The average shopping trip nets about $1000 worth of classroom supplies. Local businesses donate items, and there is always something new. In the several years I have been visiting, I have seen full-size filing cabinets, Thirty-One bags, electric pencil sharpeners, boxes of notebooks, printer paper, huge rolls of art paper, sets of scissors, markers, art supplies, etc. All things that teachers usually pay for out of pocket. They are a blessing to the teachers and students of the area!

What an amazing place to volunteer some of your time to help this organization help others in need…read moreof food. The staff was wonderful to talk to and they explained how the food reaches those in need. They give you instructions on how to help that day. It's a super team activity or you can sign up to volunteer on your own. I hope to come back again with my team. It was a very fulfilling day. Dress comfortable as you will gathering foods and packing them and working in their warehouse. Such an altruistic place. I love what they do for others

The place is more like a fashion agency than a food bank as upper management would rather look good…read morethan do good. I've witnessed multiple people get turned away and not receive food although they can give boxes of non perishable food out at their own discretion. When perishable food is donated it usually sits on a shelf in the cool until it goes bad and then it's discarded. Many project completed by volunteers often go to the wayside as it sits in the warehouse and does not make it to a food pantry before items in the box pass the extended shelf life. Beware!!!

I finally had that opportunity last week and I'm happy to report I learned so much! Parent Network of WNY is a non-profit agency that aims to support families and professionals to empower individuals with disabilities to reach their full potential. This is an amazing resource which provides one-on-one support and education on disabilities, special education, and services to those in Western New York. The website is full of resources and they offer a series of workshops around WNY as well whether at heir office on Main Street or at sites across WNY (Niagara, Cattaraugus, etc). Workshops range from Psychological Testing for Special Education to Bullying and Students with Disabilities to Sensory Processing Disorder to Autism Spectrum Disorders... and many many more. The education/resources they provide is suitable for families of individuals with special needs from birth through adulthood and for professionals. According to their website, they reorganized in 2001 and have since served around 10,000 people a year through their resources, workshops, and support groups. If I learned one thing working as a School Psychologist thus far it's that it can be extremely difficult for families to understand a child's disability and to navigate the support service system. Parent Network of WNY provides one-on-one support for a multitude of topics - IEP process, Early Intervention, Special Education, Transition Planning, Transportation, Systems (Developmental Disabilities, Mental Health), Camps/Community Organizations, Specific Disabilities, etc. and those services are available in both English and other languages if needed. The staff is warm and helpful and their friendly group of volunteers are equally kind and generous with their time.

But they do all sorts of other things too. Classes on a variety of things. Chances for seniors to get out and socialize with others. Group events. More. There's a yearly fee, but it's pretty nominal if you get out more than 2 times a month and used to use taxis. They work out of a few zipcodes in Buffalo, not yet all. So if you live in one of those you are in luck. The execution is where it falls down a little. Even if you put in your request by their "advance notice" deadlines, at times they cannot find a ride. Which is fine if they let you know a few days in advance, but sometimes they only did that a day in advance. That can lead to some scrambling, especially if you can't really take a taxi for whatever reason. So I love the idea. Just wish they had worked out some of the kinks by now.
