This hidden gem is located in what looks like a back alley between between Russell Street and Swanstons Street off Little Bourke Road. It may be the same Hot Space listed elsewhere as being on Russell Street or may have just moved here. Waratah Place looks like this kind of place the hero gets knocked over the head and dragged into in a bad mystery movie; beware, if you pass by this alley, you will miss out on a great dining experience.
Hot Space is all about the red hot chili oil. My guide, who had been eating fire at every other restaurant in Chinatown, asked the hostess to only put in 1/2 of the allocated bag of oil for our Steam Boat lunch. We ordered beef, lamb, chicken, tofu, potato, ginger and tomato and a liter of the sour plumb drink (delicious). This was my first time having Steam Boat and it was an experience I will gladly repeat.
The service was good, atmosphere classy, staff attentive and the prices were very fair. read more
