I was really bummed when I was not able to get tickets to Hot Luck Fest when they first started selling tickets on Eventbrite. However, Eater SF announced that tickets for an afternoon session was going to be sold on a Fri at 12 noon. You'd better believe I was waiting at my computer to purchase tickets at exactly noontime. I was lucky enough to get tickets that sold out in a few minutes.
Hot Luck Fest was started by Aaron Franklin and a few other chefs from Texas and Portland. It is held in Austin every year during Memorial Day weekend. They have pop ups in other cities as well. Oakland's 4505 Burgers and BBQ was the host this past weekend. And what a wonderful place to have it. 4505's outdoor space is gorgeous. I've eaten here once and the food is very good.
I had a few servings of the brisket as it is traditionally served in Texas--on white bread with pickles and I love that the bbq sauce was just a garnish not a slathering on top of the bread. The brisket was melt in your mouth! The flavor is amazing. Mr. Franklin said he had the brisket started in and shipped from Texas. He was so friendly. He came out and greeted us all when we were in line waiting to get in. I can't wait to go to his Austin outpost when we visit my in-laws around Thanksgiving this year!
Rodney Scott, another famous pitmaster, was there to serve whole hog BBQ. He has restaurants in Charleston, SC and Birmingham, AL. His Atlanta restaurant is opening soon. His pulled pork was the best I've ever had too. So tasty! No need really to put any sauce on top. Even m husband was impressed. Mr. Scott was very friendly as well! When we go to Charleston, we definitely plan on having his BBQ!
We also had Whole Hog Tacos (also very good), Lamb Shwarma from Reem's California, Pork Belly from Liholiho Yacht Club (my least favorite as the pork belly was tough and the dish didn't really come together for me), and lots of delicious passed appetizers from 4505 (deviled eggs, BLT sliders, Frankaroni, Beef Tartare, and Ice Cream. There was so much food! I was so stuffed after half an hour of being there!
Everyone got 3 drink tickets (for beer and wine). Lots of great choices for beer (Almanac, Temescal and Golden State). I had a glass of Rosé and Sauvignon Blanc. I couldn't drink much coz I focused on the food. Topo Chico was the sparkling mineral water of choice and if you've never had it, it is the best Mineral water out there.
It was an amazing event, especially with the ticket price of $65 per person! I hope to visit Franklin BBQ in Texas in November and hav some more of that unforgettable brisket! read more
