My review here is long overdue. I've been here quite a few times over the years and each time we really enjoyed it. My bf loves the coffee here. Anything of their espresso drinks either hot or cold has always turned out yummy, according to him. I'm more of a matcha person since my stomach issues years ago so as a matcha snob, I can say their matcha is strong here but the only down side is they only have almond milk as their alternative to dairy. And, I think they make the almond milk in-house, aka fresh, so there is no hint of sweetness at all. If you know, almond milk does alternate the flavor of your drink so I did not like the iced matcha almond milk I had very much. I would get their default matcha, it's perfect. One thing that deserves a huge shout out here is the avocado toast!! OH EM GEE! It's one of the best we've ever had! Each toast is on a thick sourdough, packed with tons and tons of smashed avocado, with asiago cheese and pancetta (fancy bacon), and lemon. AND, you need to add their soft boiled egg. I honestly had a little bit of a cultural shock--in the best way! As someone who absolutely loves matcha and coffee, I was surprised that I had never heard of this place before. It has such a unique vibe. It's located around Downtown Santa Ana, and the sign isn't very big, so it can be a little hard to find. Honestly, I'm glad I came with my friends because if I had come by myself, I probably would have missed it and gone home. The atmosphere is definitely different from your typical Orange County coffee shop. I heard the owners are from New York, and I think you can feel that influence. It has a very urban, sophisticated feel, but at the same time, there's something warm yet slightly cool and edgy about the space. It's hard to explain, but it has a personality of its own. The coffee bar is completely open, so you can watch the baristas make your drink and see every little movement they make. I wanted to try so many things on the menu, but I had already had two cups of coffee that day, so I decided to go with matcha instead. What really impressed me was how detailed they were when taking my order. They asked about the sweetness level, syrup options, type of milk, and even the type of cup I wanted. Since I was staying to enjoy my drink there, they served my matcha in a beautiful glass. And watching them make the matcha right in front of me was such a treat. It wasn't just some sweet matcha powder mixed with milk. You could really taste the quality of the matcha, and the drink was clean, smooth, and delicious. Santa Ana is a little far from my home, so I don't come here very often. But this place made me want to come back someday, take my time, and just enjoy a cup of matcha without rushing. Hopper & Burr is definitely a staple in the Downtown Santa Ana area-- a clean, minimalist (hipster) space with genuinely good coffee and some creative offerings, making for a solid specialty coffee shop. I believe their espresso leans toward a lighter roast, coming through bright and expressive, while the milk drinks are dialed in with that smooth, silky texture that makes you want to savor. That said, the drinks don't always scratch the itch for me in the way I might expect but it might just be that their speciality drinks aren't quite what I typically look for. Nonetheless I do still think they have a strong coffee program and a team that clearly cares about craft. read more

This coffee shop has been on my list forever, so when I was in the area I finally stopped in to try it--and I'm glad I did. It's such a cute spot. The space is really bright and calm with a ton of seating, and there were lots of people working on laptops, so it definitely feels like a good place to hang out for a while. What I loved most was the neighborhood vibe. People were greeting the barista by name and saying "see you next time" when they left, which made it feel like one of those local spots everyone secretly wants as their regular coffee shop. The barista was super friendly too and chatted with me while making my drink. I ordered the iced vanilla latte and it was great--smooth and not overly sweet (which is rare because vanilla lattes can easily taste like dessert). I stopped here for a coffee while in downtown Santa Ana. It was my second time having a coffee here. It's a nice, simply designed coffee shop. The coffee was good. The ambiance was pleasant. It's clearly a local gathering place as people were holding meetings here (in addition to socializing). That sense of a community center is something that I like in a coffee shop. The gentleman who served me my coffee was pleasant and efficient. The reason for the 4 (vs. 5) star review is because the seating was okay, but not that comfortable. The upkeep of the coffee shop wasn't that great. Dishes were piling up in a corner of the counter and the restroom needed some routine maintenance work. The staff here was genuinely friendly and welcoming, and the space itself was very clean and well kept, which we appreciated. Unfortunately, the drinks didn't sit well with us. The person I was with ordered the Honey Latte and ended up with a pretty bad stomach ache for the rest of the day afterward. It seemed like they didn't react well to some of the ingredients, which obviously affected the overall experience. Because of that, we weren't able to really enjoy our drinks. It's disappointing because the atmosphere and service were great, the drinks just weren't a hit for us personally. The barista said "no" frequently when we asked for a vanilla flavored latte, or oat milk, so I felt a little put off, but settled on the honey coffee drink and a latte with brown sugar -- both with almond milk. We were too early for the ricotta and jam toast, since their kitchen doesn't open until 8am ... so we noticed that there was a pastry display, and ordered the scone, which was delicious. This isn't my first time at Hopper & Burr, and this place never disappoints. The atmosphere is always great and makes it an easy spot to relax and enjoy your drink. The only downside--not the coffee shop's fault--is parking. There's sometimes a lucky spot right out front, but this time it was taken by a food truck. There is paid street parking nearby, though, which is $4 for two hours, so it's manageable if you plan ahead. Now for the star of the show: the coffee. I ordered their seasonal Cafe Nico, made with espresso, cream, orange, and cinnamon, and it was incredible. If you enjoy orange flavors, this is an absolute must-try. Even though I usually lean toward pour-overs and don't often order specialty drinks like this, it completely won me over. The flavors were well balanced and really stood out. I also grabbed a cookie, and it was excellent--the chocolate tasted high quality and paired perfectly with the coffee. I'm very much an americano or black drip coffee kind of girl and not very into overly sweet lattes with a bunch of syrup. But sometimes I feel like getting a treat and trying something new too! Hopper and Burr satisfies that very specific itch for me because they have speciality coffees that are not necessarily lattes. You can tell they actually get creative to come up with unique drinks. I also like that they have a seasonal menu. This time I got their colossal wreck. The barista literally cut the peel of a brand new lemon to add the oil from the peel to my drink. My favorite drink from Hopper and Burr was another seasonal drink called Nico No 2(?) Where they sliced an orange peel to add the oil to my drink as well. Super cute little spot right at the heart of DTSA. The decor inside is very minimalist and chic. Cute tattooed boys at the register that are super friendly. I like that they make small conversation with you. They recommended the Nico for me. I ordered mine with almond milk. Such unique flavors! What intrigued us the most was the root beer, which was a homemade root beer topped with espresso. I was definitely surprised by the combination - I didn't expect the two to work so well together! But it's probably an acquired taste, so if your tastebuds are less brave, I probably wouldn't order it. SERVICE: Amazing! You can tell they're taking their time and emphasizing quality. A local bartender recommended this place and wasn't disappointed. It's a studio style coffee bar with lots of open space to study or just relax. The barista there was good at explaining what was on the menu and how things were made inhouse including their nut milks. I got the iced mocha with almond milk and I can tell from flavor and texture that indeed it was made inhouse because I've made almond milk at home and the little extra texture of the almond milk is evident so definitely everything is made on location so it's fresh. I got an almond milk latte but the coffee was so bad!! There was a sour after taste which I don't know if it was from the espresso shot itself or the almond milk. I also noticed the pastries box had a bunch of bugs flying around in it which was unsanitary. Service was nice though. I love Hopper & Burr! I've been coming here for the better part of 8 years, I think. The surrounding neighborhood has changed so much, but this stalwart of a coffee shop has remained. First off, ordering is a breeze, and it feels so open, conceptually. You order with the barista up front near the espresso machine. From their standard 'spros and teas to their seasonal offerings, you really can't go wrong! I usually go with a flat white or an espresso tonic, and they are wonderful here. The flat white is a clean, no nonsense drink that I love better than a latte, because it's more coffee-forward, but still with a good amount of milk. The tonic is wildly different: espresso with tonic water, and orange flavoring. Refreshing, fizzy, and tropical! Get this if you love soda and love coffee and don't mind expanding your horizons! Super disappointed. Wanted a place to study for a few hours while drinking coffee. Drove over here. Its either metered street parking or parking garage. I was craving sweet iced coffee. They didn't have very many selections so we went with 2 brown sugar latte with almond milk. I believe it's 1.75 extra per drink for the in-store almond milk, but it wasn't worth it. Our drinks were a light mustard color and curdled within 30 seconds and it tasted horrible. Barely any coffee taste or brown sugar taste. The only thing that was decent was the type of ice they used. Knowing I was going to be there for several hours, I wasn't willing to sit there with a full cup of coffee that I couldn't drink. We asked for a replacement and got brown sugar latte with regular milk and that was just a slight bit better but I still didnt finish half of it. I watched the barista make several drinks. They use very simple ingredients but I dont get how this place is so busy. Unfortunately, I was reminded why I needed to go to Bolsa for some good coffee and when you can make better coffee at home, that's a bad sign for the business. The barista told me it would be avail during fall time. They do rotations often.
