It's seen it's best times, kinda dated - and we really had some awkward service issues here, multiple times. Last time, I wanted to check out the group (we were 20+ for our make-over-event Princess for one day). I was advised that they already charged the credit card on hold and had mailed the bill. Later, they charged me and said the bill was never paid. As we travel in three Mercedes vans (9 seaters), I had a bunch of people with me who all witnessed the situation. Still, the hotel behaves as if it was me who left the hotel without paying my bill. Not very nice, so make sure this does not happen to you when checking out.

There are also restaurants and bars right in the area. If you take the train east a bit to the KIT Durlacher stop, there is an awesome restaurant called Der Vogelbrau. They have amazing food there! My sister and I stayed in Room 402. It was tastefully decorated. The restroom had nice tiling and cute pictures on the wall. The bedroom wall had a giant city print. You can open the window and stick your head out to look at what's going on outside. The people at this hotel were extremely nice. They offered us glassware and plates for our room, so that we could enjoy the drinks and snacks we picked up from the market. They spoke English! Breakfast was the same every day that we were there. As even the driveway to the hotel was filled with cars, I had to remotely park on the street and take a five-minute walk (with all my luggage). Then, the attitude of the receptionist was less than acceptable. Unfortunately, they had problems with the company credit card I had given to secure (on-site the very same card just worked fine ;-) Then, we had to cancel a few rooms as we had a death of a team's family member. I was told I have to pay one room anyway. Then I learned that the rooms do not have a proper bathroom. The bathroom is somewhat open to the hotel room. As we have team members sharing, I would have never booked the rooms. Now, we had one "mixed couple" sharing a room, and I thought it would be particularly wrong to put both of them in such a room and asked for the room I had to pay for anyway. I was told that the hotel is sold out. I had reported the incident to Artist Travel Service - and the hotel manager responded I was lying (of course I have two witnesses). So the hotel is charging me for a room that they sold? Finally, my wife and I shared a room and had only one towel in the bathroom. When telling the receptionist, I was told it is house practice, and I was more than welcome to dress again and come down to reception and get a second one. I work for the worlds' #1 largest entertainment company and we book more than 300,000 rooms per year. I have given notice that we will put the hotel on a list that we will never put any of our artists or crew there. But my week's stay there was punctuated by restful sleep, delicious breakfasts, two absolutely spectacular dinners, lovely quiet surroundings, and very helpful and attentive staff. The old fashioned charm, successfully updated with modern comforts, made for a very enjoyable stay on the edge of the Black Forest. The higher elevation guaranteed snow almost every night - so waking up and driving through the forest roads and open fields covered with the fresh coating of white was such a nice way to start each day -- of course the fact that I did not need to shovel nor clear the snow off the car was a big factor in my positive attitude :-) Ask for a room at the end of a hallway - it will be more quiet than near a hallway door or the elevator. I changed my room - and the staff was quite accommodating. Very few people speak English, but the owner does, and goes out of his way to ensure his guests enjoy their stay. One negative is the poor wifi signal at the property.

Ettlingen is a small city with a charming old town and this modern hotel is just a few blocks away…read moreby foot. My stay was brief, only two nights, but I was impressed with both the staff and the breakfast buffet. The hotel room was functional, but not plush, with white walls and decor. A painting on one of the walls provided a welcome splash of color. There were also a few whimsical items to break up the utilitarian-style of the room, like a tree-branch style coat rack on one side of the closet and gummi bears in the shape of sheep on my pillow. The lobby also operates as a small bar, although the space is open to the upper floors so it has a bit of an echo. On one side there is a piano and an old-fashioned typewriter, that was a fun touch. Just next door there is a casual restaurant, Watt's Brasserie, and beer garden next to a nicer Italian restaurant. Plenty of options if you want to grab a quick beer or bite to eat without strolling into town. Wi-fi was included with the room and worked reasonably well. The TV stations are all German, except for CNN and CNBC. The nearest train station was in Karlsruhe that was about a 15 minute trip (~ €20) by taxi. There is a very small workout facility on the third floor and parking is available below the hotel. Important during those winter visits in the snow. There is a small park where you can take your dogs next door and playgrounds for kids within easy walking distance. While there isn't a ton to see and do in Ettlingen, if you are in the area, this was a fine and reasonably priced place to stay.
