We just learned that there is a Hot Stove Society weekly live radio show/podcast hosted by Seattle Celebrity Chef and Restauranter extraordinaire Tom Douglas. The show is broadcasted on KIRO radio and streamed on YouTube. You can also listen on a podcast. It is filmed in the industrial kitchen at the Hot Stove Society Cooking School in downtown Seattle. The best part for us is that we learned you can buy tickets to attend a taping of the show and it includes a freshly made breakfast. We immediately signed up and attended the one this past Tuesday. It was so much fun as we were treated to freshly made sticky buns, Shakshuka and Greek yogurt with granola. All of the food was delicious. The show being recorded was also fascinating to watch with lots of behind the scene activity capturing our attention. The guests on the show were informative and entertaining and some door prizes were given away to some audience members. After the taping, we got to take photos and talk with Tom, his staff and the guests. We really enjoyed ourselves and were well taken care of (and well fed!) by the staff. I recommend attending one of these shows for a great behind the scenes look and informative discussions about food and cooking from some local experts. read more

My wife and I had a great time here, so this review rating is a bit unbalanced. Being spectators to a live podcast production was really fun and educational. Tom Douglas and his daughter were great hosts and their guests were engaging as well. We enjoyed the food that was served as well. What bothered me to the point of dropping 2 stars was being offered a mimosa when we were seated, without being told it was not included in the price of our experience. I was not prepared for the steep charge for the drink when we were getting ready to leave at the end. Had I known in advance, I certainly would have politely declined the offer. It just really left a bad taste in my mouth which took away from what was otherwise a great experience. read more

What a fun experience! If your work team is looking for a re-connect or you are visiting Seattle with family and want to try something fun or if you're looking for an out-of-the-box date, this is for you! I went not having ANY expectations and had a BLAST! This is a group-cooking class where you will get your money's worth in the experience and eating good food!! I think it's fun to go in with an open mind and just enjoy the experience, as it's so much fun! Part of me says, "don't read any further, trust the process." But if you'd like to hear how my adventure went, keep reading. Parking wasn't too tricky, as I was told by our group leader to arrive on-time as we didn't want to miss the instructions. You go through the hotel to get to Hot Stove Society and they offered us 2 drink coupons & taste-testing to begin. I didn't know a soul, so I turned in both of my drink tickets immediately and ordered the cranberry (I think that's the berry?) mimosa. Delicious!! I was given directions to put on an apron and wash my hands, as we'd be cooking! I've never made homemade Chinese food before and I made bao buns (pronounced "bow") and it was super fun! The instructor made it look easy and told us in simplified-easy-to-understand, read 'direct with stories to associate and remember easily', and then it was our turn to go-ahead and follow her directions. We each made 3 and got to know each other, as our group of 40 students didn't know each other and we'd turn-and-talk to our partners. We had a coach at our assigned tables, so we had a fearless leader to make sure ours was okay. Next we were shuffled into another room where it was time to eat! We had a buffet-style of different flavors: salad, vegetables (broccoli and cauliflower fried I think?), pot stickers, and our bao we'd made! It was so yummy! I'd made friends with two others at my table group and we all agreed: the pot stickers were our favorites! I left feeling like it was a super fun experience and I'd love to take my family of older teens as it's a neat way to reconnect without awkwardness. It's memorable meal-making and coming-together of doing a project + sharing a meal that bonds people. Who doesn't love to eat? This is super fun and I can't wait to go again! Cool. On my first visit I opted for the advanced gnocchi class to learn how to make squash and beet varieties. We were treated to demonstrations and tastings of multiple pastas and then worked in groups to recreate the gnocchi ourselves. While mine did not turn out quite as good as Chef's, they were flavorful and with practice I'll get better. Cooking classes are a fun activity that you can do solo or with friends. I've taken two classes at Hot Stove Society, a cooking school owned by the famous Tom Douglas. One was a holiday cookie decorating class and the other was a soup making class. Their website is really nice and has photos and descriptions for the various classes. We actually had a gift certificate and it was super easy to use. I think most of their classes sell out, so just make sure you plan ahead a little. Hot Stove Society is located on the second floor of Hotel Andra. We showed up really early, so we just hung out in the hotel lobby, but there is also a waiting area on the second floor. Our class started with a knife skills demo by Chef Annie. She was wearing a microphone, so it was easy to hear her and there is an overhead camera so you can see a close up of what she's doing on the television monitors. She gave us some background info on the food we were going to cook and tips on how to prepare some of the vegetables. While she was talking some of the assistant teachers made us a small lunch: grilled cheese sandwich with brussels sprouts on the side. I know it sounds simple but it was delicious and seasoned well! After the demo finished, we broke into small groups of 4 to prepare one soup. Our team was assigned Chicken Noodle Soup (my favorite). I was there with my husband and we happened to be paired up with another random couple, but they were really cool and we had fun chatting and cooking with them. Our supervising chef (Sean) was also super nice and helpful. At the end each person gets to take home 1 quart (4 cups) of each soup (chicken noodle, potato leek, and beef minestrone). You also get the recipes as well. I know the classes can seem pricey, but they are a lot of fun and you get to take home great tasting food. It is definitely more fun that cooking at home because they have lots of people helping you and you also don't have to clean anything up at the end! read more

We came to make soup! It was pretty awesome- way better than the Sur La Table classes (my only comparison). The chef was awesome, super personable and fun, and encouraging of using recipes as a guide and doing whatever you want! We arrived late (oops). When we got there, the chef had started showing how to prep a soup. She demonstrated making a few types of soups (while we tasted them) for about an hour. After, we were released to make two different soups. It was great! We got to take home the soups that we made- and it comes out to like 8 portions! My only 'complaint' is that one of the girls who was helping was not the friendliest. My husband and I both made innocent mistakes (esp for people who are not chefs) and she kind of condescendingly came over to tell us what we were doing wrong. There was a bit too high of an expectation that people are coming in with base knowledge. Maybe she was just having a bad day, but for how much we paid, the experience should be all fun. read more

This place is so fun! Went here for a work event and had a total blast. The facilities were really nice, the teachers were awesome, and the food was delicious. It seems like they have a lot of different types of classes but for ours we made Asian dumplings in teams. Our instructors showed each group how to make a few different varieties of dumplings and then they set us loose to make the best ones we could. They had all the ingredients and tools we needed to make awesome food. We even got to come up with our own secret sauce and plate them. Then, the instructors blind judged all of them and we all sat down as a big group to eat our creations. I had never done anything like that before but it was so fun. The dumplings we made were so good and it was perfect for spending time with coworkers outside of the normal office. I'd love to come back here for a date night or weekend meal with friends. I've taken several culinary classes from Sur La Table, PCC, ASUW Experimental College, North Seattle CC, Cook's World, and Cucina Casalinga, but today was my first class via Hot Stove Society. I attended the second sold-out course, Potsticker Love with Hsiao-Ching Chou and her mother, Helen Chou. Hot Stove Society is located on the second floor of Hotel Andra in downtown Seattle and related to the Tom Douglas restaurant empire. The folks who oversaw the program really complement the guest chef instructors. Friendly and welcoming staff, class materials, and a well-accessorized environment, that allowed for a fun, hands-on, interactive class. Whenever we travel to other countries, we've started trying to take cooking classes. We find that discovering the food of a place, helps you understand it better...and we love to eat and want to recreate deliciousness any way we can! While we live in Washington, we'd never done a cooking class. Serendipitously, my parents saw an add for a Bao making class and got us tickets for Christmas. Fast forward to this past weekend where we had one of our favorite experiences in a long time! Plus we got a glass of wine or beer whilst cooking - The Montucky Cold Snack paired particularly nicely with the whole night! "Bow to the Bao" was a class focused on Bao making, from dough, to filling to the actual teaming. It takes place on the second floor of the Hotel Andra in downtown Seattle and was intensely entertaining and informative! Jamie Freedman was our chef and is great at her job! She's smart, funny, low key and made the whole class easy and fun. Classes range from 2 hours, to a whole weekend, and rumor has it, to an entire week as they used to run summer camps! Sounds like they may be restarting it in the near future. The Bao class was 2 hours long and showed us everything from mixing the dough all the way to fun folds! Great class and a fun way to learn something new and unique, in a great setting! We came, we made, we baked, we ate - a great night indeed! read more

My mom, aunt and I spent a weekend in Seattle recently and we stayed at The Hotel Andra so we were checking things out nearby to do. We stumbled upon The Hot Stove Society which is located in this really cool space in The Hotel Andra. Our first night there we actually got to see Tom Douglas giving a cooking class so that was pretty awesome. IT was packed and lots of activity was going on, it looked really exciting! We signed up for a lunch class for 25 dollars. There was no hands on cooking in this "class" but lots of instruction, entertainment and we had a great lunch. This particular class was on hot to make a steak sandwich, wedge salad and onion rings. Our instructor walked us through all the steps in a great kitchen setup with lots of TV screens so there was no chance you couldn't see. Lunch and a show for 25 bucks! I went here for a class to learn to make some cocktails. They do all kids of training and it is a very good facility. They are also really well-organized and the setup is great for training. The instructor was excellent and the guide they provide is really useful. They just mention the spirits for the most part in recipe, fortunately the instructor provides details on the exact spirits to get (although the names can be hard to understand). I was kind of expecting to actually mix the drinks--instead, they showed them being made and then served them to everyone. Instruction is more effective if you can also do it--but here, I think it is not too bad because the techniques were not too difficult. The drinks were really good--then I was also pleased was the food that accompanied it. It was a fun time. read more

I have yet to take a class here but after attending the opening gala, I am very excited. Tom's speech was very motivation in regards to why he opened up this Society. While the space seems very industrial, it is well equipped with KitchenAid and other major brands necessary to do Anything! My husband and I were in town for our anniversary and after a bunch of fancy dinners wanted to do something a little different and fun! We love cooking and are from Texas so we thought a cooking class would be fun to spice it up! The location of the class was great as it was downtown and easy to get to. The tacitly was super nice as well. We were learning to make farfalle pasta and our instructor was so nice! We really did enjoy our selves, but I just didn't think it was worth the $85 per person price based on what we received for dinner. Below are some bullet points of what I liked and disliked. The price is indicative that this is more of a glamorous cooking class, to watch the professionals. You get to do just a smidge of actual cooking, most everything is already prepared for you. If that's your thing, wearing an apron in the class is just for show. I would've liked even more interactivity. Can't deny that the food is amazing! I went to the Thrilla in Manila class for filipino desserts. The recipes were for modern, "lighter" versions, but still very delicious. My boyfriend and I attended the Vietnamese Home Cooking class with chef Thoa Nguyen. While she was plenty nice and probably a good cook, we did absolutely NO cooking during the class. We were really hoping for a more interactive experience where we would learn to make the some aspect of pho broth, build a summer roll, fry a crepe, or something...anything! We just sat there for two hours and watched her make it on the screen and then ate the delicious food that the employees had made for us. For a work event I booked a private class for 5 of us. We had Chef Bridget and Herschel as out main class contacts and they were both amazing. We arrived to Rose' and bites to start. We had amazing pita pieces with dips and apples with fondue goat cheese. This was amazing and kept us satisfied through the class. We did a tour of Rose' and learned to make jam. We were all pretty intimidated by the process but it was surprisingly fast, and more importantly FUN! We made peach, raspberry, and blackberry jams and they are so delicious. We then had a great lunch of Salmon, field greens, fresh corn, bread with jam, the best salad I have ever had and them desserts to die for of eclairs, coconut pie bites, Cherry chocolate chip cookies, so good. They have really fantastic instructors who can get even an un-salvageable cook like me doing all sorts of magic in the kitchen. For people looking for date ideas, I recommend this as an option. I love taking cooking classes here. The people are all so nice! You usually get a beverage with your class and it's very relaxed. The school was created by Tom Douglas to replace his annual culinary camp so that food lovers could get together and have fun learning together! Some instructors are more organized than others, but it's always a good time. Classes can be hands on or demo-only, depending on the theme. You get a coupon for Tom Douglas restaurants afterwards, as well! If there's a new cookbook out, they'll often have a session here to demonstrate some recipes, answer questions and autograph a copy of their book, which is included in the price of the class! When Tom has one of his classes, you can find out the inside story of the restaurant business, and how he makes his decisions on the food that's served. read more

Love, love, LOVED our knife skills class, our super knowledgeable and vivacious instructor, and the tasty meal that was offered. I had not originally imagined attending more than a class or two. Following our experience in November, I'm going to figure out how to attend them all. It was a lovely and super fun date with hubby, and I anticipate will be a fun and informative date with one of my young adult kids, perhaps a girlfriend or two. I also wasn't heartbroken to have the opportunity to scoot across the street to pick up a coconut cream pie (best in the history of the coconut-eating world) from the Dahlia Bakery. The 2-hour soup dumpling class I took with my daughter started off with the instructor telling us that she never cooks soup dumplings at home because they are too complicated and time consuming to make and it is much better to buy them from street vendors in China or from Din Tai Fung or the Dough Zone. If we made the dumplings at home within a day or two, she said, we might have "some" success, but if we waited three months, we'd surely fail. Why charge $90 per class if you don't expect the students to get good results? The dumpling dough, the filling and the gelatin, which becomes the "soup" part of the soup dumplings, was made before we arrived. Really? If two hours isn't long enough to make the recipe, the class time should have been extended. The instructor talked us through the recipe, sort of, though she did tell us to cross out a number of steps she deemed unnecessary. She demonstrated how to mix the gelatin into the pork mixture and how to roll the dough into circles and form dumplings. Our rolling pins, she told us, were cut from dowels at the local hardware store, so they were not the "exact size," you'd typically use. The hands-on part of the class involved cutting the dough into 8-gram pieces, rolling it into circles and crimping the edges to form the dumplings, but there were no scales to use, not . one . single . scale ! Din Tai Fung uses 5 grams of dough per dumpling, the instructor said, but we should aim for 8-10 grams, because we'd never be able to roll the dough as thin as Din Tai Fung. Even though we had enough dough to make dozens of dumplings, we were only given enough filling to form about 10 dumplings each. The dumplings were, as predicted, not worth the time it took to make them. After my daughter and I each made and our 10 dumplings with tough, thick skins that weren't anywhere near as good as the frozen variety at Trader Joe's, let alone a respectable dumpling house, the class was over. There was no sit-down meal with the other students or rice to eat with the dumplings. Cost - $180 for two. Total hands-on cooking time - less than 30 minutes. Attended the Peak Season Corn at Hot Stove Society with Chef Tom Douglas and it was amazing! Tom was funny, informative, and with assistance from his knowledgeable crew, it was a great evening. Five recipes were demonstrated, prepared, and served. an interactive evening, but this class was not hands on like others I've attended. Not an issue for me, as I knew that going in. I loved all of the dishes, but my two favorites were the Hanger Steak with Blueberry Corn Relish and Fresh Corn and Chanterelle Tamales. I will definitely make all five recipes at home! This is a great cooking school experience. The booking process was painful, as the web site does not process the cooking school gift cards. Several proactive emails on my part finally got that resolved. That is the only reason this is a four star review. Upon check in you are greeted with mimosas, coffee, pastries, and an amazing breakfast sandwich. I took the eclair and cream puff class. It was a combination of hands on and demos. We had a fun evening at Hot Stove. We attend a "demo" of BBQ cooking and a most entertaining meal. Hot Stove is located in the mezzanine of the Hotel Andra. The facility includes a large teaching kitchen with tables for about 30 students flanking the cooking area. Large video monitors showed the "Food Channel" overhead view of the workspace. Our class was taught by Bradley Layfield and Chris Schwarz assisted by two sous chefs. Using prepared trays of ingredients, they prepared a rub, four BBQ sauces, BBQ Pork Ribs, BBQ Pork Shoulder, baked beans, cole slaw, Brunswick Stew (delightful!), and caramel cake. As they cooked, an assistant delivered tastes (or a portion) of each concoction to each student. It was delicious. But more than that, it was a lot of fun. At the heart of it, these folks just like each other and enjoy making great food together. It made for a great evening. read more
