The RC doesn't rely on public or arts funding so has to hold it's own and I think deserves praise for what it does. The theatre pieces here might not be high brow - Slappers and Slapheads being a notable example! - but these shows are mainly penned by local writers and performed by well known faces from across the Northwest. The RC has also become synonomous with stand up comedy as a venue for big touring acts and a regular comedy night slot.

They are dedicated to producing the very best in comedy, drama and musicals. Since the summer of 2005 the building has been extensively refurbished - most particularly in the stalls which has been converted into cabaret style seating with tables for drinks and easy access for waiters and waitresses. The last time I went here, was to see a poetry performance on a school trip. I was impressed by the whole atmosphere and size of the arena as on first glance, it appears small from the outside but it has to be seen to be believed! Since then, it has dramatically changed and now it's even better.

There are various special event nights which do alot to encourage a crowd my favourite being Thursdays' Jager nation which has tapped into our nations new found obsession with the German tipple Jagermeister. While it may be true to say that Club Mood tries hard with these types of evenings for me it is still trying to detach itself from its' cheesy reputation. Perhaps I am being unfair by labelling Club Mood with this cheesy moniker but from the start of my time in Liverpool Moods' most successful evening has been mondays poptastic 90's night which is a novel idea but strains under the weight of cheesy powder puff music. My problem therefore is that Mood struggles to be taken seriously and I have begun to see it as a place which is quite outdated and missing out on markets which other concert square clubs have picked up on already. The drinks are about average for concert square and the promotions can make it a good value night out even if it does take an eternity to get served. Essentially if you are after a night out that doesn't take itself to seriously then Mood is your best bet but if you fancy a bit more punch in your evening then I'm afraid you should head elsewhere.

I'm not really sure if what you actually find inside lives up to what they promise but it certainly does not seem to be the case. The atmosphere seems far from friendly and the drinks are not of the highest calibre and all of this does not make for a great recipe. The staff aren't great here and they do not really go out of their way to cater for the needs of the customers. The prices are pretty reasonable here but everything else combined means that you are not likely to stay long here and enjoy the drinks so this does not really make much of a difference.

Instead, you can find poles (as in the things girls love to wrap their legs around and swing from, not Polish nationals) and cheap drinks. For example, a double spirit and mixer will cost no more than £2.99, and a bottle will be no more than £2. "Why is it only open 3 nights a week?" I hear you cry. Well, because there are plenty of other places during the week where you can get drinks at similar or better prices, if you really need to budget. Anyway, enough about the drink. The music is steadfastly 80s, although I'm sure I've heard a couple of tunes that were bordering on 70s or 90s, but according to the DJ its an 80s track and I'm always too drunk to remember what it was in the morning and check up. Not that I'm that pedantic, of course....ahem. Not forgetting the pole dancing poles, of course, which is a brilliant way of getting the punters to entertain themselves and each other. So many times I've heard people announcing they taught themselves to pole dance in Flares or Reflex...bless. I've got a feeling I'd ask for my money back if I went to see THAT particular show. Still, like Flares and the 70s, Reflex and the 80s is a safe bet, as it will always be busy after 11pm ish and you can have a cheap and cheesy night out. To make it worse I've actually been there twice, I've no idea why I put myself through it twice. The only good thing about the Reflex is that its cheap to get in, only £2 on a Saturday night. The door staff are friendly but its like they almost feel sorry for you having to go in there whilst they get to stand outside. The ground floor is very dark, which is probably just as well. There is a large bar at the back but this is usually a few people deep queueing for drinks. Upstairs is slightly better but it takes a huge climb up the equivalent of 2 floors of steep stairs to get there. The 1st floor is a bit brighter, but you wish it wasn't as it makes you realise exactly how horrible this place is. The dance floor is up a step which it seems is far too easy to fall up and down, and is an attempted 70's style dance floor with flashing lights on the floor, but instead of looking retro it looks cheap, garish and filthy. The bar staff are nice enough but the drinks are overpriced, which seems unfair as the only way to numb the pain is to have a good few of the overpriced drinks. The DJ is a middle aged balding man who probably played the rubbish 70's and 80's cheese the first time round, and has been doing the same set ever since. The Reflex seems about 80% full of hen nights and stag do's. I went on a hen do and spent the entire night being leered over by middle aged men in tacky fancy dress and sweaty shirts. This place is hell, pure and simple. It might be other peoples cup of tea but I'd rather eat my own head than go here again.

The decor is shabby the toilets are awful and it is a sweaty and crowded mess at times but this is all part of the appeal. If you are a student searching for a hedonistic night of heavy drinking during the week then you could do alot worse than visit Blue Angel. The entry fee is two pound and various selected drinks are only a pound each, the speciality however is fat frogs a lethal mix of alcohol which is bright green and is a ridiculously cheap £3.00 for two pints! The music in Blue Angel is pure cheese, any anthemic and cheesy classic you can think of will be played and the crowd will love it. Another interesting note is that Blue Angel is officially the easiest place to pull in the UK so singletons should get on down there. It is not tidy or clean and it certainly isnt classy but Blue Angel is too much fun to turn down!

The Raz is one of the most awful places in town and is likely to be filled with teachers and ex-students clinging to university days as it is with students who can dance ironically to the cheesey music because it's fun and stuff! It's obviously not my thing but if you like undrinkable beverages - everyone knows never to by a pint here - and The Foundations' Build Me Up Buttercup then this is the place for you. It's just a laugh though isn't it! The Raz is more complex than I make out, however, as it dispels the idea that it is only edgey, underground clubs that create vast swathes of sweat dripping from the ceiling and rivers of urine collecting near the toilets, this cute disco friendly place beats them all hands down.
