As a local indie artist I've come around to the MF Monday open mics that they host most every Monday, and I've seen recurring faces of people and folk who have done nothing but support and encourage the community that arrives here. It hurts to know that they are having to deal with unfair property management and that they are being reduced and devolved into something lesser because greedy property owners want so badly for Jose and his wife to have a difficult life. This place is all about love and acceptance and to see that people so close and so directly integrated into the local scene is being berated and harassed is heartbreaking and infuriating! The Host First and foremost, I was invited by Rad through his event posting on Yelp! International Wednesdays at Cork and Thorn with live music! LIVE MUSIC is the catchphrase, music feeds my soul! Thanks for the invite. The Experience The vibe was that of a street party, as I walked through the alleyway I was greeted by the aroma of fresh southern cooking and sweet, musky smoke. There was a food truck selling Poe Boy sammiches and chicken wings! Right adjacent to this food truck was a mobile trailer that offered cigars. People gathered and lounged while listening to music that was pumping loud from the venue. I love the lounge setup and atmosphere! Cork and Thorn The place is quaint and intimate. A great place for a listening party and lounging with friends. There is plenty of seating strategically placed, making room for dancing. The melodic tune was reggae with R&B live. I was entertained. I definitely want to come back and enjoy some more. The bar offers mixology drinks, whiskey, bourbon, and wine. The menu also listed finger foods. What's on your plate? Nothing edible. I purchased a stogie named Tatiana groovy blue and some chips and salsa. Shhh, I'm a stogie virgin. I needed expert advice, luckily for me this tall, dark, strapping young man approached my table and introduced himself as Tony, the general manager. I learned that the owner is a florist named Randy, who conducts "how to" make flower arrangements with cocktails and wine parties. Inquire within for pricing and reservations (side note: would make for a great yelp elite event). The venue is open all days of the week except for Monday. There is live music every day that features the following lineup: Tuesday, 80's Live Wednesday, International Wednesday's Thursday, Black Ryan and MOB Band Friday, Fresh Friday's bar rescue from 11pm-2am Spoken Word and Open MIC with 360 Tha Poet Saturday, Alli Star and the Alli Cats with DJ Tonearmz spoken work Sunday, 90's Hip Hop Brunch with DJ Tonearmz from 11 am-4 pm and Karaoke with KevLove there after. Tony took me on a live 360 view of the place. Outside, the alleyway with the two trucks is a part of your experience. The food truck and the stogie truck. Badd Ash Mobile Cigar Lounge I conversed with the friendly people lounging at the front of this truck. They taught me how to torch the foot of the cigar until you see the cherry then give it a couple of blows until smoke ventilates. I learned not to inhale/swallow the smoke but to suck and hold it in your mouth, then blow it out slowly. I tasted sweet blueberries. Cigars are definitely an acquired taste, a trait I will have to revisit at another time. The truck is absolutely fantastic. There is a hostess selling a variety of cigars and cigar accessories. I walked deeper into the rabbits hole to find a lounge area with a cozy couch and a small bar with a bottle of whiskey/rum (self service), at the foot of the truck is a patio with seating for fresh air.
