Some of the best fish and chip's I've had in the UK (fish was great and the chips tasted triple-fried; amazing). Great selection of draft ales and ciders. Nice staff and clientele (not standoffish even though we're obviously not from these parts). I loved the big flag-stones in the pub and the open fire places; was cozy and inviting inviting. I started with the stilton mushrooms followed by the fish and chips. Finished off with a yummy crumble. If you are looking for a quiet place to eat with nice food then this is the place to go. I will be back again in the near future. One more thing to mention is that they do have various saver deals which make the meals very affordable. Yes it will cost maybe £10 more than harvester for two people but it is worth the extra.

The only trouble I had is that although it is in the middle of nowhere the road is quite busy and my room was nearest it and therefore very busy. Unfortunately as we had to be up at 5am we didn't get to try their breakfast but the selection looked fantastic. Bewarned if you arrive out of pub hours, they lock up and it can take a while to get someone to open the pub and check you in!

And they have an excellent kids menu, which delighted our picky eater. The one and only downside is the extortionate prices of some of the drinks. I seem to remember a pint of Heineken clocking in at £3.90...thanks, but no thanks. The house wine selection is much better value at £12.50 and they seem to have put some effort into selecting decent bottles. I'd heard such great things about the food as well that I decided to sample a burger a couple of weeks ago. Freshly made with good quality meat, it was as good as I'd hope(d and anchored) for. Good sized portions and a particularly good sunday lunch service. There's a big focus on ales, with options changing all the time and plenty I hadn't seen before, again not fantastically cheap. Lovely beer garden though very much a smokers retreat until the summer months. The Hope and Anchor is a nice stop off before a hike over Brandon Hill or a good somewhere to get a filling meal.

Even our "Rick Steves approved" B&B didn't tell us about this place…read more THESE are the types of local pubs that SHOULD be mentioned in a Rick Steves book... but then it would be filled with tourists...and would lose its local charm. Great pub, as everyone eating and drinking there were locals. Food was FRESH and HOT. Unbelievabley cheap prices. I really hesitate to give this place a good review... as I want to keep it a secret ;-)
