But still, this place sells crisps, sweets, magazines, newspapers, skins, tobacco and a full range of alcoholic beverages right through the early hours of the night. It's a popular venue for picking up a few beers in the way home from the pub if you can fit a few more in your gullet! It's slightly more pricey than your average off licenses, but I guess you'll pay it if there's nowhere else to go. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the beers chilled so I'd recommend this place to all the drinkers of the night!

They have a bill paying facility which is very useful. The staff are very friendly and helpful and make you feel very welcome. There is definitely a lovely community feel to Lark Lane Newsagents. If you happen pop in then look out for the homemade scones on the counter. They are made by the lady who runs the shop with her husband and they are simply the nicest scones I have tried in a very very long time!!

Obviously in reality I'll probably never find one like this, especially in Lydiate, but I'll always live in fear of Tubbs appearing from behind the counter. As it is, Lydiate Village Store is a great place to go if you're looking for some essentials and you can't be arsed trekking to the supermarket, for fear of seeing someone you know or just because you're worried you might get lost in there. They offer a good range of goods including frozen foods, tinned goods, bread and milk as well as beverages of the alcoholic variety, perfect for those nights when you don't fancy a supermarket trip or an off-licence either. The prices are usually a little bit more expensive than the supermarkets but you're paying for the convenience of having it around the corner and all in one small shop, so I guess you can't really complain, can you?

Yes - this is the very closest place to pick up some sweeties before you go to see a film at the lovely FACT. If you want a decent selection of sugary snack foods to munch whilst you viddy a flicker show at the ol' cineplex then this is your last chance saloon. And bold as that may sound, it is a fact.

It's the kind of overtly and comically monopolistic corporation you get in a sci-fi dystopia, except it's real. Stories of Tesco's ruthless campaign to eradicate every other business from the acreage of Britain can be found in local newspapers all across the nation. That comes as a given of course because to Tesco, everything is local. They've saturated every postcode in the country. However, the really infuriating thing about this particular branch, and what I assume is the crux of the whole problem, is that it's just so damn convenient. With its automatic check-outs and selection of handy goods, it's perfect for breezing in and out of but you'll hate yourself afterwards. People can whine on about how stinkingly evil the business is but so long as the remaining millions are flocking through the aisles, they're basically trying to shout down a hurricane. They should know by now the slogan 'Every Little Helps' doesn't apply to those who avoid Tesco.

It means if you just have a few bits to pick up you don't have to trek miles round a superstore just for those few bits. Even more conveniently, you don't even have to converse with the staff due to the self service checkouts. You can get your shopping, serve yourself and be away in no time at all. Another convenient thing, the store is open 6am-11pm 7 days a week so when the other stores close on Sunday around tea time, this Tesco Express stays open till late evening.

Chimond News manages to carry most of the basics for such a small shop, so if you need your newspaper or magazine you can probably find it here, and you can certainly find cold drinks and snacks. Once you enter inside, the interior of the shop is similarly old-fashioned, reminding you of a corner shop from some kind of 70s comedy programme like 'Open All Hours'. Despite this, Crusty Cob does have its charms as they offer a wide range of items all available in one shop for your convenience. They offer the usual selection of household essentials and tinned goods at a fairly reasonable price but as usual, you end up paying slightly more because you don't have to traipse around the local supermarket for hours. Handily, they also sell a range of Satterthwaites pies and cakes, all of which are freshly made and very delicious; well worth the small price you have to pay for them and perfect for a little treat for yourself of a lunchtime if you have a sweet tooth.

It's easy to get as there is a ramp & automatic doors but it's very hard to get around the store with a pram & I can't imagine anyone in a wheelchair getting round there. They always have the aisles cluttered up with various stacks of beer/drinks/ baskets with special offers in. They have stuff really crammed in. The staff are nice but sometimes they are understaffed & there isn't a lot of room to que which makes it even harder to get around the store. They have some good offers on at times but normally the food is more expensive but it is a convenience store rather than somewhere you go for a full weeks shopping. They have a pay point machine, cash machine outside & a good selection of wines & also fair trade products.
