If there are hotels in wine country, having a fridge would be an ideal addition to chill the days' purchased bottles of delicious wine But aside from those small suggestions, there was free wifi and the shower was fantastic Location was central to all our winery visits & the breakfast buffet was a lovely setup of cheeses, meats, breads and eggs and the most wonderful homemade jams & jellies We tried an elderflower jelly that was to die for. So flowery and sweet - we tried to sneak our way to purchasing a jar but didn't work out.....will just have to dream about this deliciousness and look forward to coming back

It simply was a new experience in good eating for us. The wines? Saale-Unstrut wine, from what once was a part of East Germany, still is too little known in almost all places. That's both fortunate and unfortunate. Fortunate because it's Germany's 4th smallest wine-growing area, so the supply is a bit limited. Unfortunate because the best Saale-Unstrut wines are markedly better than the best in a few of Germany's better known wine districts. In character, the Saale-Unstrut wines compare closest to the best wines in Franconia (Franken). Hotel Unstruttal offers a wide selection of many of the best Saale-Unstrut wines. One finds the high point in the dry Rieslings and Pinot Blancs (Weißburgunder on the label). However, our positive astonishment went to the 2014 Burgwerbener Herzogsberg Blauer Portugieser (Portugais bleu) from the Thürkind family in Gröst. One knows the Portugieser as a light, fruity red wine best suited for summer evenings in an Austrian Heurigen. Hotel Unstruttal and the Thürkinds surprised as with a very serious Portugieser of strong character and depth that can hold its own against most German and Austrians Pinot noirs (Spätburgunder). The accomodations? About as good and tasteful and comfortable as they can get in the European countryside. And then we have the Schlagobers (whipped cream atop an Austrian coffee) of the Hotel Unstruttal: The owners Jan and Ria Kannetzky. One would seek a friendlier and finer host and hostess combination in vain. Summary: We're already dreaming about returning to Freyburg and the Hotel Unstruttal next year. On a recent weekend getaway to Gera, we opted to go the route of a Ferienwohnung, as it would be…read moremyself and my fiance, plus his mother and her husband, and we wanted accommodations that included a kitchen, etc. I didn't have any say in where we stayed but it didn't matter much because this place was great, and very inexpensive (€20 a person, per night, plus €1 per night for sheets). Basically, it's a small apartment on the top two floors of 3-story home. There is a kitchen (with fridge/freezer, oven, stove), a bathroom (with bathtub and shower), a big living room area, and three bedrooms (2 downstairs and one open loft-style attic bedroom upstairs). There's also a nice backyard area where you can sit outside on warmer evenings - unfortunately, in our case, it rained most of the time we were there. The decor of the apartment was a bit uncertain, in that every room had its own theme sort of, but nothing completely consistent throughout. Still, it was simple and tasteful, and most of all, clean. The house is also in a quiet neighborhood, with a great view out over the Geraer Stadtwald. We attended a wedding in Untermhaus, and everything (the wedding, as well as downtown) was easy to access, either via a short drive or a 3-4 km walk along the Elster. My only complaint is that the website lists WLAN. Knowing that, I brought along my computer and deadline work to do while out of Berlin for four days. Unfortunately, when we arrived, the owner told us she hadn't gotten around to setting it up. That's all fine and good, but to that I simply say that you shouldn't say a place has certain amenities that it doesn't. Oh well.

We…read moreespecially appreciate the central location in Weimar, right on the Frauenplan and, as the name promises, within mere steps of the Goethehaus. It's an easy walk to all of the important traditional sights in classic Weimar. If you're into 3-star German hotels, as we are (super combination of price, very nice rooms, and efficient professional staff), you would do well to consider Hotel am Goethehaus. The only limitations of the hotel that might matter to some readers are 1) it does not have a lift, which would matter to persons averse to stairs (as many as 3 flights), and 2) the hotel lacks a restaurant. However, there are several very nice places within mere yards of the front door. Also, 3) hotel-owned parking, while available, is limited. This of course is a real consideration in a city - though a public underground garage is within easy walking distance. It is for these reasons alone that I'm giving this a 4-star yelp rating instead of 5-star -- I do so out of consideration for the opinion of other travelers for whom considerations regarding stairs and parking are of more importance than they are to me. To me the difference is inconsequential - this is a fine establishment. Before ending, I would like in particular to call attention to the wonderful help rendered by Herr Rauch in resolving a mix-up in our reservations -- which was our fault, not that of the hotel. Despite our needing to communicate in a mixture of his limited English and my less-than perfect German, and in spite of the fact that we arrived over the busy Pfingsten holiday, Herr Rauch managed to arrange accommodation for us in the hotel's Ferienwohnung and made other helpful arrangements for us, which saved that portion of our Germany vacation. Hats off (and 5 stars) to Herr Rauch! For all the reasons stated above, I would definitely stay in this same hotel if I'm ever again in Weimar.

The breakfast buffet is one of the neatest, most luxurious things you will experience. There are saunas in the basement as well as a few pieces of fitness equipment. Some staff members are kind of brusque but perhaps that's the German way?

Restaurants, bars and shopping literally around the corner. Check in was easy and friendly. Staff were very kind. Lounge is comfy. We used Bonvoy points so I can't comment on pricing. Car park on site for 22€ for overnight. Our room was 114. Upgraded due to being a Bonvoy Lifetime Titanium Elite member. Breakfast was included. Room was luxurious. Nice robes and linens. Extremely quiet. Garden view. Balcony off our room but it was cold and rainy so we couldn't use. Only negative is Hitler stayed here way back when. This is like staying at Mar-a-Lago now days!

The bathroom, albeit outdated, was very clean. Downstairs is a huge lobby with a piano. The restaurant is wonderful. I ate there twice and both meals surpassed my expectations and were reasonably priced for such an experience. Customer service was great. This would be the hotel of my choice when in Weimar.

Much better comfort in the big cities like Munchen or Berlin. Terrific meals, great value, big portions. The bar is loud and fun at night. Nobody here spoke English, so communication with the staff was fun. The owner is very very friendly, as are most (but not all) of the staff. I'd probably stay elsewhere if I had to return, but this was right down the street from where I wanted to visit.

This former home of educational/social theorist, Rudolph Steiner, gives the place a feeling of Weimar's early 20th century past as well as a focus on the natural comforts of pure food, clean surroundings, fresh flowers and polite interactions. I felt safe and cared for here and would recommend this charming place to travelers of all ages.
