HomeState has become my go-to breakfast spot in the Playa Vista/Westchester area. This isn't your traditional taco stand - it's definitely a more modern, hipster take on Texas-style breakfast tacos. But they execute it pretty well. One of my favorite morning routines is grabbing a coffee from Blue Bottle next door, then settling in at HomeState with my two favorite breakfast tacos: the Guadalupe and Don't Mess with Texas. Guadalupe - 4/5. I always order this on a corn tortilla. It comes with eggs, chorizo, and cheese, and the ingredients are decent. The portion is generous, with plenty of fluffy eggs that are cooked just right - not overdone or runny. The cheese melts nicely into the eggs, creating a good texture. The chorizo is decent, though it's the weakest component of an otherwise excellent taco. Also, I realized that the portion of chorizo has shrunk over the years. Don't Mess with Texas - 4/5. I'm generally not a fan of refried pinto beans, but this taco completely won me over. The combination of beans, bacon, potatoes, and cheese works surprisingly well, especially with the salsa verde. The flavors come together beautifully, making this one of the more satisfying breakfast tacos on the menu. I've tried a few of their other breakfast tacos, and they're all good. Still, I always find myself coming back to these two. HomeState offers two house salsas roja and verde, both with a brighter, more acidic profile than what you'd typically find at a taco shop. Usually that would be a bit problematic for regular tacos, but that acidity pairs well with the rich breakfast tacos. My only complaint is that I wish they packed more heat. Hot sauces are available, but I'd rather the house salsas bring the spice on their own. Even so, they're flavorful and complement the tacos well. Overall, I like my Blue Bottle coffee + 2 breakfast tacos combination, and will continue eating here. read more

Came here solo after a recent Yelp Elite event (another shout out to Sarah) armed with a cute "two free tacos & a drink" card given by the amazing staff from Home State at that particular event. Therefore, I have to come and take advantage right? Well, I was able to order both tacos keto style (Dallas Fort Worth variety) and have their contents put in these cute cups. Needless to say they were delicious as was the fresh coffee. The CSA (CUSTOMER SERVICE ALL STAR) of this experience was none other than Erik-pictured. What a super nice guy! Erik was super humble, and yet calm cool and collective-while managing the usual door traffic. I guess where I'm going with this is I certainly couldn't do it! Pricey breakfast burritos but they're fat and tasty! Stopped by for a quick breakfast since I was running early for a meeting and my boyfriend and I each got 2 tacos. The tacos were huge! They're very pricey but definitely holds value in terms of quantity! The salsas here are also very very yummy. Parking was a bit difficult but otherwise it's a cute spot! They were doing a lot of catering packages and they have 2 gender neutral restrooms in the back! read more

Tacos are massive, I order the Guadalupe tacos this is my morning go to tacos. It's chorizo (there is also soyrizo as a vegetarian option) with eggs soo tasty! I get always get my tacos with flour; they make their own tortillas which makes it that much better. I have also ordered the potato tacos are delicious the jalapeños are spicy so if you don't like spice don't get it or ask to remove the jalapeño's. I arrived 10 minutes from closing, so i wasn't expecting the freshest 2 tacos and after eating the Trinity taco, sad to say but I wasn't wrong, lol. HomeState is mouthwatering Tex Mex with simple, fresh, and delicious ingredients. So lucky that we have this place local in Playa Vista. Limited free street parking right in front but if willing/able to walk a short distance there are plenty of free street parking places in PV nearby and also pay to park structure. HomeState has a welcoming patio with plenty of outdoor covered seating options in addition to several indoor tables. The staff are always very friendly and helpful. Favorite breakfast tacos have to be the Blanco and the Pecos. Each taco with only a few ingredients but they come together beautifully. Favorite anytime taco believe it or not is the Potato taco...it's incredible!! Don't sleep on the Frito Pie in a Bag, it's so good!! Pair it up with a margarita and we're in business!! Cute Homestate location with neighborhood parking and food just as tasty as its other locations. Queso is top notch and brisket taco is one of my favorites. 4+ A small chain that has a few locations in Los Angeles as of August/2024 that specializes in Texas style tacos (and breakfast tacos), which means there are definitely Texas style flavors and themes on a lot of the food items. The person helping me was very, very friendly and even offered the dog I was with a dog treat. It's a very chill location with seating on the inside of outside. I was in the neighborhood and stopped by for breakfast. I ordered the don't mess with Texas and the Trinity breakfast tacos along with the cookie milk iced coffee. Both tacos had delicious flavors and textures and a great soft and chewy flour tortilla on each. The iced coffee was definitely an interesting flavor and I really enjoyed it. All in all just great place to go for a casual breakfast, whether by yourself or in small groups. Every time I come here, the staff is always friendly, there's plenty of seating both inside and outside, and the atmosphere is relaxed. Really solid Mexican spot with great flavors. The food came out fresh and, and you can tell they put care into the recipes. I ordered a couple different tacos and they were on point -- especially the tortillas and the salsa, which had just the right kick. Knocking off one star only because a couple things took longer than expected and one dish could've been a little hotter temperature-wise. Nothing major, just room to be even better. How have I never reviewed Homestate before?!?!? I've been going pretty much since they opened and they remain one of my favorite spots in LA. They must treat their employees well because I have never once received bad service at any location I've gone to (and I've been to most locations), the food is delicious both in flavor and quality, lately they've not been as veggie friendly as they used to be IMO (I'm a vegetarian), but they do have constant vegetarian options on the menu and in fact my regular - the Chicano Batman taco - is a vegan taco (although I usually de-vegan-ize it because Homestate's Queso is amazing). The restaurants are all relaxed and friendly and CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN which we love so it's a great place to hang with friends & family. The one legit bummer is they opened a Homestate "stand" (instead of a full restaurant like all of the other locations) in the West Adams area during the pandemic and it didn't survive which I think it might have if it had been a full restaurant (there's another restaurant down the street absolutely killing it). I remain highly disappointed that they never tried to open a full location in this area and I really hope they try to do so in the near future. read more

IMHO, the prices do not justify the taste, like it's good but not $7 per taco good. Brisket and Tijuana panther tacos were tasty and solid but $6-$7 each. The ground beef was very mid, felt like a meximelt from Taco Bell. Staff was really nice and ambience is nice + variety and $2 add on for chips and drink is such a good deal. Need to street park or park at structure. read more

We've been long time customers and unfortunately the quality seems to be slightly declining. The past few times we've ordered, something's been incorrect and the eggs/meats are slightly drier than they used to be. Will give another shot but am bummed at the declining quality. read more

I literally think about these tacos all of the time, they were so good. I got the cheese and egg plus the beef and cheese, both were amazing. The house made tortillas were super soft, cheese was melty, salsa was fresh and tangy plus the meat was flavourful and not greasy. My three year old daughter and hubby also loved them as well. Delicious tacos, a little pricey though and some great queso and guacamole, and those come with chips. I'm not a huge breakfast taco person, but my friends and I got together here to hang out. We arrived a little after 11 am on a Saturday and it wasn't completely packed, but most of the tables on the inside were taken and there were only a few tables available outside. We also got lucky with parking and pulled in right when someone was leaving, otherwise the street was already lined with cars. You order at the front first and then you grab a table, and they will bring your order to you. I ordered the Pecos Taco ($5) and the Chicano Batman ($5), and then the table shared a Loaded Queso ($10). They use some tape to label each type of taco so you know what you're getting, which is smart. Both of the tacos that I got were good, though I did like the pecos a bit more. I feel like the chicano batman was a bit too salty for me. They give you bottles of red and green salsa to put on your tacos, and personally I liked the green salsa more since it tasted a bit lighter but still had lots of flavor to it. The queso was also good to share as a side. All the brisket was on the bottom though so you kind of have to dig for it. Between the 2 tacos and a bit of the queso with chips, I was completely full by the end of the meal. The 2 tacos on their own were enough to get me full. We got our orders pretty quickly, and everyone working there was really friendly. Food is good, so this is a good place to suggest for breakfast tacos. I'd be down to come back again if I'm in the area for breakfast. read more

I first heard of HomeState from a Buzzfeed Worth It video many many years ago and it has been on my list ever since. I love breakfast and I love tacos. Makes sense to combine the two! I haven't been to the other locations, but Playa Vista is a nice area and it's a lot easier to find street parking. There are some tables inside, and there's lots of outdoor seating. You order at the counter, get a number, and find a seat. Here's what we tried: - Cookie milk iced coffee: It was a solid iced coffee and the concept of using cookie milk is very exciting, but unfortunately the flavor wasn't that strong - Blanco (egg whites, shiitake mushrooms, monterey jack): I wanted something lighter to balance out the brisket and this was so good! This taco was definitely more stuffed than the other ones. Egg whites get a bad rep for having no flavor but this taco had a bunch of flavor. Only downside was that because of the mushrooms, it was pretty wet so it was a little difficult to eat. Perhaps not the one to order if you're trying to look cute on a date, but soo worth the mess. - Pecos (eggs and brisket): Brisket for breakfast? Don't need to tell me twice. The brisket was very tender and paired super nicely with the eggs. Do yourself a favor and get the tacos with their house made flour tortillas. These were seriously some of the best flour tortillas I've had and if I could, I would love to just take home a giant stack of tortillas. I'll probably try some of the other locations that are a little closer to me, but this was a fantastic first experience and I'm happy to report it exceeded my expectations! read more

Hands down the best breakfast tacos I've had in ages. They serve different styles of beans, from vegetarian to your traditional meat beans. Fresh flour tortillas. All for a reasonable price. We went back and I made sure to buy a dozen tortillas to take back home with me. I don't live in the area, my sister took us here, and I'm so happy that she did. Parking is a pain, but some how people make it work? Granted I only went on the weekend. I'm sure it's insane when people are working in the offices. HomeState's tacos remind me of Texas's Veracruz all natural. The vibrant design of the restaurant and menus give it a casual but fun place to get a meal. They have a list of breakfast tacos but I personally love their savory one, especially the Fort Worth. The balance of the chicken and lettuce with other toppings was perfect. I also tried their panther taco which was brisket, but it was too much meat in each bite. The brisket was good though. This location is in the middle of playa vista and parking may be a bit tough because of the office buildings around it. read more

BTW, breakfast items are served all day which is an added bonus. The Hibiscus Limeade is a must try thirst quencher, especially on a hot day, but really, on any day this drink is a favorite. Indoor seating is limited, but there is ample patio seating, okay for small groups. HomeState is a popular taco with a handful of locations in LA that brings Texas flavors here in taco form. I swung by for lunch and was able to order quickly and get our orders in short order. The Ft Worth to me had the best flavors and good cook on the chicken. The brisket was a tad dry but fortunately they have some decent sauces you can layer on. And the picadillo was fine, a bit mushy but still pretty good taste. Given size and quality of ingredients, priced accordingly at ~$6 each. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating which is nice. We found some by only a true miracle. There's just very, very little free parking in this area. Two words: Tijuana Panther. Get this taco on an absolutely delicious freshly-made flour tortilla. It's filled with juicy and tender brisket and it's fantastic. It's also quite large--call it a smallish burrito. The breakfast tacos are served all day. The Don't Mess With Texas taco (beans, bacon, potatoes, and cheddar) was plentiful with the beans and that's all I could taste. It was fine but not terrific. The potato taco was very good. Almost no one ever orders potato tacos anywhere but you should get try them. They are almost always great. The Frito Pie in a Bag is made with that same brisket chili and I'm a fan of Frito pie, whenever, wherever. It's a comfort food that always delivers. We also tried the queso and chips and it was fine. The cheese was good but I actually thought the chips were outstanding. They were fresh and crunchy and plentiful (we did order the "big" queso). I'd say two tacos and maybe chips is plenty for a meal. I'd come back for that Tijuana Panther any day or to try some different items. Don't sleep on the red and green salsas, either. Sooo good! Make sure you get the Flour tortillas -homemade right there! My party and I all got tacos, and every one of them was a winner. I especially loved the Guadalupe with chorizo and the Blanco. It is vegetarian ,but has egg whites, so delicious and protein filled to even a non vegetarian like me! Andys Migas was larger than I thought, and so good! Crispy potatoes were perfect. First time trying it and it was pretty tasty. I tried the walking taco which was so yummy and they actually fill it up nicely. It's topped with cheese, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and I added beans because I mean why not. My colleague got the salad with chicken it was big and she liked it. This is an unusual taco place. Almost everyone orders a breakfast taco. The Trinity, is the most popular and "traditional" with eggs, bacon and a few pieces of potato. I like it on the flour tortilla but my kids like the corn tortillas. Both are about the same size. These are normal sizes "soft tacos" but incredibly filling. I always order a Trinity and a Pecos, which is scrambled eggs and lots of brisket. Two tacos are too much to eat, but psychologically I get two and wish I only ordered one taco. The Pecos, or any other taco with brisket, is excellent. Yeah, the tacos are a little too salty, but that's so they can sell more drinks. I tried the cookie milk iced coffee. Not impressed with the coffee. It has a strong over roasted or burned coffee taste and I didn't understand the "cookie" flavor. If you go in a weekend morning try to arrive before 11 so no problem with seating. read more

There is an old saying, don't fix it if it ain't broke. The chili brisket was the most authentically Texan thing they had on the menu, it's what brought me and friends back over and over. It has been replaced with unseasoned ground beef. The tacos are overpriced for what they are and could be best described as a drop below average. The queso which used to be so great and flavorful was as bland as unseasoned mashed potatoes. In less than a month this place went from our go to, to never again. read more
