A group of 16 of us came to Hopkins for the 5th annual Connecticut wine and cheese festival and we had a blast. First off before I talk about the festival let me review the vineyard itself. It's a large vineyard/ farm and the places is very spacious I would assume they do weddings here due to the decor in the area. They have their distillery here and a gift shop and a small bar where you can taste their feature wines. Fortunately along with 4 more other winery's Hopkins featured their wine in the showcase. For the most part I enjoyed their selection but I'm more into the slightly sweeter wines and they didn't show case those. Now for the festival. Amazing!! So many people attended and they had so many farm showcase their chocolates, breads, meats, wines, cheeses, cookies, and soaps. I enjoyed going around trying the pairings. Overall there were probably more then 15 vendors there. I came home with some meats, cheeses and wines and a couple of us just sat in the garden area and drank and ate. We had a picnic. It's definitely an event I would go back too. Be prepared to drink more then 20 samples of wines and get a little tipsy. Loved this place! read more

Great foods, great atmosphere. Hopkins Inn is a lovely quaint Victorian house overlooking Lake Wauramaug with beautiful landscaping and a vineyard in the back, across the street is a big barn where they sell the wine from their vineyard. I highly recommend this place for eating, especially if you like German fair. read more

This was a great stop on the CT wine tour. The location is beautiful, there was a live band, parking was easy, best part, besides the wine, is Rachel and Doreen. Their knowledge of wine is so impressive. They were both so attentive, which is huge since the bar was full. They were personable and made it a great stop. I loved the shop, I was able to pick up some gifts for upcoming birthdays, that Rachel packaged so beautifully I don't need to wrap them. I'm looking forward to a return trip. read more

Went here two days in a row over Labor Day Weekend and had a great experience. The venue is clean and well decorated and the staff is super friendly. The upstairs part has board games and the woman who served us (Laurie) was so friendly and let us sit up there until after close. I highly recommend to anyone who lives or is staying in the area, or even on a given weekend to stop in. The pesto choices they have to sell are also delicious. Will definitely be coming back! read more

We visited this winery as we were camping nearby, less than a 5 minute drive, at Lake Waramaug State Park. Although this vineyard is "on the lake" there is not a lake view from their outdoor seating area. I'm assuming the lake may be visible from their upstairs tasting room but we did our tasting downstairs. Speaking of our tasting, Evan was our host and was amazing. He was very personable, friendly, and knowledgeable about all of the wines. A few in our party shared that we were not huge red fans and he promised that there was at least one red in the tasting that we would like - and he was right. We tasted about 8-9 wines for around $13 which was a great deal. We ended up getting a bottle of the peach wine and a couple other whites. The property that the winery is on is beautiful - lush, green gardens surround the vineyard along with a small pond and covered trellises. The only downside is that there were only a few sporadic picnic tables outside. It'd be difficult to come here with a large group. All in all, it was a very enjoyable afternoon at this winery - between the great tasting and picturesque grounds. I'm no wine connoisseur but the ones we had tasted pretty good to me! read more

I just had my wedding at this venue this past weekend. I must say it is about the most beautiful location you could ever wish for! Patty and her staff were super accommodating, and the wedding was incredible. I highly recommend this venue to any future brides, or anyone looking to hold a special event. read more

My favorite of the vineyards on the Connecticut wine trail! We went Sunday for the first time in a few years after having a delicious brunch at the nearby White Horse Country Pub (see my review of that for details.) We were pleased to see a new tasting room. The original tasting bar was hosting a wine bottle painting event. Our bartender was very friendly and knowledgeable, and we enjoyed him play the guitar by the wood stove afterwards. Red Barn Red was our favorite. We took home a bottle and also brought home some of their delicious sparkling wine. We ended up going to the tasting room upstairs afterwards, and played Apples to Apples with the kids while they had hot chocolate while overlooking beautiful Lake Waramaug. read more

Somehow I managed to miss that large blue blob on the map when looking up directions to Hopkins. There's a lake! What a beautiful ride and location! Hopkins tasting room is a spacious, open repurposed barn with 3 bars, goods ranging from loathsome wine tzozchkies to local soaps and artisan snacks, and an upstairs seating area where you can order cheese plates. We did a tasting, and I was not excited to see the One Ounce Stopper of Doom on the bottles. Our host was friendly but brief, and the wines were generally just ok. I did like the Riesling, and have always been a fan of Sachem's picnic, having bought it many times in the liquor store. Although we did a quick tasting and left, I could certainly see myself returning some day to share a bottle and enjoy the view. read more

A couple of friends and I were excited to learn that a handful of the Connecticut vineyards stay open through the winter months. Even better, six of the Litchfield County vineyards have established a "Winter Wine Trail." Hopkins was our first stop this past weekend. We tasted 7 wines for $6, and got to keep the souvenir glass. The woman who ran the tasting was very nice. I particularly liked Sachem's Picnic (described as a "light, semi-sweet red"), and took home a bottle of 2009 Westwind (with grapes from upstate New York), as well as a Red Barn Red. The tasting room was comfortable, and featured an upstairs loft area with tables for sitting and snacking. read more

I'm a fan. Been to quite a few Vineyards and something about this one is kinda warm and CT feel. Maybe it's the ride going through Litchfield. Especially in Fall. I would try the Peach, Picnic, or the Ice Wine. Those are my faves. Also good local restaurants around there to grab a bite for lunch or dinner. If you are doing a CT vineyard it's a must try. read more

Beautiful location and beautiful winery - but no customer service or personality...Went to visit with my mother last week and I don't even think we got a hello from the gentleman behind the counter when we walked in, with no other customers there. He said nothing to us - did not offer to help us look for something, or ask us if we had any questions. Went upstairs to see what was up there, and again - just a quick hello from the gentleman behind that counter. We got the impression that we weren't supposed to be up there. We were trying to purchase a few bottles, but the gentleman downstairs disappeared for quite some time so we just left. read more

1st stop on the NW leg of the wine trail. It was spacious with a fairly large gift shop and a cafe upstairs. It's been a month and unfortunately I don't remember the wines at all. I know I didnt hate them and I know I would go back again. Not my best review but it's all I got. read more

We have heard a lot of good things about Hopkins. We had a tasting and then one glass of the Gold Label sparkling wine...The wines were decent...The service was very nice. I'm not sure if we were expecting more from the wines after hearing so much..but we were slightly disappointed. We also purchased a bottle of white...The taste of the wine from the bottle was much different (better) than it was during the tasting...not sure why that was....It is very cute inside, and the upstairs wine bar is neat....worth a visit. read more

Really nice quant winery with some good white wines and a decent view. Parked across the street, went inside for a tasting and then upstairs for a bottle and some relaxation. The white wine was some of the most delicious we have had recently and we ended up buying a bottle. They had a dj which was awkward and he was only downstairs. They need music upstairs and a dj is not a good idea for a winery. Either had someone with a guitar play live or put on xm radio. We hear it's crowded when the weathers nicer out. We stopped in this past weekend after having lunch at the Hopkins Inn. Every one was very pleasant and it was quite busy. The wines were better than expected and we took home a bottle of the peach wine and the Sachem's Picnic. They did the tasting for about 8 of us at one time so it was a little difficult to hear the descriptions when the hostess was at the other end of the bar, but they had detailed tasting notes. read more

They are celebrating their 230th anniversary so we stopped by yesterday. We had a lot of fun in the 90 degree heat. They had a rope making demo, a black smith, and an old fashioned kitchen setup where thery were roasting pit over a pit, baking bread in dutch ovens and popping corn over the fire. There were samples of wine and stories about the history of the farm. A very interesting afternoon. The winery barn is very nice to browse and upstairs there is a small area with tables and chairs to have wine and cheese. Very enjoyable and the ride around the lake afterwards was nice. Worth a stop when you are up in Litchfield County. read more

We rode up on our bikes to the vineyard. The place is beautiful and the staff is very attentive. We showed up on a Sunday and they had a jazz band playing. The vineyard's gift shop has a little bit of everything: souvenirs, bottles of wine ($11-$25), wine tasting ($6), a small cafe with tables, and part of the actual factory. All inside a large barn. It's worth a visit if you ever find yourself leisurely cruising around Lake Warmug on a summer afternoon. read more

My son took me here on Mother's Day, after a terrific meal at the white horse, a couple of miles away, we went to the wine tasting room, and we're given a tour of the wine making process. The staff were terrific and friendly, we tasted some really nice quality wines, amongst them try the Cabernets and the dessert wines. I took 6 bottles home to the city. Even if you do not want a vineyard tour go for the spectacular lake views and enjoy a really stop ther. read more

Of all the vineyards in Connecticut this is one of my favorites. Great atmosphere with award winning wines, and the service is great, the wine bar offers views of Lake Waramaug. We were the only patrons just after opening on a cold November Sunday. A tasting of 7 or 8 wines will run you a mere $7.50, but it was free for us because we were staying at the Sachem farmhouse. We sampled a nice mix of reds and whites, and liked 4 of the wines enough to take home a bottle. I enjoyed browsing the selection of cute country souvenirs and exploring the grounds behind the tasting room as well. read more

We have attended several events at Hopkins, mostly good. However, after skipping the Connecticut Wine and Cheese for several years, we registered and attended the event this past Saturday, we will be hard pressed to attend another one. For $25 per ticket, there were only 4 wine tastings. And one of those offered only 3 Apple Wines! The other three vineyards offered very sweet wine and the entire event was sub-par. Now we remembered why we did not attend the event the past two. read more

This was our first stop on our 2014 wine trail tour. We did the NW trail, which is the closest to our house for right now. I really enjoyed this one. It's a great ride up there, and it has awesome scenery. I gave it 4 stars only because I really liked our bartender. He was AWESOME and super funny, however the wines did not do it for me at all. I was not a fan of any of them to be honest. My boyfriend enjoyed one of the red wines a lot and ended up buying it. I also asked them about cheeses. and the guy told me to go upstairs. When we went up there though, there was no sign of cheese anywhere. Maybe we missed it, but I was a little disappointed. I will return next year in hopes that maybe my taste will change and I'll find something I enjoy. The parking is a little annoying, but its right next to a restaurant I believe. Cute little place, just nothing there for me :( read more

I wouldn't know if I liked it or not... Seems as though if you go on a Saturday late afternoon they are to busy to notice you would like a tasting! I found the same thing with Haight Brown Vineyard as well. It's great that they are busy... but it was a long drive to not even get a " I'll be with you as soon as I can"... or some form of acknowledgment! I have been to Jonathan Edwards and Salt Water Farm Vineyards, both busy, yet we're able to take the time. If I was new to The Ct Wine Trail and these were my first stops I would probably never venture out on the trail again! But I have loved my experience up to this point so I will continue to follow the trail and enjoy many more vineyards to come! read more

Ok it is not Napa or Sonoma but it was a delightful Sat excursion and the wines I tasted were a lot better than some of the mass produced blah wine I have tasted It is CT and growing grapes is not easy My hostess was charming and the wine info was spot on I am happy to support a CT industry with a scenic lake to look at Nice snacks were available as was a great view Totally enjoyed the experience read more

Very nice weekend day trip. Check when they have music. It was terrific to buy a bottle, some cheese and crackers inside and sit outside and enjoy the live music. Wine tasting at a half ounce each was a bit underwhelming but will gives you enough information to decide which that you prefer. Nice people and venue. Do it. I think you will enjoy it as a unique CT experience and it's a lot closer than Sonoma. read more

Beautiful property right near Lake Waramaug; afternoon of kayaking followed by wine tasting... that's the good life baby! Tasting area kinda small and not well staffed considering prime time of year and beautiful weather; had to wait about 10 minutes to get a spot at the bar. Wines were delicious, only complaints would be the stingy samples (barely enough to taste the wine), guy serving us was not able to answer some of my questions and they have a nice room upstairs with a gorgeous view to sit down but don't really serve food. My boyfriend and I needed lunch and all they had were cheese platters. That said, we ordered a $27 cheese platter that included 5 different cheeses, nice cracker assortment, a pate, tomato compote and baby gherkins, it was bang'n, and weren't able to finish it. read more

They expanded maybe about a year ago. The tasting room is much larger now. It's in a nice area with beautiful views. There were some good wines. I have always loved Sachem's Picnic. There is a room upstairs to enjoy a glass of wine and order a cheese platter. read more

Stopped in here on Sunday after going to another vineyard with undrinkable wine. This place was so nice! The staff was so friendly and extremely helpful. The wines were very good and we went back to Brooklyn with several bottles. Highly recommend stopping at this Vineyard if you are doing a trip in Connecticut. read more

I work at a vineyard in California, so I have high expectations for wineries in general. I was very impressed with Hopkins! The tasting and service was amazing! I'm a huge fan of their Ice Dessert Wine. It isn't a part of the tasting, but I highly recommend adding it on. Loved the venue and I would 100% go back if I'm in the area again! read more
