The space was spacious enough for the size of the wedding, and everything flowed well throughout the evening. For smaller events, the parking lot is sufficient, but I could see it getting tight for larger events here. One thing to keep in mind is that renting this venue appears to cover only the building itself. My aunt mentioned they paid by the hour for the venue and also had to rent the tables and chairs separately, as well as arrange and pay for the catering. The bar was located in the back and was cash only or their wedding. The wedding turned out beautifully, and the venue provided a charming backdrop for a memorable day. I believe my cousin had swing dancing events here, so they also host a variety of activities.

McGowan Hall is a community and event center located in the Old Northside neighborhood of Indy…read more McGowan Hall was built in 1922 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. I had the chance to visit McGowan Hall recently for a local memorial event. It's a unique setting that immediately made me curious about its history. The grounds originally had a Romanesque chateau completed in 1874. The home was designed by noted architect William LeBaron Jenney, who helped rebuild Chicago after the fire of 1871. Neighbors included president Benjamin Harrison and best selling hoosier author Meredith Nicholson. Subsequent owner of the chateau mansion, Dr. Horace Allen, hosted a party for Levi Morton of New York, who would become Benjamin Harrison's vice-presidential running mate. Harrison's home was not large enough to accommodate the affair. The home was acquired by Hugh J. McGowan, a railway magnate, in 1903. He lived there until his death in 1911. His daughters were known to perform amateur plays with Booth Tarkington in the 3rd floor ballroom. The McGowan family stayed in the home until 1919 when Mrs. McGowan sold the property to the Knights of Columbus (Hugh McGowan had been a member). Finally, in 1922, McGowan Hall was built and adjoined the home. The hall featured a 90'x60' ballroom with balcony seating and a stage. Downstairs had meeting area, billiard, shower, and cloak rooms. The hall hosted the first Knights of Columbus Council in Indiana (Mater Dei Knights of Columbus Council #437). To this day, they meet in the hall. In 1963, the home was torn down. However, the hall remained. The hall continues to host a wide variety of community, charitable, and civic events including theatre productions, fundraisers, high school dances, holiday parties, workshops, AA/NA meetings, neighborhood gatherings, and more. You can rent the Grand Hall (5,000sf of floor space), Council Room (seats up to 120), and an incredible, very vintage lounge that can easily seat 50. While McGowan Hall has some accessibility issues, typical for historic landmarks, there is an accessible entrance to the Grand Hall (550 capacity, around 400 with seating/tables). This is a solid mid-sized venue that I think often gets overlooked here in Indy. It's a beautiful facility, though anyone with accessibility needs should be sure to mention that before renting to ensure the need can be met. For attending a Grand Hall event, I had no issues. However, other areas would definitely have some challenges

For the reception they use their own bartenders and I'm not sure if the bride and groom choose the alcohol but the choices were slim pickings! They thankfully had tequila but there was only blanco (which isn't my fav) so I had to suck it up lol. If you're wanting a one stop shop this venue seemed to cater great for it. The food was ok. It was edible which is a plus and whatever beef they put out was by far the most tender beef I had ever had!!!! It was practically falling apart and was by far the best part of the meal. If you need a venue check it out it's gorgeous and they have a lot of different packages.

Dressing Rooms:To start, even though we paid for access to the dressing rooms, it was like pulling teeth just to get them to let us use them. Mind you, our wedding was the only wedding booked that day, so there was no reason they couldn't accommodate us, especially since we had paid for the rooms. We were originally told to arrive at 3:30 p.m. dressed and ready, with no access to the dressing rooms. After multiple emails back and forth, they finally agreed to let my husband use his room for a measly 30 minutes, while I believe I had access to mine for around three hours. Once we got into the dressing rooms, we quickly understood why they didn't want to give us access. There was absolutely no AC and only one working outlet. Their solution was to run multiple extension cords throughout the room. My hair and makeup artists had a hell of a time trying to work around everything. Communication: Communication with clients definitely needs to improve. For example, finding out that our wedding coordinator was leaving only a month or two before our wedding was something that should have been communicated to us directly. I also feel that additional training in communication, professionalism, and politeness would benefit the staff. In particular, the main coordinator who handled our wedding after Karlie left was not someone we had a positive experience with. I found some of our interactions with her to be unnecessarily rude and frustrating. Ushers/Guest Direction:If you have not hired ushers for your wedding, I highly recommend doing so. We were told there would be someone up front to direct guests and that there would be a sign in front of the door directing people to our wedding. Neither of those things happened. It was so bad that I had guests constantly texting both me and my husband while we were getting ready and taking pictures, asking which room our wedding was in because there was no one up front to tell them where to go. Ceremony:This is where I would absolutely recommend that if you have any music playing during your ceremony, have your personally hired DJ handle it. Do not leave this responsibility to Valle Vista. I can almost guarantee you will either have songs go completely unplayed or, even worse, find yourself standing awkwardly at the altar waiting for the exit music to play. We were also told that the ceremony room's airflow could be managed so it wouldn't get too hot. One staff member even told us, "It has fans and AC, so it stays cool." If you are planning a summer wedding, just be warned: that room is going to be hot. Photography:God bless the sweet busboy who spent over 15 minutes sweeping the gondola with the tiniest broom. The area where we were supposed to have our first look was covered in poop. My photographer literally had to edit poop out of multiple photos. I can also guarantee that my large bridal gown with a train had poop on it before I even walked down the aisle. I will say that the second gondola we took pictures at after the ceremony was much better maintained, so I do appreciate that. Reception:Unfortunately, the AC continued to be a HUGE problem during the reception. Multiple guests, including the bride and groom, repeatedly had to ask for the AC to be turned up. It was so hot that I ended up having to change into my more breathable dress, which was originally only supposed to be worn for our first dance. I was incredibly sad that I couldn't wear my wedding dress for the entire evening, especially after spending so much money on it. We literally paid the facility thousands of dollars because we wanted AC for our black-tie wedding. Having the temperature be such a significant issue throughout the day was extremely disappointing. The Positives:I do want to take the time to mention that there are employees who genuinely care about their jobs and will do whatever they can to make your wedding day special. Your chef and kitchen staff were amazing. They were incredibly accommodating to our gluten-free, dairy-free, and allergy-related needs. It meant so much to me that everyone in our family was able to eat and enjoy the food, and you made that possible. For that, I am truly grateful. Overall:I am not writing this review to bash Valle Vista. I am writing it because I want to be honest about our experience and hopefully warn other couples so they can be prepared. At the end of the day, we spent thousands of dollars trusting Valle Vista with a day we can never get back. There were definitely employees who went above and beyond, and we are grateful for those individuals. However, there were also several issues that significantly impacted our wedding day and left us feeling disappointed. I hope Valle Vista takes this feedback seriously and uses it as an opportunity to improve communication, maintenance, staffing, and overall guest experience for future couples.

Started by Julie and Dan Johnston, VisionLoft is a beautiful space that is ideal for business events, wedding receptions, and a number of other special events that would benefit from a comfortable atmosphere and strong tech (You'd be amazed how hard that combination is to find). This is located in downtown Indy, of course, and is adjacent to Wheeler Mission (It works. Let your biases go.). You enter through a two-sided glass doorway. There's a beautiful fireplace and bar area, wood floors, a greenery area, modern seating (clear, quietly dignified), and as someone who was a speaker during the event I liked that I didn't have to go up on a stage. VisionLoft utilizes several caterers as options including some right from Mass Avenue. The event I attended utilizes Nameless Catering, a caterer I've been familiar with and a caterer I've long appreciated. People were friendly, the atmosphere was comfortable, and service was strong throughout. Parking can be along nearby streets or parking garages (it's all paid). For those getting married in nearby churches or on Monument Circle, this would be an amazing reception option. I did not try the restrooms, though they are labeled as accessible and there's an obvious effort at accessibility at both front and back entrances (odds are the back entrance is ramped also for the caterers). Where I feel obligated to drop what would definitely be a 5-star review is in that area of accessibility. Even upon arrival (before the crowd), moving around was a tad difficult given the table layout. Once people arrived? It was close to impossible - this created the inability to really enjoy the food (or even get to it) and the bar. By the end of the event, I was starved and hit Mass Avenue (fortunately, a close journey of 1-2 blocks). As someone who deals with accessibility on a daily basis, I saw easy tweaks that could have been done to ensure everyone could enjoy the space. It seems like the intention was there, however, in terms of accessibility it definitely fell a bit short (I don't have this experience at Stutz, by the way. It's clear this company cares about access because they went way above and beyond at Stutz). Overall, this is a beautiful space that I definitely recommend. The atmosphere is modern yet also personal and and warm. The high-tech features are great. The acoustics worked quite well for speakers. The proximity to major downtown attractions is for sure awesome. I would definitely return, however, I might shy away from a sold-out or I might simply encourage some advanced planning to improve accessibility.

Bathrooms were tidy, coffee was plentiful as were sodas and waters throughout the day, and it's walkable to the City Market which makes taking a tasty lunch break easy to do. The venue is advertised as all-inclusive, but there are very limited options when it came to things like dinnerware and decor. Our wedding colors were ivory, gold, and various greens, yet the disposable dinnerware was black with silver plasticware, and the china was white. We had to purchase our own plates, bowls, gold plasticware, and 80 goblets to match our tablescape. After the wedding, we were told all of our unused items had been placed in a box for us. Instead, we received one dirty plate, bowls, and spoons. There were no goblets and no clean dinner or cake plates. We had a guest count of around 60, we purchased 80 of each thing. We should have had 20 extra of each plate, and 20 extra goblets, and none were to be found. After contacting them, they eventually shipped some items back. Including two plates, two goblets, our napkins, and one fork. Yes, you heard that right. They individually wrapped a plastic fork. Very petty if you ask me. The DJ experience was also extremely disappointing. We had multiple meetings where we clearly communicated that we wanted an upbeat, energetic wedding with guest engagement. During the ceremony, my entrance song ended while I was still walking down the aisle, the officiants' microphones repeatedly cut out, and our exit music was barely audible. The DJ and coordinator had different entrance orders, causing confusion. During dinner, the DJ played techno when we had specifically requested swing music and she even told my mom she didn't know what swing music was. During dancing, there was little to no engagement with the guests, and we were later told this was the DJ's first wedding (by the Dj herself) We also discovered food, wine, ink stains and rips on multiple linens while steaming them ourselves before the wedding day. (Yes, they don't steam their linens. They are creased horribly) Thankfully, we caught them before the wedding began and they were replaced. Our decor options were also very limited. We were told that if we wanted to incorporate calla lilies (our wedding flower) we would have to donate them to the venue. We did so, only to have them mixed into other flowers where they were barely noticeable. We ended up decorating our own head table to make it better fit our wedding. The bridal and groom suites also did not have private bathrooms, and those bathrooms only had air dryers, which could cause spotting with satin dresses. Approximately a week after the wedding, my parents were contacted and told that the final payment check they had already provided (a month before the wedding) was missing, supposedly lost by the bank. Having to deal with a missing payment after the wedding was over was another unnecessary stress. Finally, the venue is directly next to the family's mortuary. We were completely unprepared to see our wedding names displayed on the outdoor screen as "Congrats! Jonah & Kaitlynn. Jones Family Mortuary." That was an incredibly uncomfortable surprise that we absolutely would have wanted to know about before booking. We understand that no wedding is perfect, and we are not expecting perfection. What we did expect was professionalism, communication, attention to detail and honesty. And upon explaining all of these issues to Olivia and Tricia, we were told that they got told completely different things. Showing that there are dishonest people working for them. Unfortunately, there were too many issues before, during, and after our wedding for us to recommend this venue based on our experience. Our wedding was still beautiful because of our family, friends, and the memories we made together. But if we could choose our venue again knowing what we know now, we would make a different choice.

There are several bars throughout and abundant space for a dance floor. I always enjoy hanging out in the balcony and looking down at the stage and crowd.

The ceilings are high, too, so you don't feel claustrophobic at all, even with all the people in one room. 5 East is located in downtown Mooresville, right next door to Zydeco's. This building used to house an antique store, and then a hardware store before that. It has a bit of history to it.
