The café has been closed and converted into an event space, leaving guests with essentially no food options on-site. We also tried to visit the Candy Bar around 10 p.m. and, despite the space being only about half full, were told they weren't allowing anyone else in. We explained that we were hotel guests and asked if we could simply get a drink to enjoy in the lobby, but they wouldn't allow that either. For the price, there are much better options nearby. Rooms at Shinola are roughly the same price, but are significantly larger and nicer, with multiple food and drink options. They also allow guests to enjoy a drink in the lobby or take it back to their room. It's disappointing to see how much this property has changed since our last stay. Unfortunately, after this experience, I won't be making the mistake of staying here again.

First things first, I have to give this hotel a huge shoutout because this is my second time staying here, and every single time I come, I absolutely love it. The atmosphere, the cleanliness, the location--it just feels like one of those places where you can settle in and breathe for a minute. Now let me tell y'all how I thought I had everything together... You know those moments when you've packed your bags, made it through the airport, landed safely, got your transportation figured out, checked into the hotel, and you're feeling real accomplished? Yeah... that lasted about five minutes. Because your girl forgot to call the bank before leaving town. So there I am trying to use my card and suddenly it's giving me the "absolutely not" treatment. I'm standing there confused, looking at my card like, "Excuse me? We've been through too much together for this." After a quick call to Navy Federal, I realized exactly what happened. They flagged the transaction because I was using my card in Detroit. Which, honestly, I appreciate because fraud is real. But baby... that 45-minute wait on the phone had me questioning my life choices. All I needed was for somebody to say, "Yep, that's Destineé. Turn her card back on." Once everything was sorted out and they got me back up and running, I headed to my room and took a moment to decompress. And if you're part of the HS community, then you already know. After traveling, walking through airports, carrying bags, and dealing with flare-ups, sometimes the greatest luxury isn't a fancy meal or a beautiful view... It's finding a bathroom, getting comfortable, and letting your body rest for a few minutes. So that's exactly what I did. I unpacked a little, gathered myself, gave my body a chance to breathe, and got ready for everything the weekend had in store. Because no matter what little hiccups happen along the way, we keep it moving. Detroit, we're officially here. And y'all already know... It's Just How Life Goes.

He supports local businesses (yay!) and can direct you to several businesses run by the local community development corporation. ~ There are abandoned homes on the same street, but he has a good security system and I felt safe and secure with another female traveler. There's also a little park where we saw children play across the street. ~ Rooms: The 3 themed rooms (Air, Water, and Fire) are comfortable and clean. You will have access to a full kitchen, shared full bathroom. We were in the Fire room on the 2nd floor, which had a great Tempurpedic mattress. The third floor room, which was unoccupied during our stay, is in the attic and looked spacious enough for four people - one full size bed and floor space for sleeping bags and pads. There was sound insulation leading up to it, so good for small groups who are traveling through. During our stay, we met another woman from Chicago who was considering moving back to the city. Neat! Inyo is the onsite kitty. He's long haired, friendly, and talkative. My friend had little problem with her allergies. Definitely recommended!

They are truly the gems of this place. I see the same people year after year and they truly care for you while you are here. I've gotten excellent advice about where and what to eat, where to visit, and even life advice. From Cassandra who answers the phone, to group sales, to the front desk, to the thorough and patient housekeeper Jasmine, to the really kind van drivers/ concierge (Captain Tony, Cory, and Darryl), to the nice woman at the bar restaurant downstairs. Everyone does an amazing job. This place is a great value also. It's an all suites hotel so you get a lot of space. I love having the sleeping room separate from the living room so if some people in your party want to stay up and chat they can do that while I can have my peace and nap in the bedroom. The sound proofing isn't perfect but it's pretty good for a hotel room. I also love the deep soaking tub. I always arrive earlier than everyone else so I can take a bath right when I get there. There is a shuttle service that is very useful for trips within 5 miles. I've seen many people use it to get to the sports arena nearby. I tend to use it to go to nearby restaurants, dance clubs and the whole foods nearby before all the markets opened downtown. They just went through some serious remodeling and everything looks really good. The location in Greektown makes it walkable to most places. I'm most interested in walking to Hart Plaza, which is about 10 minutes walking. It's also about 10-15 minutes walking to the DAX bus stop. I've even taken the 20 minute walk to the Fox theater because I wanted to see that building. Its best to walk with someone if your going that far and keep your wits about you, but I felt completely safe (as a brown woman who grew up in NYC). I love how much Detroit is growing and changing for the more beautiful. If I had one complaint it would be the music that they play in the lobby. I wish they would play Motown (because of the city we're in), techno or Greek music (because we're in Greektown and the place is called the Atheneum). I feel like that would be more true to where we are, but that's such a small thing, and maybe just me. All in all, I LOVE staying here and will continue to stay here when ever I'm in Detroit.

I couldn't find it listed separately on Yelp, but the bartender (I think his name was Max) is a true mixologist. Every drink he made was superb. I also ordered the chicken tacos, which were flavorful and really delicious. Honestly, I'd come back just to hang out at the bar again!

This building could possibly be a…read morestate landmark as it has been there a long time as I remember partying there in my early twenties with an older co-worker who was a member.
