife for many years that became a staple of the small town. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with genuine hospitality and a very warm vibe. True to my nosy nature, I began asking Miss Murrell about her shop, how long she had been there, etc. It turns out that Mr. Jim is a Korean veteran and in his 80's. You would never have guessed that; both of them were strong, vibrant and we seriously thought they were in their late 60's. There is still a bit of chaos in the shop, perhaps by now, more things are displayed and sections are are a bit more organized. When that day comes, I imagine that there will be even more treasures than the ones I found that day. There are gently used, older treasures mixed with a few more, contemporary items and some lovely furniture pieces. A wonderful couple who own a cool, little shop where you would least expect to find out. A great place to spend a couple of hours.

But I was highly impressed with the cleanliness, organization, and prices at Apple Wagon Antique Mall. I visit many similar stores every year in this region and I found this place to be a cut above most with the same types of merchandise. They do have some genuine antiques (some very cool stuff) more to the right side of the large building. To the left and straight back, it's the type of merchandise you would find in Hobby Lobby along with Fiestaware seconds. Neither category is my thing, but I know them well enough to see that prices were good. If I was a suburban mom with a big garden and kids/teen rooms to decorate I would have been in heaven here, I'll say that. TIP: If you're thinking about a road trip stop here, they have clean restrooms and inexpensive candy, bottled water and soda so you can avoid a c-store this time, if you please.
