Located conveniently in front of the colosseum gladiatore is a fairly good restaurant. It's not anything to write home about, however the service was great and the location is wonderful. We ordered the shrimp and zucchini gnocchi and the seafood risotto. The gnocchi was yummy and the shrimp was sweet. The seafood risotto was good however a little on the salty side, but solid nonetheless. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a pretty view and a decent meal! read more

Beware of this tourist trap. We went with our family this summer. The location was great, right next to the Colosseum. I knew it would be expensive because of the location. But, unlike every other place we went to in Rome, these waiters/manager harass tourists for tips. Nowhere else in Rome are tips even requested. These guys handwrote "tip" with a blank and then told me, intentionally loud enough for my whole family to hear, "Be sure to add a tip." A moment later, he added, "at least 20%!". Ironically, I was going to be the only one who would've tipped because that's what we do in the US. Every other restaurant in Rome was wonderful, the food was better and the service was better. I voluntarily chose to tip each place, and I was thanked profusely. Clearly, tipping is not the norm. But this place browbeats you to tip and does it in a classless disgusting way. They also had a street musician come to the outdoor tables, play 2 songs (very poorly), and then they pressure you to tip him. Clearly, they are in cahoots with that guy. STAY AWAY! read more

After walking around the coliseum and the Rome forum in the hot sun like your typical tourist, it was nice to be able to sit down at a nice Italian restaurant that is within walking distance. We were even seated across the door view of the coliseum, which we admired while we ate. The servers here were really nice and welcoming. I get the idea that most people who work at restaurant establishments gets a ton of tourists everyday, yet they made time to ask where we were from and some small conversation. Since I haven't had authentic spaghetti in Italy, I decided it was time to order spaghetti with meatballs while it was my last day in Rome. It was tasty, and they brought over a dish of grated cheese. I can't remember the wine I ended up with, but it was the waitress' recommendation and she made a fabulous choice for me! Well it certainly has location going for itself, but not a lot more. Service was poor, food wasn't very good save my daughter's fettuccine Alfredo. And very expensive! I'll leave it at this, if you also find yourself famished after a long day in the heat walking around the coliseum and need lunch in a bad way, do yourself a solid and go somewhere else. The waiters were great but then when the bill came the charges were crazy and because were American they wrote in tip I said no on the tip knowing in Italy you don't tip like America, the owner or person taking in the receipt was very upset but again I've researched this and it is not customary to tip in Italy. The food was not good, hot items were cold. The staff was arguing and our waiter was consistently rude. They don't wear name tags (no surprise). . Most important the bathroom is coed and a total train wreck. Three toilets and no seat, see below. We were looking forward to having breakfast. The portions are unbelievably small. Pancake breakfast was 1 small, tiny pancake. For comparison, smaller than 1 McDonald's hotcake. I've gotta say looking at the negative reviews surprises me. My husband and I were on our way to the coliseum when at the last minute we decided to grab a bite first. We were seated right away and the placed looked clean. We did go around 12 and based on the location I'm wondering if some of the bathroom comments correspond with all of the customers they get from the coliseum tours- so maybe in the evening or later they may have already had a lot of customers frequenting their bathrooms? My husband used the men's restroom and said it was clean. Our food came out timely and if there had been a wait, it would have been well worth it! The only thing I would point out to first time visitors is that not all pizzas are served in the "traditional sauce or cream". All of the food was delicious and served perfectly. BATHROOMS DISGUSTING!!!! I was skeptical going to this place, being that it is so close to the Colosseum. However, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of food & service. They have an amazing lunch special that is an incredible deal. All of the good dining was shattered by the horrible bathrooms. The strong smell of urine was nauseating, and my shoes were sticky while walking on the floor -- sooooooo gross. If you go here you will have a great time if you don't have to use the bathroom!!! We had the most incredible experience eating lunch at Hostaria Al Gladiatore. This was the best food and service I've had since arriving in Italy 13 days ago. We had the ravioli, gnocchi, Bellinis, Raspberry Mules, tiramisu, and strawberries & ice cream. All was delicious and the service was impeccable. Worst meal in all of Rome in the past 5 years. I come to Rome every year and have eaten in a lot of places, ranging from sketchy ones to really nice ones. BUT this place is the first bad meal I've ever had. Yes, random kebab place or pizza/focaccia place is more satisfying than this restaurant. The meatballs are hard and dry like my toes due to years of kung fu training. The lasagna is like layers of pasta box cardboard layered with Ragu sauce from American supermarkets. I make better spaghetti from boiling my pubic hairs than what is served at this place. The panna cotta is as tasteless as my sense of humor -- which is quite tasteless! And they charged me 4 euro for a caffe macchiato that is normally 90 cents at a cafe/bar. Yes there is a premium for coffee at table service but really 4x more? A complete rip off. read more
