I was already familiar with the Perrache area as I had stayed in the vicinity before but this was south of the station which was a little sketchier, especially at night. Its location is good if you need to use the tram, metro, or train (depending where you are going/cmg from as not all trains go through Gare de Lyon - Perrache) and close to the Rhone promenade. Att night there are quite a few hookers around which is fine by me but that often comes with men who drive around in their cars looking for a good time and assume every woman walking around at night in the area is a prostitute, which can get pretty annoying after a while. The artsy Confluence area? just southwest of Perrache station is under development however, so things will probably change in the coming years. There are some restos, cafes, and a bakery nearby but further north of Perrache station is where the action is.
The room was TINY (had to walk sideways to get around), bed cover felt unclean (found a hair by the pillows) but I find that kind of common in France for single rooms, even in higher-end hotels. The lousy shower door created leakage during and after washing; toiletries were adequate.
Hotel staff were nice and spoke English well. The public areas were very clean and well-maintained. I did not check out the restaurant within but the menu sounded like some fine dining is to be had. There was one resto across the street which I didn't get to try but Lyon being the gastronomy capital tells me it can't be that bad!
Overall the Axotel Perrache was fine for my two-night stay and for the price I paid. If all you really need is a bed and easy access to other areas, you should be fine. read more
