I'm not allowed to give Homemade London more than five stars, but if I had that option, they'd get them.
I really really like it here. Not the first (nor will it be the last) craft venue to pop up recently, but it's certainly the most swish. Nicola has tried to create a venue that's at the high-end of crafting, and she does it very well. She's inspired by Liberty, and it shows. I can only see the place getting better and they've only been open for a month.
I went along for their perfume making class (I was invited, I didn't pay for it), and we had a fantastic time. A lovely group of girls who were chatting right from the off over bubbly. Tanya was a fantastic teacher, so knowledgable and excited by what she was doing. We smelt around 20 different oils for our perfumes - base notes, middle notes and top notes and honestly, had no idea how they'd all go together (especially after a while your head gets fuzzy). But you pick the ones you like, and instinctively, you can tell how to make something taste more enjoyable (and if you can't, Tanya can). Or, you put too much jasmine in your perfume and change it completely. Ahem. Might have thrown some cardamom in for good measure. My 'what the heck' attitude doesn't lend itself to delicate perfume.
We actually made two perfumes, I'm happier with my first as it's exactly what I wanted to make, but the second is nice as well. I wanted something different, it's a mix of citrus and jasmine (the first is a spicy jasmine, I have a thing about jasmine). You write down what you put in everything so you've got a note if you ever want to make it again. You've got your little signature scent recipe.
The class has a classy chemistry feel about it. You sit there with beakers and little test sticks, but throw in some cheese and bubbly (and the best bread I've tasted in a long time) and it doesn't feel like school anymore.
The only downside is that the class overran by about an hour, but that's because we were all having so much fun. There was nothing stopping us leaving once we'd finished our perfumes (and they'd been decanted into little bottles with roller balls and all wrapped up) but it's nice to know that we weren't being rushed. I had a great time and I'm thrilled with my perfumes.
The class would have been £99 for three (and maybe a bit extra) hours, with everything included. It's more expensive than some crafty venues in London, but after visiting, I'd be happy to pay that again if it was something that I really wanted to do. It's an excellent venue and I can't recommend the perfume class high enough. read more
