I'm not a fan of Fisher Price, not in the least because there is a high likelihood that someone else has bought the same gift (this totally happened at my nephew's first birthday), so I like to get something a little different...and something that I would like to play with myself. Jasper Junior is one of my best auntie ever go-to stores. It is jam-packed with great toys, games and clothes for kids of all ages, and best of all, it is a Fisher Price-free zone. Instead, you can get a whole range of wooden toys (Brio is a particularly good brand with a great modern design sensibility) or puzzles or fancy dress costumes. I'm a particular fan of anything they have that helps kids learn languages other than English (such as French alphabet flash cards or wooden blocks with Italian words and numbers). There are even these slightly frightening dolls that are all anatomically correct, you know, DOWN THERE. (Actually, I'm planning on getting one of these for one of my brats at some stage.) The staff are really helpful too, so if you are stuck for ideas or on the appropriateness of gifts for certain ages (apparently you're not supposed to give small children sharp objects - who knew?) they can help you out. So if you are ever hungover and in a desperate rush to get to a first birthday party but need a great present with minimal fuss (like I was this morning), Jasper Junior is your place.

Strangely enough, I have an old work collague who has one of these tattooed to her thigh.I know that if I ever had to buy her a present, I would come here. Another similarity between this shop and the song can be seen if you watch the film clip and look closely at her eyes. You will see the same facial expression on her as you would on someone who collects these dolls when they see one the really like. If you're looking to buy someone a unique birthday present like I was one day then this is that place to come and find it. You might even pick something up for yourself.

Though, I could technically write this off as research since I work in the toy industry, it's not that at all. Most Toyworld stores seem to be quite small and cramped with stuff spilling off the shelf and making it hard to move around. The Brunswick store is far from this. It's quite large and everything is nice and neat and spaced out. Everything is in it's own little section and there is a great variety of toys to be found here. They have a nice selection of Playmobil products, which is great as it is rare to find this stuff in Australia from what I've seen. Usually my first visit section in any toy store is the action figures, but here it was almost non-existent. They were on the ends of a few aisles and in a few other spots but they didn't have much of a choice. Everything that was here seemed fairly new though which is a good thing as action figures tend to hang around on the shelf well past when they are the latest thing. I may have caught them on a bad day (Sunday afternoon) but customer service didn't seem high on the agenda. A couple of younger employees were working and I was the only one in the store and went largely ignored by them. I actually had to go and find one of them when I wanted to make a purchase as nobody was anywhere near the counter/front of store. There's a good range here though, with some toys you might not see anywhere else so it's well worth a pop in to stock up on kid's birthday pressies, Christmas...or if you're like me, a treat for yourself.

I told him I could give him an order number (the order was quite large) so he replies, "what did you order". So I start to rattle off card for card what I ordered and he stops me and says, "So you have a singles order. That's what you had to say." I ask the clerk for the hardest puzzle he could find me. He found me one and told me that this has kept him busy for weeks and has not been able to solve it. Within 10 minutes I was done and had to go back to the shop and get something else as I still had 50 minutes left to waste.
