Looked at the previous reviews and decided to still give this place a try. Previous reviews stayed long wait which we were fine with. Upon arriving to the restaurant we waited for a few minutes and a guy seated us. He did inform us that they had a bunch of tables to serve and it would be about 45 minutes until we got our food. We appreciated the heads up with the time. Unfortunately it took about 15 minutes for a server to realize we were even there. A table next to us were waiting longer and complained then upon them ordering she noticed we didn't even have drinks yet. Server was super nice, mentioned that she's not usually a server but they are short staff. Completely understandable. We ordered our drinks and food together and they did come out within 45 minutes. The service was great besides them forgetting about us. I wasn't thrilled with the taste of the food and the prices. The food was just your average basic food. The pretzel was honestly the best thing we ordered. My bbq pulled pork tacos didn't come with bbq sauce, I had to ask. My friend's lobster roll came on a hot dog bun instead of a roll. We tried my friend's calamari which seemed like something frozen from a box in the grocery store. For the prices they charge it isn't the quality you would expect. I am a fair person and try to be optimistic as possible, I understand everywhere is short staffed right now. However, I wouldn't return due to enjoying more tasty food elsewhere for less money. read more

Been in the business a long time..very disappointed by bar staff. Extremely unsanitary.. three men behind the bar.. all of which were constantly eating , and handling customers drinks , never washing their hands .. we were overcharged for food . Prices on special board and check were higher by at least four dollars per item.. the bartenders were arrogant and not really attentive . Our party of 6 went Labor Day weekend. Good sized crowd there, and plenty of casual outside seating. Menu prices were very reasonable. Basic bar food menu. We had drinks, appetizers, and dinner. Overall food was bar food quality. Would we return? Probably if we were in Seaside Heights again and looking for reasonable casual dinner. Price was right, and we enjoyed the outdoor casual setting. Seems dive bar ish inside which isn't necessarily bad thing depending on your visit. This review is mainly for dining on the weekend: If here on a weekend, there is a decent amount of people smoking right next to the outdoor seating. Almost wish they would ban that and ask for people to smoke on the other side of the building or something for people eating outside. Food was decent and everyone liked what they ordered, but was not worth an hour+ long hour wait if you go on a busy night. our waiter was very nice, but believe it or not, it took more than two hours to get our food last Saturday night. They told us the chef was out, but we had no idea it would be this long a wait. Stopped in for a quick bite to eat. I heard there are new owners. Service was great. I had the clam chowder which was fantastic and a cheeseburger which was also very good, My only negative was they forgot to give me utensils. Not a big deal! Plan to make this my new go-to bar. OH YEA! this is our kinda place. A drinkers bar a block or 2 in from the boardwalk. No food here but you can order in, just ask the bartenders for menus. Cash Only, but the drinks are cheap and strong. They have light up beer pong tables, plenty of pool tables, and of course our favorite, Ping Pong. We felt comfortable right away and played a couple of games of Ping Pong. The crowd seemed like everyone there was looking for a fun time. The bartender was quick and the bathrooms clean. Hooks is our favorite dive bar in seaside, HOWEVER, stick to drinks only. They introduced a food menu last season and it was amazing.. this season they have outsourced their kitchen to Jersey Roll (the pork roll place on the boardwalk) as their food offering. Since then the menu is 1/4 the size, with 90% having pork roll included. If you don't like pork roll or want regular bar food, don't eat here. Captain Hook's was a stones throw away from our hotel in Seaside. We decided to get a drink while waiting for our room to open up, so we decided to kick it here and boy are we glad we did. Captain Hook's became our Go To for the entire week and I already miss it! The drinks are CHEAP ($14 for 4 drinks).... but keep in mind it's cash only! The pour is heavy. They have a bunch of video games. It's pirate theme'd. And... wait for it. Wait for itttt. They have BEER PONG! Granted, you have to fill the cups with water (to make sure the place doesn't get nasty and reek which I give them major points for), but the lights under where you place your cups light up. AWESOME. I was so sad to leave Seaside... mostly because of Captain Hook's. I'll see you again darnit! read more

Not a good experience. Not friendly towards items you can't eat. Definitely not vegan friendly. My friend visiting from outside the country ordered vegetable taco and mentioned he is a vegan and would like to omit the cheese. The food arrived he started eating and noticed something creamy in the taco, it was aoli. (Which was not listed as an ingredient for that item on the menu). He stopped eating and asked about it. The waitress insisted it says aoli on the menu, he only said no cheese, and he is vegan and she she doesn't know what vegans can't and can eat. I told her we'll pay for it. She says no she won't charge for it. but next time if someone says they're vegan when placing their order and you dont know, one should ask or at least tell the chef who should know. As you would with any other food restrictions. My friend is vegan due to health issues, and cant digest meats an dairy. They make him sick. When asked for the menu again... aoli clearly wasn't on the menu. She then apologized saying it was a newly printed menu. Needless to say we stopped eating. Just paid for the rest of the order and left. Where only in seaside heights for one night. Being grossed out and my friend upset and not feeling well. When I entered with my family, we loved the ambiance. Sports bar atmosphere and fun. We were served by a very nice young woman BUT the food was horrible! To start, we waited 30 minutes for our six meals. My food came cold and returned it for another. Some meals had no taste and others did not taste fresh. At the end, when most of the food was not eaten, we asked for the manager, Will. He came to the table and was so rude to us when we explained our food issues and how long we had to wait for the food. He responded, well, you are in Seaside so what do you expect, it takes long to cook. Said we ate most of it, and he saw some garlic in the food so it must have been tasty and said arrogantly, what doyou want me to do? I would have been grateful for an apology but did not even get that. He took 10 percent off the bill but that kind of help with the situation was not sufficient. If you're looking for fancy drinks and a boring time don't come here! Hooks is a casual, fun filled bar with an awesome staff and good drinks. Can't go wrong with a pitcher of beer and shuffleboard. I come here year round about every other week to play some games, have some drinks and relax. I love that you are allowed to bring your own food or have it delivered, I don't do that often at all but it's nice to have the option. Not having a kitchen has never been a problem for me. I've been to a couple parties here that were catered and the staff at Hooks was always super helpful with keeping everything organized. If any of the games are down (doesn't happen often at all) the staff is quick to fix it or refund your money. Hooks is obviously not new but I always notice on how clean they keep it, bathrooms are older but clean. read more

THE KITCHEN IS OPEN! First off I am obsessed with their food everything I have tried from the soups, appetizers, to the burgers is delicious! You definitely have to come and try at least one thing off of their menu and you will be hooked! I go to this bar at least once a week with friends because not only do they have the cheapest drinks in seaside, they have games to play so if you have friends that don't want to drink or can't they have something else to do besides sit around and watch everyone else drink. The crowd is casual so don't expect to come here dressed up for the club! After working in the bar/hospitality business for over two decades, I have finally experienced something I cannot explain. My wife and I, both professionals in our 40's and LOCAL, went to Hook's to play a few games and have a drink. While there we decided on a late snack. We walked up to the kitchen "window" and waited while the girl behind the counter prepped some ingredients for another order. And waited. And waited. When she came over and handed us a menu, everything was X'd out except quesadillas, apparently someone forgot to stock the kitchen. So we ordered one to share. When the buzzer I was handed went off, I went to pick up the order. Some gruff, angry millennial tossed the plate on the counter and told me it was my quesadilla. It was a piece of pita bread with processed cheese spread they had then toasted. Not the quesadilla on their menu I had ordered. When I mentioned this, a gentleman who was looking to order saw my quesadilla and changed his mind, saying he didn't want to order food from them after seeing this. He then walked away. I asked for a refund. I had paid via card and the person who gave me my order said he refunded my payment. I asked for a receipt. He turned his POS around which showed a refund of my payment for the food, but not the tip. I asked for my tip back, advising I wanted a FULL refund, and he said again that he had refunded the payment. I had to point out the difference in what I paid versus what I was refunded, which was shy the amount of what I had given as a tip. He growled, reached into their tip jar at the kitchen, and handed me the amount of my tip in cash. Ok, situation over, right? Back to games and a drink with my wife? No. I guess he was upset that his poor service and product had cost him another sale, or he didn't like that I had pulled my tip on a product I did not receive. As I am walking back over to my wife, the bouncer, read other Yelp reviews for notes about this winner, steps in front of me and says I have to leave. Seriously? I was sober, spending money, and asked for a refund for a sub par product. I have been to this place a good 20 times in the past year, to have a drink and play a few bar games. Don't have your bouncer threaten a patron for your own inadequacy. In over two decades of working as a bartender, security or entertainment at other bars, I have NEVER experienced such a complete and utter lack of respect for the customer. Soo.. my only vacation, we walked from ortley beach to go here because this was our favorite bar for years... this year .. the big fathead at the door , carded us ... we were caught off guard being all of us were over the age of 45.. now I'm not against the state law of having to show ID but the surly door guy thought he was the shit when he pointed out that he was gonna card everyone except me!!He was being rude and clearly didn't want any of the people I was with to drink in there bar! I'm not sure what his beef was but all of us own different locations of residential properties and could've made your bartenders income a little better for a Wednesday in the middle of September. I truly understand the bar stand point , but when you segregate people within a group when clearly your not a 2 year old trying to decipher who's over 21 or not. Went to this establishment a couple of weeks ago & I'll never go back. When my friends & I got there it was near empty, a never good sign on a Saturday night. Regardless we tried to salvage the situation & have a good time & get a few drinks. It took forever to get out first drink & they were a bit pricey as well. A little while later after we got another round of drinks one of the bouncers told us that our friend had to leave. He said he had, "too much to drink", & that he had to go. We explained to him that we just got drinks & asked if we could finish them & then go. He told us no & told us we had to go. First of all, I want to say that this place is BIG! Not huge, but pretty freakin' big! There is a full wrap around bar, which probably seats around thirty to thirty-five local regulars, and tourists. Straight ahead you'll find a pool able or two, and some dart boards. About eight or nine tables, and some lounge chairs too! A dance floor, which is sometimes covered by tables, or whatnot! Drinks are good, beer is reasonable. Cocktails are a little ridiculous though, about six dollars for a drink is crazy! That's not what pisses me off though. What really gripes my butt, is the entertainment. Once in a while they will have some music or something, but mostly not much at all! This type of place with the locale, and the size should have a live band at least three nights a week, if not five in the summer! Definitely the potential to be a five-star drink spot... a guys just need to step up the music a little. Get that groove going! read more

Hooks is the perfect location for getting together and catching up with a group of friends. The place is large and open, with couches and many tables. Beer is cheap, as little as $2 a pint, $7 a pitcher. It's almost like Chuckie Cheese for adults, minus the pizza and robotic singing mouse. They have pingpong, tabletop shuffleboard, basketball, darts, foosball, pool, and a slew of typical bar arcade games. The music is chosen by the patrons on the jukebox. The bar has a parking lot that fits about 30 cars, so if you arrive early enough, you can get good parking. Best bar in Seaside Heights to avoid the stereotypical fist pumping of Seaside Heights, but younger crowd than Riggers. read more
