One of the great pie shops of Chicago -- really their only flaws are flaws of popularity and excess. Their popularity means that on any given afternoon you pop in for a piece of pie they may have sold out of all of their fruit pies and you may be forced to accept a slice of cream or custard pie. Their excess means a lot of the pies are a little too sweet for my blood. But it's a pie shop, and I doubt you are going to be turned off by the pie being a little too sweet! I used to not be much of a pie person, but due to Hoosier Mama I've been converted. Their pies are always fresh and revolving so there are new options each day. They range from cream bases to fruit bases to a clafoutis (which I'd never even heard of but has quickly become a serious favorite of mine in the pie realm). Shop is small but very cute and old timey with a spacious, sunny back patio perfect for nice days. Staff are always busy but very nice and food/drinks are always quickly served! Some all time personal faves include the Cherry Clafoutis, the Cherry Limeade, and the Peach Raspberry Pecan! Stopped here twice. The first time we took a frozen chicken pot pie to go. It was pretty good, very flavorful but a different style than we are used to. The passion fruit pie was good, very tart! The merengue was tasty. The next time we went we sat at the counter and had a slice of chicken pot pie- delicious! Loved it! The crust is flaky and the filling was thick and full of flavor! We tried a variety of the small crème pies- all great! So deserving of its high reviews! This place turned me into a pie-lover. I tried the banana cream pie (just a quick bite before I left Chicago). It was the most unforgettable bite of my whole trip. I'm not usually a fan of banana cream (not a fan of Magnolia Bakery's banana pudding either) but this place hits all the marks-- the cream is pillowy, sweet (with no artificial flavors) and speckled with vanilla bean; the slivers of banana are tender yet firm, and the crust is buttery and flaky. Truly everything I could ask for in a pie. Service is quick. You can choose to dine in, where you can eat a warmed-up pie and admire the kitschy interior (there's a collection of pie tins decorating the wall) or take one to-go-- locals seem to do the latter. They specialize in pie but have a few breakfast options like egg sandwiches and empanadas. There were six pies to choose from; we chose the pecan and the cherry clafoutis. The clafoutis must have been older - it was served cold and it started to clot by the time we'd gotten it, which wasn't very good at all. The pecan pie was one of the better ones I've had in terms of filling (not too sweet) and it had a nice crumbly crust. Next, I want to say Houston, we have a problem! We have a huge problem because as one who frequently visits Ukrainian Village neighborhood, I have to point out that I have never once noticed the logo for Hoosier Mama Pie Company; it is far from eye-catching! Solely for that reason, I had to tell myself before visiting to breathe, Thomas, breathe (Inhale...Exhale...Inhale...Exhale) to release tension because I refuse to get my panties all in a bunch. Hoosier Mama Pie Company is located off of Chicago Ave and Ashland Ave. I recommend keeping an eye out for the Viva Annex because you will find it nearby. Your options for parking are either along Chicago Ave or within the neighborhood. During this visit, I was fortunate enough to find a parking spot near Chicago Ave along N Marshfield Ave which was pay by the plate. It costed only $1.25 for no more than 30 minutes which I did not use entirely because I was in-and-out. I was greeted as soon as I walked inside, and up to the counter to see what is offered on their menu, and on display. I must say that I felt very welcome by the friendly employee as I browsed what is offered. And in the process the employee was informative of prices. As someone who absolutely loves cherry pie, I ended up ordering a slice of Cherry Clafoutis (pronounced klah-foo-TEE) pie out of all other pies on display; the unpitted cherries of this French dessert were easily identifiable for me. Service: 5 (Great) If you wish to dine-in, there is the option for that as well whether it be inside or outside in the patio of this nostalgically decorated cafe which felt very peaceful during my visit. Its option for dine-in took me by surprise because I expected Hoosier Mama Pie Company to be just a bakery, but there you have it, y'all. Atmosphere: 5 (Great) As for the slice of Cherry Clafoutis pie ordered, I must say that I enjoyed its sweet satisfying taste very much! And as I aforementioned being someone who loves cherry pie, I left no signs of it. Hours after eating it, I kid you not the cherry taste still slightly loomed in my mouth.
