Everything, from boquerones (lightly fried large sardines) to patatas bravas to pulpo (octopus) has been perfect every time. And the prices are fantastic at 6 euro for a plate of boquerones and 3 euro for the patatas bravas. But by far our favorite is the made to order paella mixto. Jorge puts love into his cooking, and this, and his fresh seafood and vegetables, keep us coming. Ack year after year. It is always our first meal when we reach torrevieja, our home away from home.

Unlike what I had in Madrid or New York, they don't mix chicken and seafood in Alicante and Valencia. I told the owner that her food is better than that in Jose Andres' Mercado Little Spain in Hudson Yards, and Angelita was very pleased. But I am sincere. La Tartana prepares arroz for individual groups, while paella in Mercado Little Spain is for the mass. Also I was told that water in Alicante is suitable for arroz. Angelita invited us to see the kitchen, and I was amazed by the operation. It was run by her, her husband, and three sisters. The kitchen is very clean, cleaner than mine where I don't even cook! She explained to us different broths and cookware for various arroz. Her sisters said that it's hotter than 40 degree celsius, or 105 Ferenheit. I could feel it. The family certainly takes pride in their food. I told them that I would return to Alicante just for la Tartana''s delicious arroz, and I certainly will.

This is one of their three locations and it is less busy than the one in the city center (other locations are on their website, just added it to the listing). The food and the prices are the same in all three restaurants. Tried pork knuckle, stroganoff beef and chicken, smoked salmon salad and bread with ham (all pictured). Everything tasted great and freshly made. They bake their own buns, really enjoyed them. I think the sauces they served (ali-oli and tomato) were also made here, tasted differently from what I tried in other places. Red house wine was fine. Tiramisu desert was delicious! They say they are an international cuisine restaurant - a bit of everything from everywhere. The menu is quite long and I was surprised all meals were available. One can visit several times and try different food. I will definitely be back! P.S. Cards accepted, free WiFi, parking is easy and free UPDATE (5 hours later): I will never remember the name of the restaurant :-) I typed it several times in pics' captions, wrote a review and shared it all over the place. I started with a rice cake they call a soccorat (like the paella crust) topped with a tartare of the sweetest and freshest prawn. Superb! Next was a peeled whole tomato stuffed with a mousse of cured ventresca (tuna belly) and served atop a tomato soup like a creamy gazpacho. Another winning dish that takes familiar ingredients and through technique makes them special and elevated. The next tapa was a skewer with a single langoustine tail crusted with the Turkish strands you often find in middle eastern desserts. The langoustine tail was stuffed with a little portion of melted Brie cheese. So good. The last tapa was octopus pieces atop wonderfully browned potatoes that managed to be both crisp on the outside and meltingly tender inside. Superb. For dessert I took the server's recommendation and had the apple dessert, which was a sort of deconstructed apple tart that was the essence of apple. They comped me a generous shot or two of a beautiful local dessert wine. Service was gracious and helpful. The prices are treasonable for food of this quality. I really enjoyed my meal here!
